Phylloxera

Phylloxera is a tiny insect, Daktulosphaira vitifoliae, native to North America, that devastated European vineyards in the late 19th century. It attacks the roots of Vitis vinifera vines, eventually killing them. The solution, developed in the 1880s, was to graft European varieties onto resistant American rootstocks. Phylloxera is still present in most wine regions, including the UK, and every modern UK vineyard is planted on a phylloxera-resistant rootstock.
The history
Phylloxera arrived in Europe in the 1860s, almost certainly carried on American vine cuttings imported for botanical study. It spread with extraordinary speed, attacking and killing vineyard after vineyard. By the 1890s, more than 40 percent of French vineyards were destroyed, and the wine industry was in crisis. Spain, Italy, Portugal, Germany and most other European countries were also affected.
The cure, developed by Jules Émile Planchon and Charles Valentine Riley, was to graft European Vitis vinifera varieties onto American rootstocks, which had evolved resistance to the insect. The scion, the upper part of the vine, produces the wine grapes. The rootstock, the lower part, resists the insect. The technique worked, and within a few decades the world's vineyards were replanted on resistant rootstocks.
Phylloxera in the UK
The UK was less affected by the original 19th-century phylloxera outbreak than mainland Europe, partly because the cool climate slowed the insect's life cycle and partly because the UK had a smaller vineyard area to infect. However, phylloxera is now present in the UK, and every commercial planting is on a resistant rootstock.
The most common rootstocks in the UK are 3309C, 101-14, 5C, SO4 and Riparia Gloire. Each has different vigour, drought tolerance, phylloxera resistance and adaptation to chalky or sandy soils. The choice of rootstock is one of the most important decisions a UK grower makes, because it shapes how the vine interacts with the soil and the climate for the next 30 years.
Why this matters in the UK
The UK is building its vineyards on the lessons of phylloxera. Every new planting is grafted, and the choice of rootstock is now part of the planning conversation. A chalky Sussex site with high pH and good drainage might use 41B or Fercal, rootstocks that tolerate chalk. A sandy East Anglian site with low vigour might use 101-14, which has a more modest growth habit.
The cost of grafted vines is higher than own-rooted cuttings, and the planting process is more careful, but the protection against phylloxera is essential. There is no realistic alternative for UK viticulture.
Future risks
Phylloxera is still a moving target. New biotypes of the insect occasionally appear that overcome specific rootstock resistance, and researchers are constantly monitoring the situation. Climate change may also affect the insect's life cycle, potentially allowing it to spread to regions that were previously too cold.
For the UK, the practical message is simple. Plant grafted vines, choose the rootstock carefully, and monitor the vineyard for signs of the insect. So far, the UK has not had a major phylloxera outbreak in modern times, and the industry is determined to keep it that way.
