Holmfirth Vineyard & Sheveling Wine Estate: A Yorkshire Vineyard Above the Holme Valley

Set high on a south-facing slope above the Holme Valley, Holmfirth Vineyard, the home of Sheveling Wine Estates, is one of Yorkshire's most distinctive working vineyards. The estate combines a productive English vineyard with a restaurant, tasting lounge, vineyard tours, self-catering holiday accommodation and a long-established wedding venue, all of it framed by panoramic views across the Peak District National Park.

Where to find Holmfirth Vineyard

The vineyard sits on Woodhouse Lane, just above the village of Holmbridge and a short drive south of the centre of Holmfirth. The full postal address is Holmfirth Vineyard, Woodhouse Lane, Holmbridge, Holmfirth, HD9 2QR. From Holmfirth, head south along Woodhead Road (the A6024) for around five minutes, then turn left at the Stumble Inn pub, look out for the brown tourist sign, and follow the lane up the hill to the top. The main vineyard building is visible from the road and the car park entrance is just beyond it.

Guests are asked to use the on-site car park rather than parking on the highway. Get directions to Holmfirth Vineyard.

The story of a Yorkshire vineyard

Sheveling Wine Estates is the company behind Holmfirth Vineyard, and the site has steadily grown into one of the most recognisable wine tourism destinations in West Yorkshire. The vineyard is worked with hybrid grape varieties chosen specifically for their ability to thrive in the cooler, wetter conditions of the Holme Valley. As well as growing the grapes, the team vinifies on site, so the journey from vine to bottle happens within a few hundred metres of the cellar door.

The estate's award-winning English wines are the centrepiece of the visitor experience. Visitors can sample them on a guided tour, pair them with food in the tasting lounge, or take a bottle home after dinner. Sister-vineyard Robin Hoods Bay Vineyard extends the Sheveling footprint along the Yorkshire coast.

Opening hours and when to visit

The estate is open seven days a week, with the restaurant and bars opening at 9am. Vineyard tour and tasting sessions are scheduled into every day of the week:

  • Monday to Thursday: 9am - restaurant opens; 9am - 10am breakfast; 12pm - 2.45pm lunch; 12pm - 4.30pm afternoon tea; 3pm vineyard tour and tasting (booking not essential); 5pm - 6.30pm dinner; 8.30pm restaurant closes.
  • Friday and Saturday: 9am - restaurant opens; 9am - 10am breakfast; 10.30am and 3pm vineyard tour and tasting (booking essential); 12pm - 2.45pm lunch; 12pm - 4.30pm afternoon tea; 5pm - 7pm dinner; 9.30pm restaurant closes.
  • Sunday: 9am - restaurant opens; 9am - 10am breakfast; 10.30am and 3pm vineyard tour and tasting (booking essential); 12pm - 6pm Sunday lunch; 12pm - 4.30pm afternoon tea; 8pm restaurant closes.

Due to private events, the vineyard is closed after 10.30am on a number of dates through the year, including weekends throughout the wedding season from spring to early winter. The vineyard publishes a full list of closure dates, and guests are advised to check before travelling.

Vineyard tours and wine tastings

The signature experience at Holmfirth Vineyard is the vineyard tour and tasting, designed to take visitors from the vine to the bottle. A guided walk through the vines (weather permitting) introduces the hybrid grape varieties that thrive in the valley, explains the practical realities of managing a vineyard in this part of Yorkshire, and answers questions about pruning, yield and the unpredictability of the English climate. The tour then moves inside for a closer look at the production process before finishing with a guided tasting of three of the estate's Yorkshire wines.

Tours last approximately 60 to 90 minutes and are run twice a day at 10.30am and 3pm. Booking is essential on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. The ground in the vineyard is steep and uneven in places, so suitable outdoor clothing and footwear are recommended.

Prices for vineyard tours and tastings

  • Standard tour (one person): £20.00
  • Vineyard tour and wine tasting for 2: £40.00
  • Lunch or dinner with vineyard tour & tasting for 2: £99.00 (includes £25 per person towards lunch or dinner)

The restaurant, tasting lounge and menus

The estate's restaurant, known as the Tasting Lounge, is built around the view. Floor-to-ceiling windows, a heated conservatory and an outdoor terrace all look out over the vines and across the Holme Valley, so guests can soak up the landscape whatever the weather. The team encourages diners to pair their meal with one of the estate's own wines or to choose from a wider wine list, with experienced staff on hand to help.

Menus run from breakfast through to dinner, seven days a week:

Tables can be reserved through the Togo booking system. The restaurant, conservatory and outside terrace can also be booked for private functions and group bookings.

Afternoon tea at the vineyard

Afternoon tea is one of Holmfirth Vineyard's most popular experiences. Served in the tasting lounge or on the terrace, it pairs traditional sandwiches, savouries, cakes and scones with a glass of sparkling wine (or a soft drink alternative) and Yorkshire tea or filter coffee. The standard, sparkling, vegetarian and gluten-free afternoon tea menus all have their own gift voucher options for guests who want to give the experience as a present.

Stay at The Retreat

A short walk down the slope from the restaurant sits The Retreat, the vineyard's collection of self-catering holiday apartments. There are seven apartments in total, ranging from one-bedroom units up to a three-bedroom property, all super-insulated and designed with carbon neutrality in mind. Power is generated on site by a wind turbine.

The apartments

  • Seyval - one bedroom
  • Acalon - one bedroom
  • Rondo - two bedroom
  • Solaris - three bedroom (and the Honeymoon Suite used by wedding couples)

Each apartment has a fully equipped kitchen, a log-burning stove, en-suite bathrooms, TVs in all bedrooms and high-end fixtures and fittings. Optional upgrades include breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, dinner and the vineyard tour and tasting session. Guests have free use of Wi-Fi, the laundry room, the bar and restaurant, secure bicycle parking and a bicycle washing area, plus easy access to Holmfirth town and the Peak District.

Winter Warmer Stay Over

The vineyard's Winter Warmer Stay Over package runs from 1 October 2025 until 31 March 2026 and is available seven days a week. • Midweek stays - from £82.50 per person
  • Friday and Sunday stays - from £92.50 per person
  • Saturday stays - from £102.50 per person

One well-behaved pet is permitted in specific pet-friendly apartments for an additional £10, and additional nights can be booked at £50 per person per night on a bed-and-breakfast basis. A 50% deposit is required at the time of booking, with the balance settled at check-in.

Weddings at Holmfirth Vineyard

Weddings are a major part of the estate's identity. The function room, with its floor-to-ceiling windows and panoramic views over the vines, is licensed for civil ceremonies and can accommodate private groups of up to 140 guests. Couples can choose from indoor ceremonies, outdoor blessings and twilight weddings, with the option of taking over the entire venue for the day.

Wedding packages include a complimentary Honeymoon Suite at The Retreat, where self-catering apartments are also available for guests. A free shuttle runs between the vineyard and the accommodation throughout the evening. The estate's own wines are paired with the wedding breakfast and a glass of the sparkling wine is offered for the toast. The in-house DJ, Tall Paul, is a familiar name to couples who have held their day at the vineyard.

Wedding reviews collected by the estate run from 2018 through to late 2025, with couples praising the team, particularly Tom, Holly, Ash and Helena, for the smooth running of the day, the quality of the food and the dramatic views regardless of the weather. A copy of the latest wedding brochure can be requested from the weddings team.
