The Origins of the Estate

Crouch Valley Vineyard was born out of a desire to diversify the family farm. After researching the possibilities of wine growing, the founders planted the first vines in 2007, making Crouch Valley one of the earliest vineyards established in the new age of English viticulture. The initial plantings focused on classic Champagne varieties: Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Noir.

From those early beginnings, the vineyard has grown to its current size of 35 acres. Alongside the original varieties, the estate now also cultivates Pinot Meunier, Solaris and Reichensteiner, a thoughtful mix of traditional and modern grape varieties that reflects both the ambition and the experimentation of the modern English wine scene.

From Grape to Glass: The Winemaker Partners

Crouch Valley Vineyard supplies grapes to a curated portfolio of English winemakers, and the results have been remarkable. Each winemaker brings their own approach to the fruit, creating wines that together showcase the versatility and quality of the estate's harvest.

Blackbook Winery

Blackbook Winery is the first solo project from winemaker Sergio Verrillo and his wife Lynsey. Both passionate Londoners and oenophiles, they long held the dream of starting an urban winery in London that could stand alongside many of the great wineries around the globe.

One of Blackbook's signature wines, the Blackbook 2018 Rosé, is made from Pinot Noir grapes sourced from Crouch Valley Vineyard in nearby Essex. The grapes are hand-picked into small crates and travel the short distance to the winery in Battersea. After a short cold soak, the grapes are pressed and fermented in old French oak. The wine spends a further six months on lees in tank and barrel, resulting in an expressive and textured rosé with elements of strawberries and cream and ripe red cherry.

Lyme Bay Winery

Lyme Bay Winery is the home of LBW Drinks, a small, dedicated drinks company full of people passionate about producing delicious and award-winning English wine, fruit wine, cider, mead, liqueurs and spirits from their home in Devon's beautiful Axe Valley.

Lyme Bay has crafted three notable wines from Crouch Valley grapes:

Classic Cuvée - 2015 Vintage: An elegant sparkling wine showing a depth of citrus and stone fruit flavours, along with the more complex secondary aromas of cooked apples, breadcrumbs, honey and almond. Delicate fine bubbles, golden colour with a slight blush tint, crisp finesse and full mouthfeel. Made from 100% Crouch Valley Vineyard grapes.
Sparkling Rosé - NV: A vibrant sparkling rosé made from Pinot Noir with a bright, fruit-driven palate rich in honey and hints of brioche. Steady fine bubbles and aromas of wild strawberries, pepper and redcurrant. Sourced from Crouch Valley Vineyard and Martins Lane in Essex.
Pinot Noir Rosé - 2018 Vintage: A delightful food-friendly rosé made from 100% Pinot Noir. Rich pink in colour with complex aromas of cherries, rosehip, strawberries and cream, and a palate of redcurrant, cranberry, rhubarb and strawberry with refreshing acidity.

Flint Vineyard

Run by Ben and Hannah, Flint Vineyard was founded in 2007 by a couple who decided to pursue their passion for wine. Ben cultivated his winemaking knowledge by working for prestigious winemakers in France after his degree in Oenology and Viticulture, while Hannah supported the dream. They then moved to Norfolk to begin making wine of their own.

The Flint Blanc de Noir 2016 is a Traditional Method sparkling wine grown partly from Crouch Valley grapes. Whole-bunch pressed and fermented in stainless steel, it was bottled in 2017 and spent two years on yeast lees following secondary fermentation. It received a Silver Medal at the 2019 International Wine Challenge, ranking amongst the best English sparkling wines of the year. Expect a delicate, fine mousse with notes of blackcurrant leaf and a light toasted brioche character from autolysis.

Tillingham

Tillingham is a mixed farm dating from the 13th century, home to vineyards, fruit trees, ancient woodland and livestock. The estate blends progressive scientific and technological knowledge with ancient traditions and millennia of farming wisdom.

Their Tillingham Pinot Blanc is made from Crouch Valley grapes in three equal parts: juice from whole bunches pressed to oak barrel, Qvevri and stainless steel. Bottled by gravity with no filtration, no fining and no added sulphur, the wine has a complex, initially savoury nose that opens up with peach, salinity and a touch of vanilla, with a richer texture than the nose suggests.

Renegade Urban Winery

Some might say an urban winery sounds like a mad idea, but London has long been a centre of innovation, craft, production and quality food and drink. Historically, wine had to be made near the vineyard because grapes wouldn't travel well without refrigerated transport. Renegade Urban Winery is taking full advantage of that fact.

The Renegade 'Sara' 2018 English Chardonnay is a Burgundy-style wine with a touch of butteriness and oak, but with a uniquely English bright tang. Complex and textured with bright acidity, it is sourced from Crouch Valley in Essex.

A Vineyard at the Forefront of an Emerging Region

Beyond its contribution to individual bottles, Crouch Valley Vineyard plays a wider role in the development of the Crouch Valley as a recognised wine region.
