Nyetimber: The Pioneer of World-Class English Sparkling Wine from West Sussex

Nestled in the rural heart of West Sussex, where the chalk and greensand soils of the South Downs meet gentle south-facing slopes, Nyetimber has spent nearly four decades rewriting what the world thought English wine could be. Founded in 1988 on an estate first recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086, Nyetimber is widely regarded as the pioneer of English sparkling wine and remains one of the most decorated producers outside the Champagne region.

Owner and Chief Executive Eric Heerema, who acquired the estate in 2006, captures the brand's long-term thinking in a single line: "I don't think in years but in generations." Under his custodianship, and guided by Head Winemaker Cherie Spriggs and Winemaker Brad Greatrix, Nyetimber has become a byword for elegance, precision and quiet ambition, releasing some of the most awarded bottles in the English fine wine category.

The History of Nyetimber

The Nyetimber estate counts three major milestones in its recorded history. The earliest saw the peaceful valley of Nitimbreha - believed to mean "a newly timbered house" or "a small timber plantation" - named in the Domesday Book in 1086, almost a thousand years ago. The second milestone came almost 902 years later, in 1988, when Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier - the holy trinity of sparkling wine grapes - were planted for the first time in the lee of the South Downs. Nyetimber was the first English producer to grow these varieties exclusively for the production of sparkling wine.

The third, and most transformative, milestone came in 2006 when Eric Heerema became the owner and custodian of Nyetimber, recognising that the estate's soils and microclimate had yet to realise their full potential. He recruited Cherie Spriggs and Brad Greatrix, who had first fallen in love with Nyetimber after tasting a bottle gifted by Cherie's parents. Their arrival in 2007 set the stage for a string of international triumphs, including Cherie Spriggs becoming the first person outside the Champagne region - and the first woman ever - to win the prestigious "Sparkling Winemaker of the Year" trophy at the International Wine Challenge in 2018.

The Estate and Terroir

Nyetimber's vineyards are spread across several separate sites in West Sussex, Hampshire and Kent, where greensand and chalk soils - geologically continuous with the chalk of the Champagne region across the Channel - give the vines an ideal foundation. The gentle south-facing slopes allow maximum exposure to the English sunshine, while the cool maritime climate slows ripening, preserving the bright natural acidity that is the backbone of fine traditional-method sparkling wine.

Around 30% of the total estate is set aside as natural, non-productive hedgerows, windbreaks, woods, gardens, ponds and wildflower meadows, providing wildlife corridors and supporting pollinators. Sheep from a local farm graze between the rows in winter, and drones are used to map vine health block-by-block, row-by-row, so that any intervention is targeted and minimal. The pressing centre at West Chiltington is reached via the estate's own tracks to keep road mileage and village traffic down, and even generates part of its own power through photovoltaic cells.

The Wines

Nyetimber makes all of its wines according to the traditional method, ageing them for extended periods in cellar (always more than three years, often considerably longer) and allowing generous post-disgorgement time before release. The current range is a study in restraint, terroir and balance, with seven core cuvées built from the classic Champagne varieties.

Classic Cuvee Multi-Vintage

The signature wine of Nyetimber is a multi-vintage blend of approximately 55 - 65% Chardonnay, 30 - 40% Pinot Noir and 5 - 15% Pinot Meunier, sourced from across all Nyetimber vineyards. With its pale-golden hue, fine bubbles and more than three years on lees, it shows distinctive toasty and spicy aromas, a palate of honey, almond, pastry and baked apple, and a long, elegant finish. The recommended pairings are smoked salmon, oysters, scallops, asparagus and sushi. Priced at £42 per bottle, it is consistently described as one of the best English sparkling wines.

Rosé Multi-Vintage

A sunset-pink blend of 45 - 75% Chardonnay and 25 - 55% Pinot Noir, with under 5% Pinot Meunier, the Nyetimber Rosé offers aromas of British summer fruits and shortbread, with redcurrant, raspberry and cherry flavours wrapped in a creamy, round texture. It pairs beautifully with salmon fillets, brown crab, veal carpaccio and guinea fowl, and retails at £47 per bottle.

Cuvee Chérie Multi-Vintage

A 100% Chardonnay demi-sec and the first wine of its kind in England, Cuvee Chérie shows light golden hues with a silver undertone and aromas of pure lemon, mineral, honey and a hint of tangerine. With 38 g/L residual sugar, it is the most obviously off-dry style in the range, perfect with strawberries and cream, fruit tarts, afternoon tea, meringues, Asian cuisines (Japanese, Chinese, Thai) and foie gras. Price: £42 per bottle.

Blanc de Blancs 2017

The first style ever produced at Nyetimber, the Blanc de Blancs is a 100% Chardonnay single-vintage wine with extended lees ageing, showing aromas of lemon curd, greengage, clotted cream and shortcrust pastry. The follow-up to the celebrated Blanc de Blancs 2016 Magnum - which made history in 2025 as the first non-Champagne to win the International Wine Challenge Champion Sparkling Wine trophy - the 2017 upholds a legacy of precision craftsmanship. Pairs beautifully with white crab, Dover sole and mussels. Price: £58 per bottle.

Tillington Single Vineyard 2016

Predominantly Pinot Noir (73%) with 27% Chardonnay, grown on greensand soils in West Sussex, the Tillington is a rare and refined single-vineyard expression with intense aromas of raspberry, red apple skin and rose petal, and a textured palate revealing orange zest, raspberry, apricot and marzipan. The recommended pairings are monkfish and John Dory. Price: £110 per bottle.

1086 by Nyetimber

The pinnacle of Nyetimber's winemaking and England's first prestige cuvée, 1086 is produced only in exceptional vintages from the finest hand-selected parcels. The 2013 vintage is a blend of 51% Chardonnay, 40% Pinot Noir and 9% Pinot Meunier, while the 2014 is also widely available, both showing richness, elegance and poise. The name 1086 commemorates the year the Nyetimber estate was first recorded in the Domesday Book. Price: from £150 per bottle.

1086 by Nyetimber Rosé

The pinnacle of rosé winemaking at Nyetimber, the 1086 Rosé is silky and elegant with a pure crystalline backbone. The 2013 vintage - 36% Chardonnay and 64% Pinot Noir - shows wild strawberry, red apple and floral aromas, with chantilly cream and hints of freshly baked brioche. The 2016 vintage is also available, and pairs beautifully with duck breast, veal carpaccio, steak tartare, lobster bisque and grilled octopus. Price: from £175 per bottle.

Magnums and Jeroboams

Larger formats are a Nyetimber speciality. A magnum (1.5L) is widely regarded as the ideal bottle for ageing and maturing, while a jeroboam (3L) - the equivalent of four standard bottles - is the ultimate party centrepiece. Highlights from the large format collection include:

  • Classic Cuvee Multi-Vintage Magnum - £85
  • Classic Cuvee Vintage 2010 Magnum - £95
  • Blanc de Blancs 2017 Magnum - £130
  • Classic Cuvee Magnums (3 x 1.5L) - £239
  • 1086 by Nyetimber 2013 Magnum - £325
  • 1086 by Nyetimber Rosé 2013 Magnum - £375
  • Classic Cuvee Multi-Vintage Jeroboam - £223
  • 1086 by Nyetimber 2013 Jeroboam - £725

Food Pairings

The Nyetimber range has been designed with food in mind. Each wine has been meticulously crafted for flavour, depth and extraordinary balance, taking full advantage of the exceptional versatility of English sparkling wine and its bright texture and balancing acidity. The flagship Classic Cuvee is the all-purpose aperitif, pairing with seafood, sushi and smoked salmon. Rosé MV works year-round with weightier dishes from salmon fillets to duck. Cuvee Chérie is the natural partner for dessert, while the Blanc de Blancs and Tillington Single Vineyard shine with delicate white fish, crab, lobster and monkfish. The 1086 wines, with their added texture, length and richness, are reserved for the most indulgent pairings: caviar, lobster, turbot, scallops, sashimi and oysters.

For couples planning a wedding, Nyetimber's wedding team offers a comprehensive service. Bespoke wine packages begin with the Nyetimber Toast package (60+ bottles of Classic Cuvee MV or any main range wine, plus a personalised magnum and bottle stopper), continue with the Nyetimber Experience (120+ bottles, plus a personalised magnum and two Open Day tickets) and reach their peak with the Prestigious Experience (60+ bottles of 1086 or 1086 Rosé, plus a private tour of the estate for six). Visit the Estate: Open Days and Experiences

The Nyetimber Estate is not normally open to the public, but during the summer months the team welcomes visitors for a series of memorable experiences.

Open Day Tours

The Open Day Tour begins with a welcome in the White Barn and an introduction to the estate's rich history. Guests then take a guided walking tour through the historic Nyetimber vineyards, home to some of the oldest vines in England, before stepping inside the 15th-century Medieval Barn for a guided tasting of Classic Cuvee Multi-Vintage, Rosé Multi-Vintage, Cuvee Chérie Multi-Vintage and Blanc de Blancs 2017. The experience lasts two and a half hours and costs £50 per person, with the ticket value redeemable against a case of six bottles purchased on the day. Open Day tickets can be booked in groups of up to four per order, and are released periodically throughout the season from the Nyetimber shop. Note that visitors must be 18+, dogs (except assistance dogs) are not permitted, and taxis from Pulborough or Billingshurst must be booked in advance.

1086 by Nyetimber Paired Dining Experience

For an ultimate tasting experience, guests are invited to a refined four-course seasonal dinner paired with Nyetimber wines, including the prestige cuvée 1086, hosted in the atmospheric White Barn setting. Tickets are £195 per person.

A Sparkling Celebration of Seafood

Executive Chef Steven Edwards, appointed to the Nyetimber Estate in 2026, curates a luxurious seafood-led menu to accompany Nyetimber's award-winning wines. Tickets are £220 per person.

Exclusive Brand Ambassador Tastings

Held at a venue of the customer's choice, a Nyetimber Brand Ambassador will host a tutored tasting of Classic Cuvee MV, Rosé MV, Cuvee Chérie MV, Blanc de Blancs and Tillington Single Vineyard, including insights into Nyetimber's history, traditional method production and tasting technique. Sessions last approximately 1.5 hours and cost £1,700 for up to 10 attendees. Bookings are taken via the dedicated line on 0800 804 8107 or by emailing experiences@nyetimber.com.

Events and Sponsorships

Nyetimber's events calendar sees the brand appear at some of Britain's most iconic sporting and cultural occasions. The Nyetimber Bus - a beautifully reimagined 1968 Routemaster with a handcrafted copper bar and a Union Jack cut from English oak - attends the Henley Royal Regatta, the Queen's Championships Tennis, the Cheltenham Festival, the Epsom Derby and Newmarket's Guineas. The brand is also the Official Sparkling Wine Partner of both England Rugby and Richmond Rugby Club, where a magnum of Nyetimber is presented to the Player of the Match after every Men's and Women's first team game. Nyetimber also appears at Glyndebourne Festival Opera, the Shipley Arts Festival and a rolling programme of terraces and pop-ups at The Ned, Dalloway Terrace, 34 Mayfair and Heathrow Terminal 5.

Awards and Recognition

Nyetimber's trophy cabinet is remarkable for an English producer of its size. In 2025 the Blanc de Blancs 2016 Magnum became the first ever non-Champagne wine to win the Champion Sparkling Wine Trophy at the International Wine Challenge in the competition's 34-year history, scoring 97 points and described by judges as "a time capsule of a wine with mouth-watering acidity, citrus zest and camomile, with a chalky finish." Cherie Spriggs also reclaimed the Sparkling Winemaker of the Year trophy for the second time. Nyetimber 1086 was named top scoring global sparkling wine at the London Wine Fair's Battle of the Bubbles, and Nyetimber has been named English Wine Producer of the Year at the International Wine & Spirit Competition a record eight times. In 2026, The Real Review awarded Nyetimber Winery of the Year Great Britain for the second year running - the first English winery to retain the title - with 1086 by Nyetimber 2014 taking Sparkling Wine of the Year at 97 points.

Corporate Social Responsibility

Nyetimber's environment, community and people programmes are guided by three core values: Pioneer, Exceptional and Joie de Vivre. Around 30% of the estate is dedicated to natural habitat, including broadleaved woodland and wildflower meadows; sheep from a local farm provide winter grazing; pruning waste and pressed grape skins are composted back into the vineyards; and the foil capsule on every bottle is made from a plant-derived laminate rather than synthetic polymer. Since 2008 Nyetimber bottles have weighed 835g - a 10% saving on the industry standard - reducing transport, fuel and emissions across every shipment.

In the community, Nyetimber partners with the South Downs National Park Trust (including the 1000-trees "Trees for the Downs" campaign and the wildflower corridor "Beelines" project), WSET School London, Le Cordon Bleu London and Plumpton College, alongside a wide network of Sussex-based charities and local organisations. The estate hosts annual Educational Days, the Amberley Locals event and the West Chiltington Village Show tasting tent.
