Vanguard Vineyard - A Family-Run English Vineyard on the South Downs

Vanguard Vineyard is a small, family-owned and family-run English vineyard tucked into the rolling landscape of East Sussex. Sitting high enough to overlook the South Downs, the estate borders the Vanguard Way, the 66-mile long-distance walking route that threads its way from the suburbs of London down to the sea. It is a fitting location for a vineyard that takes its name from the path that passes its gate: a quiet, pioneering corner of the English wine country where a young family has set out to craft still and sparkling wines of real character from their own vines.

What makes Vanguard Vineyard stand out is the combination of provenance, soil and a deeply personal approach. Every vine is tended by hand, every bunch of grapes is harvested by hand, and every bottle that leaves the estate carries the fingerprints of the four family members who run the business. The result is a tightly focused portfolio of English wines - a still rosé, a traditional-method Classic Cuvée, a limited-release Sparkling Rosé and a pair of mixed cases - that together showcase the cool-climate expression of classic Champagne varieties grown on the Greensand ridge of the South Downs.

A vineyard on the Vanguard Way

The Vanguard Way is one of south-east England's quieter long-distance footpaths. Stretching roughly 66 miles from the outer suburbs of south London to the coast, it passes through Surrey and Kent before dipping into East Sussex, where Vanguard Vineyard sits at its edge. For walkers completing the route, the vineyard provides a literal and figurative waymark - a working landscape that marks the transition from the city to the sea.

The vineyard itself sits on a slope with open views across the South Downs. Its soils are silty clay loam, a fine, moisture-retentive earth that suits the slow, even ripening demanded by the classic Champagne varieties: Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay. The aspect, the elevation and the maritime influence of the south coast all combine to give the site a longer, cooler growing season - exactly the conditions in which traditional-method English sparkling wine thrives.

A family business, vine to wine

Vanguard Vineyard is the work of four family members - Jonathan, George, Julie and James - who have spent the last couple of years working tirelessly to maintain and nurture the vineyard. From pruning and canopy management through to the harvest and the eventual hand-bottling of the wines, every stage of production is carried out under the family's direct supervision.

The estate describes itself as having produced "a handsome yield of grapes from vine to wine", and it is that end-to-end control that defines the Vanguard approach. There is no third-party contract winemaking here, no anonymous fruit bought in from elsewhere. Every bottle that carries the Vanguard Vineyard label begins life as a single bunch on a single vine in East Sussex, picked and processed by the family that owns the land.

The team behind the bottles

  • Jonathan and James are involved in the vineyard and business operations.
  • George and Julie complete the four-person team, bringing the family ethos to the winery.

For a young English estate, that depth of family involvement is unusual and gives Vanguard Vineyard the kind of close attention to detail that larger commercial producers cannot replicate.

The Vanguard Vineyard wine range

Vanguard's release programme is intentionally small. Rather than chasing volume, the family focuses on three core wines and a pair of mixed cases designed to introduce drinkers to the full house style. Every wine is sold in cases of six bottles, with a 10% discount applied across the range. Orders are taken on an enquiry basis.

Still Rosé - 2023 Vintage

The estate's first release is a Still Rosé made from 100% 2023 Vintage Pinot Noir. Designed to be versatile - "ideal for warm sunny days (or cold dark nights)" - the wine shows the delicate aromatic lift and pale colour that cool-climate Pinot Noir delivers in England. On the nose and palate there are aromas and flavours of red fruits, citrus, strawberries and cream, with a refreshing, restoring acidity that makes it a natural partner for summer lunches, salads and grilled fish. It is bottled as the definitive expression of an English summer.

Classic Cuvée - Traditional Method

The Classic Cuvée is Vanguard's take on a traditional-method English sparkling wine. It is made in the classic blend of Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay, with secondary fermentation in bottle to create the fine, persistent mousse the house style demands. The nose shows citrus and stone fruits; the palate adds melon, lemon and apricots, all wrapped around a well-balanced structure with small bubbles and a long finish. It is the bottle the family reaches for when there is something to celebrate.

Sparkling Rosé - Limited Release

Their Sparkling Rosé is a limited release made predominantly from Chardonnay, with a supporting cast of red-skinned varieties that give the wine its delicate pink hue. Aromas of strawberry leaf, red apple and rosemary lead into a palate of plum, red fruits and strawberries and cream, balanced again by small bubbles and a long, savoury finish. The Chardonnay backbone gives it more lift and tension than a typical rosé sparkling, making it equally at home as an aperitif or alongside food.

Cases and mixed selections

For customers who want to compare the full range side by side, Vanguard Vineyard offers two pre-built cases:

  • Mixed Case - a curated selection of wines across the estate's portfolio, packaged as a single six-bottle case at a 10% saving.
  • Sparkling Case - 3 bottles of Classic Cuvée plus 3 bottles of Sparkling Rosé, offering a head-to-head tasting of the two sparkling styles the estate produces.

All products are sold in cases of six bottles, with a 10% discount applied to every order.

Visiting Vanguard Vineyard

The estate does not currently advertise formal tours, tastings or open days, and there is no booking system for visits. Because the vineyard sits directly on the Vanguard Way, walkers tackling the long-distance path pass through the heart of the vineyard during the summer months, with a clear view of how the vines sit within the wider landscape.

Why Vanguard Vineyard matters

English wine is one of the most exciting categories in modern British food and drink, and small family estates like Vanguard Vineyard are the engine room of that growth. By planting the classic Champagne varieties on a site that genuinely suits them, by doing the slow, careful work of canopy management and hand harvesting, and by keeping the winemaking under family control, Vanguard has produced a portfolio that punches well above its weight: a fragrant 2023 Pinot Noir still rosé, a taut and elegant traditional-method Classic Cuvée, and a limited-release Sparkling Rosé that leans on Chardonnay for structure.

Add in the setting - a vineyard that doubles as a waymark on a 66-mile footpath from London to the sea - and Vanguard Vineyard is more than just another small English winery. It is a working landscape, a family project and a quietly ambitious addition to the growing reputation of South Downs wine.
