Breezy Ridge Vineyard: Family-Run English Sparkling Wines in the Heart of North Dorset
Discover Breezy Ridge Vineyard
Tucked into the rolling hills of North Dorset near the historic town of Shaftesbury, Breezy Ridge Vineyard is a five-acre, family-run English vineyard with a difference. It produces a small but distinctive range of traditional-method English sparkling wines and natural Pet Nat / Col Fondo from German grape varieties - a deliberate departure from the more common French varieties favoured by many English estates. Alongside the vines sits The Ridge, a contemporary food and wine bar serving tapas, grazing boards and cocktails, plus a flexible private function room for everything from hen parties to corporate dining.
The combination of low-intervention vineyard management, a maker who learned his craft in New Zealand, and a small but energetic family team has shaped Breezy Ridge into one of Dorset's most exciting boutique wine destinations. Visitors can taste wines at the cellar door, book an afternoon tea or group tapas feast, or hire the venue for a private celebration.
The Family Behind the Vines
Breezy Ridge is, at heart, a family story. The vineyard is the work of husband and wife Joe and Becky, who married in 2014 and somehow juggle the running of a vineyard and food business alongside raising three young children. The couple quote Andre Simon approvingly: "Wine makes every meal an occasion, every table more elegant, every day more civilized."
Their first son Dexter was born in 2016 alongside the inaugural harvest, and twins Harry and Francesca followed in 2020. As Becky writes, the vineyard is "a real family affair" - the children ride tractors, roll in the mud, picnic among the vines and watch deer, pheasants and house martins patrol the rows. That atmosphere of informality, curiosity and fun is what Joe and Becky hope to bottle into the Breezy Ridge experience.
A Vineyard Planted on a Whim
The story begins in May 2014. The couple had just returned from their honeymoon to find a 5-acre vineyard had been planted in the same West Melbury field where their marquee wedding had been held. 3,500 vines went into the ground that spring. Knowing nothing about viticulture at the time, they threw themselves in at the deep end - pruning, training, harvesting and learning on the job while still working full-time. Friends and family dismissed it as "a glamorous hobby"; the reality was blood, sweat and tears in all weathers throughout the year.
The gamble paid off. The first harvest in 2016 yielded enough fruit to make the inaugural wines, and over the following years Joe and Becky worked closely with respected consultants to refine their approach and grow production. The business formally launched in 2021 with the support of European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development funding for project "Breezy Ridge Launch 2021", which helped develop the brand, build the wine tasting and retail space, and grow production capacity.
The Winemaker: Daniel Ham of Offbeat Wines
The grapes are grown on site at Breezy Ridge, then transported to Daniel Ham of Offbeat Wines for production. Daniel first fell for wine while working as a marine biologist in New Zealand, retrained with a Viticulture and Oenology degree at Plumpton College, and has spent the past decade developing his winemaking style across the UK and abroad - including a stint as head winemaker at Langham Wine Estate.
He founded Offbeat Wines in 2018 to craft "honest, approachable wines using sensitive intervention", and produces wines for a small group of growers who share that outlook - Breezy Ridge among them. Once harvested in early autumn, the fruit is immediately pressed before moving to tank and barrel, giving Daniel the versatility to experiment with both traditional and ancestrale winemaking methods.
Grape Varieties: Standing Out from the Crowd
Where many English vineyards lean on the classic Champagne trio of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, Breezy Ridge has chosen to plant four German grape varieties - a choice that genuinely sets them apart:
- Seyval Blanc - a hardy white variety that performs reliably in the English climate and forms the backbone of the Classic Cuvée blends.
- Solaris - an early-ripening white bred for cool, marginal climates, prized for its tropical fruit character.
- Muscaris - a fragrant, muscat-leaning white that adds aromatic lift and floral perfume.
- Cabernet Cortis - a red German hybrid that brings colour and structure to the rosé cuvée.
The site sits on an elevated ridge that catches an all-year-round westerly breeze - a natural disease defence that reduces the need for chemical intervention and inspired the vineyard's name. The team follows low-intervention principles and works on organic principles both in the vineyard and through to winemaking.
The Wines: From Classic Cuvée to Natural Pet Nat
To date, the team has produced several vintages of traditional-method English sparkling wines, a rosé Classic Cuvée, and a natural Pet Nat alongside its bottle-conditioned sibling, the Col Fondo. The current cellar-door and online range includes:
Classic Cuvée
The flagship sparkling wine, made by the Méthode Traditionelle with secondary fermentation in bottle. The earlier 2016 vintage is a blend of 81% Seyval Blanc and 19% Solaris at 12% ABV - zestful, with white flower, stone fruit and apple pastry aromas and a palate of pear frangipane, peaches and pink grapefruit rind lifted by zesty acidity.
The 2017 vintage (74% Seyval Blanc, 19% Muscaris, 7% Solaris, 12% ABV) is gold in colour with honeysuckle, honey and mild floral notes on the nose and elderflower and marmalade on the palate. The 2018 Classic Cuvée is available at £30.00.
Barking Dog Pet Nat
A fun, must-try Méthode Ancestrale sparkling made from Solaris and Muscaris, disgorged to leave clean and tropical flavours on the palate. Around 11.5% ABV, it is the natural, lower-intervention side of the Breezy Ridge portfolio.
Jimmy's Horn Col Fondo
The bottle-conditioned descendant of the Pet Nat project. A field blend of Solaris, Muscaris and Seyval Blanc, second-fermented in bottle and unfiltered, producing clean, tropical, elderflower-scented flavours at 11.5% ABV. The 2020 and 2021 vintages are both currently available at £24.00 per bottle.
Rosé Cuvée
Made in the Méthode Traditionelle, the pink Rosé Cuvée 2019 is available at £35.00 per bottle via the online shop or cellar door.
The Ridge: Food & Wine Bar
The vineyard's on-site Food & Wine Bar, known as The Ridge, sits in the heart of the vineyard and brings a slice of continental café culture to Dorset. Doors open Friday from 5pm for tapas, signature grazing boards, cocktails and live music, and on Saturday from 11:30am for barista coffee and cake, followed by the Bar & Boards lunch menu. As the seasons change, the wood burner is lit for cosy autumn vibes.
The aim, the team writes, is to "bring sunshine, fabulous wine and delicious food to Dorset, similar to what you'd expect on the continent." Following a period of redevelopment, The Ridge will reopen from April 2026 with a calendar of pop-up events (tastings, themed evenings, supper clubs, collaborations, live lounges and club nights) replacing the standard weekly hours.
Outside of pop-up events, the venue is available for function hire Monday through Thursday and Sunday, and is ideal for intimate occasions in the private dining room (christenings, private dining, shoot parties and hen dos) or larger celebrations across the main venue.

Private Functions & Celebrations
The Ridge has been deliberately designed as a contemporary, unique venue for celebrations of every shape and size. The private function room suits intimate occasions such as christenings, private dining, shoot parties and hen dos, while the main venue is perfectly suited to larger parties and celebrations. Examples of function hire flagged by the team include baby showers, hen parties and corporate grazings.
Bespoke corporate and team events can be built around the vineyard's tasting flights, tapas and afternoon tea packages, and the team welcomes enquiries from companies looking for something more original than the usual off-site.

Funding & Recognition
Breezy Ridge's launch and growth have been supported by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development through project "Breezy Ridge Launch 2021". The funding was awarded to enhance farm diversification, employment and tourism in the local area, and was granted specifically to develop the brand, build the wine tasting and retail space and grow production capacity. It's a fitting acknowledgement of the role small, family-run vineyards increasingly play in rural economies across the south of England.
Why Breezy Ridge Is Worth a Detour
What makes Breezy Ridge stand out among English vineyards isn't just the warm family welcome or the spectacular North Dorset setting - though both help. It's the willingness to plant German varieties that other producers have overlooked, the commitment to low-intervention, organic-principles winemaking, and the range of styles from traditional-method sparkling through to unfussy ancestrale Pet Nat and Col Fondo. Pair that with a food and wine programme that genuinely leans Mediterranean, a private function room that can host anything from a christening to a hen do, and tasting flights starting at £15 per person, and you have one of the most distinctive small vineyards in Dorset.
Whether you're a sparkling wine enthusiast chasing something off the beaten track, planning a celebration, or simply looking for a Saturday morning coffee and cake among the vines, Breezy Ridge is a compelling stop on any English wine country itinerary.
