Ampelography

Ampelography is the science of identifying, classifying and describing grapevines by the shape, colour and structure of their leaves, shoots, tendrils, flowers and berries. It is the foundation of the world's vine variety catalogues, and it matters in the UK because the right clone on the right rootstock can be the difference between a good and a great English wine.

A working definition

The word comes from the Greek ampelos (vine) and graphein (to write). In practice, an ampelographer walks a vineyard with a hand lens, a reference book and a notebook, comparing every detail of a vine against a known standard. Leaf shape alone is not enough. The shape of the teeth on the leaf margin, the density of the hairs on the underside (technically the tomentum), the colour of the young shoot tip, the size and shape of the berry, the flavour of the pip and the way the cluster sits on the cane are all weighed together.

Modern ampelography is increasingly supported by DNA fingerprinting, which has cleaned up centuries of confusion caused by synonyms, local names and accidental crossings. But the field skills still matter, because somebody has to walk a row and decide which plant is the true variety and which is a rogue.

Why it matters to UK growers

UK vineyards are relatively young as a commercial industry, and most of them are planted within the last twenty-five years. That means the planting decisions taken now will define English and Welsh wine for decades. Choosing the right clone of Pinot Noir for a chalky Sussex slope is not the same as choosing one for a sandy East Anglian site. Ampelography, supported by trial plot data, helps growers pick the combination that will ripen reliably, resist disease and produce the flavour profile they want.

It is also how the UK's heritage varieties are being rescued. Once-common East Anglian crossings such as Schönburger, Reichensteiner and Madeleine Angevine were nearly lost when the post-war industry collapsed. Modern ampelographic work at places such as the National Collection at Plumpton College in East Sussex has re-identified and catalogued them, and they are now returning to commercial planting as climate-resilient options.

Tools and techniques

The traditional method still starts with a leaf pressed between paper and compared to reference specimens. A modern vineyard walk also uses a portable refractometer to test berry sugar and a small pH meter to track maturity, but the varietal identification is still fundamentally visual. Larger operations and research stations use genetic markers, with simple sequence repeat (SSR) testing the most common. This can separate, for example, true Pinot Noir from Pinot Meunier or Pinot Gris, which look superficially similar but taste quite different.

UK institutions and references

Plumpton College, near Lewes in East Sussex, runs the country's only undergraduate degree in viticulture and oenology and acts as a working ampelographic reference. The East Malling Research site in Kent, formerly a fruit research station, has done significant work on rootstock and variety trials relevant to UK conditions. The NIAB (National Institute of Agricultural Botany) at East Malling maintains reference plantings and offers free or low-cost variety verification to growers.
