Plumpton College, Rock Lodge Vineyard: England's Wine Education Powerhouse in the South Downs
Tucked into the rolling chalk downland of the South Downs National Park, just a few miles south of Lewes in East Sussex, sits one of the most influential vineyards in the English wine story. Rock Lodge Vineyard is the working commercial vineyard at the heart of Plumpton College - a 10-hectare site that produces around 40,000 bottles of award-winning still and sparkling wine each year while also serving as a living classroom for the next generation of British vineyard managers, winemakers and wine business professionals.
Plumpton College is, by some margin, the UK's centre of excellence for wine education, training and research. It is the only institution in Europe that offers a full suite of English-taught university degrees in viticulture and oenology, and in recognition of its impact on the English and Welsh wine sector it was awarded the prestigious Queen's Anniversary Prize, the highest national honour in UK further and higher education.
A 100-year-old college with a wine revolution at its core
Plumpton's story began in 1919, when the original 400-acre college farm was bought. Over the past century the institution has evolved from a single-discipline agricultural college into a broad land-based college teaching everything from adventure education and animal management to blacksmithing, horticulture and veterinary nursing. The wine programme, however, is the area that has done most to put the college on the international map.
The introduction of viticulture and oenology teaching transformed Plumpton from a teaching institution into a national reference point for an industry that WineGB estimates will need to grow from around 2,000 employees today to roughly 24,000 by 2040. Rock Lodge Vineyard is the engine room of that mission.
Rock Lodge Vineyard and the Plumpton Wine Centre
Ten hectares of vines are planted at Rock Lodge, producing classic cool-climate grape varieties destined for the bottle. The fruit is processed in the purpose-built Plumpton Wine Centre, a state-of-the-art facility that includes:
- A commercial winery used for student-led production runs
- A separate research winery for experimental and trial-scale winemaking
- Dedicated laboratories for wine analysis
- A sensory evaluation room where students learn to assess wines professionally
Students on the BSc (Hons) Viticulture, Oenology & Business Management degree and the FdSc Wine Production & Business Management foundation degree learn to manage every step of the process - from pruning and canopy management through to harvest, pressing, fermentation, blending, tirage and disgorgement.
Plumpton Estate: award-winning wines made by students
The wines that come off Rock Lodge are bottled under the Plumpton Estate label. Plumpton College describes its wines as "crafted by students studying BSc Viticulture & Oenology and FdSc Wine Production degree courses under the guidance of our Vineyard Manager and Winemaker." Both still and sparkling styles are produced, and they have picked up awards at national and international competitions.

Because the wine is a learning product rather than a mass-market range, availability is necessarily limited and stocks change with each vintage.
A teaching team of international reputation
What sets the Plumpton wine programme apart is the calibre of the lecturing team. The Wine Division includes specialists in vine physiology, cool-climate oenology, sparkling winemaking and wine business, with team members introduced individually through the Meet the Wine Division profiles. Lecturers come with practical industry backgrounds - many still consult for commercial wineries across the UK and abroad - and Plumpton's Wine Division is regularly cited as the first port of call when English and Welsh producers need technical advice.
In addition to degree programmes, the college offers an extensive portfolio of short courses, part-time certificates and apprenticeships through the National Wine Training Programme, structured across three levels:
- Introduction - core skills and knowledge for entry to the industry
- Intermediate - courses such as the popular Principles of Vinegrowing, Winemaking and Wine Business
- Advanced - in-depth expertise for experienced professionals, including Advanced Principles of Sparkling Winemaking and Advanced Winemaking Techniques

The Crop Technician (Viticulture) Apprenticeship
For those who prefer to learn on the job, Plumpton runs the Crop Technician (Viticulture) Level 3 Apprenticeship. Apprentices split their time between Rock Lodge and other commercial vineyards, earning a wage while studying towards a recognised qualification. The apprenticeship route has become increasingly important as the English wine industry expands and producers struggle to recruit trained vineyard staff.
The Skills Bootcamp in Viticulture
Plumpton has also launched a Skills Bootcamp: Vineyard Operative programme aimed at adults over 19. The bootcamp is free for eligible learners (subject to criteria) and is designed to fast-track new entrants into vineyard work. Past bootcamp graduates have credited the course with giving them the confidence to take on new roles in the wine industry, including helping to build a cellar door at their place of work.

The Plumpton Wine Resilience Fund
To mark its centenary year in 2026, Plumpton College launched the Plumpton Wine Resilience Fund, pledging £500,000 of fully funded short-course training for the English wine industry. Running from January to July 2026, the fund provides free places on Plumpton's industry-short courses for wine businesses and professionals seeking to strengthen their operations during a challenging economic period. The fund is open to all eligible students under set terms and conditions.
The National Competency Framework for the UK Wine Industry
Another milestone for Rock Lodge and the wider Wine Division was the launch of the first-ever National Competency Framework (NCF) for the UK wine industry. Developed by Plumpton with the support of a generous grant from the Vintners' Company, the NCF sets out the skills and knowledge required at each stage of a wine career - from vineyard operative through to head winemaker and business owner. It is the strategic backbone of Plumpton's claim to be the UK's centre of excellence for the sector.
National Wine Careers Week
Plumpton co-founded National Wine Careers Week with Nyetimber, and the annual event returns each May (in 2026 running from 12 to 18 May). The week is designed to showcase the breadth of roles available in the wine trade - from sommelier and lab technician to vineyard manager and brand owner - and to encourage career changers and school leavers to consider viticulture and oenology as a profession.
Plumpton in the South Downs
Rock Lodge sits within Plumpton's wider 800-hectare estate. The estate is set in the heart of the South Downs National Park, a stone's throw from Brighton, and the wider campus also hosts:
- The 780-hectare commercial farming estate with Sussex beef cattle, a 300-cow dairy, 550 ewes and a sow pig unit
- The Animal Management Unit, with amphibians, birds, fish, livestock, mammals and reptiles
- The Equine Management department with two indoor schools, stabling for 41 horses, a 30m × 60m outdoor ménage and a cross-country course
- The Fisheries & Aquatic Science facilities, including a one-acre lake and purpose-built aquaculture production fish farm
- The Stanmer Campus at One Garden Brighton in Stanmer Park, where horticulture and floristry students study and the public can visit the restored Walled Garden
Plumpton was ranked top three in the UK for land-based teaching in the National Student Survey 2025.
Royal recognition and centenary celebrations
In July 2026, Her Majesty The Queen visited Plumpton College as part of its centenary celebrations, a fitting way to mark 100 years of land-based education in East Sussex. The college also hosted its largest-ever Open Day and Spring Fair earlier in the year, with thousands of visitors flocking to the campus.

While Rock Lodge Vineyard does not run a regular public tour programme in the same way as a commercial winery, the easiest way to visit is to come along to one of the college's Open Events. The next opportunities are:

Open Events include informal campus tours, talks from the Principal Jeremy Kerswell, curriculum-specific sessions and information on the Wine Division based at the Wine Centre. Wear sturdy footwear; much of the day takes place outdoors and the campus can get muddy.
