Hundred Hills Vineyard - Award-Winning English Sparkling Wine from the Oxfordshire Chilterns

Nestled in a steep, chalky fold of the Chiltern Hills between Oxford and Henley-on-Thames, Hundred Hills Vineyard has, in little more than a decade, established itself as one of the most exciting producers of vintage English sparkling wine in the country. The estate produces exclusively vintage wines from a single 17-hectare site in the Stonor Valley, with grapes that hang on the vine for at least 100 days before harvest and a winemaking philosophy that prizes purity over artifice. The result is a small, highly regarded range of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay sparkling wines served in over forty Michelin-starred restaurants and at some of the most prestigious hotels and clubs in the United Kingdom.

From its state-of-the-art Chiltern Barn winery, set down in the floor of the valley and surrounded by the vines that feed it, Hundred Hills crafts wines for table, for gifting and for the cellars of discerning collectors. Visitors and Friends are welcomed through private tours, members' events and bespoke private and corporate experiences.

A Single-Estate Vineyard in the Stonor Valley

Hundred Hills sits between Oxford and Henley-on-Thames, set on both sides of the beautiful Stonor Valley that runs down from the Chiltern Ridge to the River Thames at Henley. The estate is less than an hour from London, yet feels a world away, surrounded by ancient woodland and rolling chalk downland. The chalk valley terroir is the cornerstone of the Hundred Hills identity. Steep chalk slopes, warmed gently through the English summer, and thin, hungry soils force every vine to struggle a little for survival and, in doing so, to produce the most enticing grapes it can.

The vineyard is carefully segmented into ten parcels, each with its own aspect, slope and soil profile. These parcels are planted with the low-yielding, high-quality Burgundy and Champagne clones that the team identified as best suited to the climate of southern England in the twenty-first century. Chardonnay 95 is planted on the thin soils and steep slopes of the dramatic Amphitheatre parcel, while Pinot Noir 115 occupies the gentler east-facing slopes where a long growing and ripening season allows the variety to express its full potential. The estate is planted entirely to these two varieties, a deliberate choice that mirrors the great traditional houses of Champagne and underpins the precision of every Hundred Hills wine.

How to find the winery

Coming out along the Fairmile from Henley, follow signs to Stonor; after passing The Crown pub on your right the winery is the second turning on your left. From Oxford, leave the M40 at Junction 6 and follow the road through Watlington, then left towards Wallingford. Turn left at the top of the hill towards Stonor and down through the valley until you see the winery. The Hundred Hills Philosophy

"Great wines are made in vineyards, not in wineries." That sentence, central to the Hundred Hills philosophy, sets the tone for everything the estate does. The team believes that the cool English climate is a gift: it allows grapes to ripen slowly, developing the hundreds of delicate aromas and flavours that ultimately deliver the fine wines we love. The winemaking that follows is intentionally minimalist, aiming to reflect a sense of time and place in the way that the very best Burgundies seek to do.

From the moment the presses flow with fresh musts, the sole objective is to protect the delicate flavours and aromas of the wines. Only the finest grapes from Hundred Hills' own vineyard are used, and quality is tightly controlled at every stage, from planting vines to popping corks. The result is a range of wines that varies year by year, true to each season, with the winemaker always allowing as pure a vintage expression of the vineyard as possible.

Raymond Blanc OBE has been a notable champion of the estate, calling it "magnificent to see such beautiful and sustainably produced fine wines emerging from Hundred Hills, the wines Stephen and Fiona are creating are amongst the very finest that I have tasted. A new chapter in wine is being written only a few miles away from Le Manoir aux Quat'Saisons."

The Winery Itself - The Award-Winning Chiltern Barn

One of the things that sets Hundred Hills apart is that the winery sits in the middle of the vineyard; the grapes are pressed in the very valley they grew in. The award-winning Chiltern Barn houses state-of-the-art winemaking facilities, deep cellars, two beautiful tasting rooms and a wine library housing fine wines from around the world. Natural night-cooling and sophisticated temperature control systems for each wooden cask and steel tank keep the wines stable with minimal energy use.

Each of the vineyard parcels can be vinified separately before being tasted, combined or kept apart as desired, a level of precision that allows the winemaker to create the most exciting and distinctive wines of each season. The tasting rooms above the winery can host up to sixteen guests for dinner, and below them a naturally cooled cellar houses the long-ageing magnums that form the heart of the library collection. The winery is also the centre for the Members' events that run throughout the year.

The Wines of Hundred Hills

Hundred Hills produces exclusively vintage, single-estate sparkling wines from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. There are no non-vintage blends; each release is a snapshot of a single year and a single place. The current range is organised into Limited Releases, Current Releases, Memberships, Tasting Sets, Magnums and the Gifting Cupboard.

Limited Releases - The Illustration Series

These are Hundred Hills' wines of the year, chosen to show what each vintage was really all about. Each is a "pure expression of its vintage" and is released only when conditions and quality permit.

• First Edition, 2018 - A 70/30 blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from the steep Amphitheatre Chardonnay parcel. Honeydew, apricot and vanilla pastry. Aged over 48 months on lees. £295 for six bottles.
• Blanc de Blancs "Library Release" 2018 - 100% Chardonnay from the Hill Top vineyard, fermented and aged in traditional oak cask for six months and kept on lees for a full six years. Toasted hazelnut, preserved lemon and beeswax. £199 for three bottles.
• Rosé de Blancs, 2020 - A brighter, more mineral style of rosé built around 90% Chardonnay with 10% Pinot Noir. Born out of the roasting hot 2020 vintage. Raspberries, Meyer lemon and custard. £295 for six bottles.
• Hillside No.3, 2019 - The second release in The Illustration Series. 65/35 Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from a rare third-pass pick across the entire Hillside parcel, with 120 days on the vine. Golden pineapple, baked apple and toasted brioche. £349 for six bottles. Described by Jancis Robinson as "much more recognisably champagne-like than the Preambles".
• Zero Dosage, 2018 - 75/25 Pinot Noir and Chardonnay with no addition of dosage sugars, partial malolactic fermentation and 40 months on lees. Ripe lemon, greengage and salinity. £175 for three bottles.

• Signature Rosé, 2019 - A bright, fresh assemblage rosé of 65% Pinot Noir and 35% Chardonnay. Wild strawberries, raspberries and hibiscus. Served by the glass at Alain Ducasse at The Dorchester. £249 for six bottles.
• Blanc de Blancs, 2020 - 100% Chardonnay from the Hill Top parcel, fermented in Rousseau oak cask with no malolactic fermentation, aged 43 months on lees. Yuzu, brioche and lemon oil. £349 for six bottles.
• Blanc de Noirs, 2021 - 100% Pinot Noir, the first single-parcel Blanc de Noirs from the Hillside. Roast plum, raspberries and fresh fig. £199 for three bottles.
• Preamble No.2 2021 - A 75/25 Pinot Noir and Chardonnay blend from the Winery Bank parcels. Yellow apple, citrus blossom and ripe pear. Featured on the wine lists of more than forty Michelin-starred restaurants. £249 for six bottles.

• Hillside No.3, 2019 Gift Magnum - Baked apple, pineapple and apricot. £125 per bottle.
• Blanc de Noirs, 2019 Gift Magnum - The very first Blanc de Noirs produced at Hundred Hills. Blood orange, peach skin and red apple. Rated by Jancis Robinson as one of the very finest English wines she has tasted. £175 per bottle.

Sustainability - A Design Principle, Not a Marketing Tag

Sustainability has defined what Hundred Hills does since the vineyards and winery were first established. The estate has never used herbicides, instead relying on cover crops to sustain soil nutrients, hand-hoeing and straw mulches to minimise mechanical weed control, and natural treatments such as orange oil and organic sprays for disease. Soil compaction is kept to an absolute minimum, while soil surveys and earthworm counts are carried out every season to monitor soil health.

Since planting in 2014 there has been no trunk disease, mildew or botrytis at harvest, a remarkable track record that the team attributes to careful canopy management and the Simonit and Sirch sustainable pruning system. In 2020, Hundred Hills became the first vineyard in England to actively use low-orbit satellite data collection to monitor soil, nutrients and vine health, in a VineSignal project run with Deep Planet Artificial Intelligence and supported by the EU Horizon Project.

The winery itself was designed for low impact. Celotex cavity wall insulation is used throughout the building; low-level natural ventilation and night cooling maintain an ambient internal temperature of around 14°C; grape pomace during harvest is spread directly onto local farmers' fields; and a 2019 wine storage barn built for over 200,000 bottles of sparkling wine on lees uses very little energy throughout the year. With no need for fining, all the wines are vegan, and the estate uses light, eco-design bottles and fully recyclable packaging to keep its carbon footprint to a minimum, with net-zero as a clear near-term goal.

In 2020 Hundred Hills received WineGB's trademarks for both Sustainable Vineyard and Winery of Great Britain, and in 2025 was awarded WineGB's prestigious Gold Award.

Awards and Recognition

2026 was an exceptional year of international recognition for Hundred Hills. At the Decanter World Wine Awards 2026, Hillside No.3 2019 received a rare Gold Medal, placing both Oxfordshire and Hundred Hills firmly on the international wine map. At the International Wine Challenge 2026, the Blanc de Blancs Library Release 2018 won both the Trophy and a Gold Medal, with Hillside No.3 2019 also taking Gold. Across the Atlantic, the TEXSOM Awards awarded a Judges' Selection Medal to the Blanc de Blancs Library Release 2018 and Gold Medals to the Blanc de Blancs No.2 2018, Blanc de Noirs 2021, First Edition 2018 and Preamble No.2 2019.

Earlier recognition includes a feature in Jancis Robinson's tasting notes, multiple listings in 67 Pall Mall, and the placement of the Blanc de Blancs No.2 2018 on the wine list at the French Laundry, believed to be the first English sparkling wine to achieve that distinction.

Visiting Hundred Hills

Visits to Hundred Hills are reserved for Friends and their guests, and the winery hosts only a limited number of bespoke private and corporate events each year. Three ways to experience the estate are on offer.

Friends' private tours and tastings

As a Friend, the Magnum Cellar is always open by appointment for complimentary tastings, Monday to Friday. Private tours and tastings for up to twenty guests can be organised for special occasions, with the option to arrange a bespoke wine-paired canapé selection using local and seasonal produce. Tours are available Monday to Friday between 9:00am and 4:00pm. Pricing for these bespoke visits is available on application.

Members' events

Friends enjoy a rich calendar of events throughout the year, with at least one event each month. These include drinks among the Amphitheatre vines, comparative tastings of the same wine in magnum and standard bottles, and intimate masterclasses with the winemaker. A schedule of upcoming events is included with each case delivery. For all events guests are welcome to come along.

Private and corporate events at the winery

Throughout the year Hundred Hills hosts a limited number of bespoke events for private and corporate clients. Two signature formats are on offer:

• Private Dining Experiences - For 12 to 20 guests, beginning with a guided tour of the estate's winery and vineyards, followed by a curated wine tasting of limited-edition wines. Guests are seated in the winery tasting room overlooking the vineyards, where private chefs prepare a wine-paired lunch using locally sourced, seasonal ingredients. The experience concludes with exclusive access to the underground magnum cellars for an intimate tasting of some of the estate's rarest wines.
• Private Wine Tasting & Canapé Receptions - A three-hour gastronomic experience for 20 to 40 guests. Three of the latest release wines are served with carefully paired canapés created by the private chefs, with some wines being served in rare magnums. An optional canapé and sparkling-wine pairing masterclass can be added.

Becoming a Friend of Hundred Hills

The Friends of Hundred Hills wine club is the heart of how the estate builds relationships with its drinkers. Membership costs £600 per annum and includes the following benefits:

• Two six-bottle cases of Hundred Hills wines per year. Each delivery contains wines with a value of approximately £300, carefully selected by the winemaker. Cases can be tailored to your preferences, whether that means swapping in an old favourite, exploring a new release, or moving up to magnums.
• Visit with guests. The Magnum Cellar is always open to Friends by appointment for complimentary tastings, Monday to Friday. Private tours and tastings for up to twenty guests are also available exclusively to Friends.
• Harvest and events. Year-round invitations to exclusive winery events, tastings and release parties, plus a complimentary invitation to the annual harvest walk-around, a rare opportunity to see harvest in action and taste fresh musts as they flow.
• Cellar-door prices and free delivery. Complimentary membership of the Gifting Cupboard, exclusive cellar-door prices on all wines and gifts, and free delivery anywhere in the UK.
• Access to rare limited-edition wines. The last bottles of the most sought-after releases are reserved for Friends.

Cellar Door and Collection

Hundred Hills offers cellar-door discounts on all orders collected from the winery. Collections are available Monday to Friday, 10am to 4pm. Orders should be placed through the online shop prior to collection so the team can have them ready. Standard delivery within the UK is free, with selected-day delivery to England and Wales arriving between 8am and 6pm, and orders to Scotland, Northern Ireland and the EU taking at least five working days from order. Hundred Hills on the International Stage

Hundred Hills wines have been served at some of the most celebrated addresses in the world, and the list continues to grow. Recent highlights include a launch partnership at Hermès' new Maison on New Bond Street, where Preamble No.2 2021 is served to guests; an evening at the British Ambassador's residence in Paris, the historic home of Napoleon's sister; a Bocuse d'Or celebration dinner at Fortnum & Mason with Team UK chefs; tastings with Tokyo's L'Osier and Milan's Cuzziol GrandiVini; and the launch of the inaugural edition of Wyn Wine, a collaborative art-and-sparkling project featuring the First Edition 2018 wrapped in a sculptural work by artist Sonya Derviz.
