Roebuck Estates: English Sparkling Wine from a West Sussex Vineyard

Tucked into the rolling West Sussex countryside a mile or so west of the market town of Petworth, Roebuck Estates has quietly become one of England’s most talked-about vintage sparkling wine producers. With a six-parcel patchwork of vineyards spread across Sussex and Kent, a tasting venue called The View perched at the top of their home estate, a brand-new summer wine bar inside Brighton’s Royal Pavilion Rooms, and a bulging trophy cabinet, Roebuck Estates is the kind of producer that even Jancis Robinson picks out as “a producer that stands out from the crowd.” Below is a complete guide to the winery, the wines, the tours, the gift sets, and the seasonal events you can book for a summer 2026 visit.

The Roebuck Story

Roebuck Estates was founded in 2013 by two friends who shared a passion for great wine and a clear ambition: to craft exceptional vintage English sparkling wines every single year that could be enjoyed all over the world. To achieve that goal, they knew they would need to source the very best grapes from the finest vineyard sites in England, so they purchased their first parcel of land in West Sussex and Roebuck Estates was born.

The name is a tribute to the wild roe deer that are often seen roaming the vines. Like the animal, the team says, they aim to leave the lightest possible footprint on their environment - a theme that runs through everything from the sustainability programme to the packaging. Their debut vintage was released in 2019, and since then the wines have won numerous trophies and awards at prestigious global wine competitions and can be found on the lists of some of the finest restaurants in the UK and beyond.

The Vineyards

Roebuck Estates farms six parcels of land - around 70 individual blocks of vines - spread across West Sussex, East Sussex and Kent. The team grows the classic Champenois trio of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, with each parcel planted with the specific clones and rootstocks best suited to its soil and microclimate. Blocks are tracked individually using a viticulture software system called Sectormentor, allowing the team to be precise about canopy, yield and harvest timing. The six sites are:

  • Roebuck - Tillington, West Sussex. The home vineyard, sitting in a natural amphitheatre just outside the village of Tillington with stunning southerly views toward the South Downs. Home to the estate’s oldest vines, planted in 2006, on heat-retaining greensand soils that lend elegance and finesse. This is where The View tasting area and the new Sparkling Wine Bar sit.
  • Roman Villa - Bignor, West Sussex. Just under 15 acres of exclusively Pinot Noir planted in 2007 on south-facing loam and clay-rich slopes, sheltered by the Downs. Gives great structure and depth to the blends.
  • Little Brockhurst - Lurgashall, West Sussex. Planted in 2014 in the foothills of Black Down, on a mix of flint, clay and sandy soils, the 17 acres of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier produce exceptional fruit with real complexity.
  • Waterlands - Slinfold, West Sussex. Planted in 2017 with the full Champenois trio, on south-facing slopes that produce wonderfully ripe fruit adding texture, depth and richness to the blends.
  • Hazelhurst - Ticehurst, East Sussex. Just over 40 acres across eight distinct blocks, planted on heat-retaining sandstone soils overlooking the Bewl Water reservoir, contributing richness and complexity.
  • Chalkhill Blue - Bilting, Kent. The newest 35-acre site on classic chalk soils with fantastic drainage. Named after the beautiful Chalkhill Blue butterfly native to the local area.

Crafting the Wines

From the vineyard to the bottle, Roebuck’s philosophy is six steps long, and every step is built around the idea of producing a wine that is a true expression of the growing season.

1. Hand in hand with nature

Each of the 70 blocks is monitored individually, with only the finest, perfectly ripe bunches selected at harvest.

2. Handpicked fruit

Individual bunches are harvested by hand to preserve fruit integrity and gently whole-bunch pressed at the winery, yielding only the highest-quality juice.

3. Vintage only

Every Roebuck sparkling wine is vintage only - produced from the harvest of a single year and blended from the classic Champenois trio, made according to the traditional method.

4. Respect for tradition

Each block is vinified separately, and a small proportion of the wines are partially fermented in fine, aged Burgundian oak barrels, adding complexity, depth and texture.

5. The art of blending

Pinot Noir brings structure and texture, Chardonnay brings elegance, acidity and aromatics, and Pinot Meunier fills the gaps with floral and perfumed notes. Blending is where the picture of the vintage comes into focus.

6. Aged to perfection

The wines are lees-aged in bottle for a minimum of three years, followed by significant time on cork before release. The most recent Blanc de Blancs 2019 was aged on lees for more than five years.

The Sparkling Wine Collection

Every Roebuck wine is bottled in the traditional method and is suitable for both vegetarians and vegans. The current collection, with cellar-door prices, includes:

Classic Cuvée 2020 - From £38

The signature blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, grown across the Roebuck, Little Brockhurst and Waterlands vineyards. Pale gold, with baked apples, ripe citrus, a biscuity richness and a hint of sweet spice. Elegant, refined and refreshingly balanced, the 2020 is built for seafood and canapés.

Rosé de Noirs 2020 - From £42

Hand-picked Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier from the Roebuck, Little Brockhurst, Roman Villa and Waterlands vineyards, with a splash of Pinot Précoce added at disgorgement for colour. Wild strawberries, red berries and toasted walnuts on a base of biscuity richness and vibrant acidity. Minimally 48 months on lees.

Blanc de Noirs 2018 - From £50

Made only in exceptional years, this 100% Pinot Noir from the Roman Villa vineyard delivers delicate bubbles, a silky texture and a long, exquisite finish, with citrus, baked apples, toasted brioche, honey and sweet spice.

Blanc de Blancs 2019 - From £50

The latest release: 100% Chardonnay from the Roebuck and Little Brockhurst vineyards, partially fermented in old Burgundian oak and aged on lees for more than five years. Delicate citrus, stone fruits, white flowers and toasted hazelnut on a long, beautifully balanced finish.

Rosé Reserve 2019 - From £35

Recently awarded an outstanding 96 points at the International Wine Challenge 2025, taking Gold and the English Sparkling Rosé Trophy. Vibrant raspberries, apricot and subtle toasted hazelnut.

Rare Expressions No.19 - From £95

A limited-edition 2015 single-clone wine from the Roman Villa vineyard, aged slowly on lees for seven to eight years. Ripe peach, baked apples, honeysuckle and toasted almonds. A wine for cellaring or marking a milestone.

Rare Expressions No.96 - From £95

The 2014 vintage, deep golden in the glass, with toasted walnuts, candied citrus peel, honey and a biscuity richness from extended bottle ageing.

The team has introduced beehives, bird houses, insect hotels, reptile habitats, wildflower meadows and a winter flock of sheep to strengthen biodiversity. Packaging is equally considered: Roebuck uses Absolute Greenline neck foils made from plant-based polyethene derived from sugar cane and printed with water-based ink, and all wine boxes are fully recyclable.
