Viticulture is the science, art and practice of growing grapevines, encompassing everything from site selection and planting through to canopy management, pest control, harvest and beyond. In the UK, viticulture is a young but rapidly maturing discipline, with growers combining traditional European knowledge with local innovation to produce quality fruit in a cool, damp climate.
The viticultural year
The viticultural year in the UK follows a familiar cycle. Winter, December to February, is the season of pruning. Spring, March to May, covers bud break, frost protection, and the first sprays against downy and powdery mildew. Summer, June to August, is the busiest time, with shoot thinning, leaf removal, canopy management, and the ever-present threat of disease. Autumn, September to November, is harvest, the culmination of the year's work.
Each step is critical, and the order matters. Pruning sets the vine's potential crop. Frost protection preserves the buds. Canopy management balances sun and air. Harvest captures the fruit at its peak. The result of a good year is a clean crop of ripe, healthy grapes. The result of a bad year is a smaller crop of lower quality.
UK viticulture in numbers
UK viticulture has grown from a few hundred hectares in the 1990s to over 4,000 hectares in 2025, with the South East accounting for the majority, followed by East Anglia, the South West, Wales and the rest of England. The number of commercial vineyards is now well over 900, with the number of wineries approaching 250.
The economic contribution of UK viticulture is significant. Wine production contributes around 600 million pounds a year to the UK economy, with vineyard tourism, hospitality and events adding several hundred million more. The industry employs around 10,000 people directly, plus many more in the wider supply chain.
Pest and disease management
Disease pressure is the single biggest challenge in UK viticulture. Downy mildew, powdery mildew and botrytis (in its grey rot form) are the three constant threats, with downy and powdery mildew requiring 8 to 14 sprays per season in a typical year. Insect pests include the fruit fly Drosophila suzukii, the mealybug and various species of leafhopper. Mammals include deer, rabbits, pigeons and pheasants.
The industry is moving towards more sustainable pest and disease management. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is increasingly common, with monitoring, biological controls and softer chemistry used before conventional sprays. Organic and biodynamic viticulture is growing, particularly on the most committed estates. The trend is towards a more environmentally friendly, more resilient approach.
Education and research
Plumpton College in East Sussex is the centre of UK viticulture education, with the country's only undergraduate degree in viticulture and oenology, plus a range of short courses, apprenticeships and a research vineyard. NIAB at East Malling does significant work on variety and rootstock trials. The UK Wine Research Group at the University of Lincoln, the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board and the Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute in Northern Ireland all contribute to the science base.
Private sector research is also growing, with several producers running their own trial plots and collaborating with academic institutions. The pace of innovation is fast, and the next decade is likely to see significant advances in clonal selection, integrated pest management and climate-adapted viticulture.
