An Essex Vineyard Carved Out of Meadowland Above the Crouch
Martin's Lane Vineyard is a small but ambitious single-estate producer sitting on a remarkable stretch of hillside in the village of Stow Maries, near Maldon in Essex. The 30-acre site occupies south and west facing slopes above the upper reaches of the River Crouch estuary, commanding views across one of the warmest and driest corners of the United Kingdom. It is the combination of those steep slopes, the river's moderating climate and the tides' protective effect against spring frosts that makes the site unusually well suited to classic cool-climate viticulture.
Today the vineyard is run as a partnership, Martin's Lane Estates (Stow Maries) LLP, originally drawn together in 2008 by a small group of families, friends and relatives, the majority of whom still live in the village. Since the first crop in 2012 the partnership has built a reputation for fruit of exceptional quality, much of it supplied in the early years to other English wineries before the decision was taken to bottle under the Martin's Lane own trademark and brand.
History and Founders
The vineyard was the vision of Roy Martin, who in 2008 gathered the founding partnership together to acquire the steep sloping meadowland and trial grape growing for sparkling wine. Roy remained the driving force behind the project for the next fifteen years, championing the vineyard's reputation and, just as importantly, championing the wider Crouch Valley as a serious English wine area. It was Roy who insisted that the wines bear the name of the Crouch Valley, a designation that has appeared on every Martin's Lane bottle since 2013.
Roy Martin died suddenly on Friday 16 June 2023. The partnership's tribute to him records his wider passions beyond viticulture, including horse racing and a deep interest in railways inherited from his father, a lifelong railwayman. The 2022 Pinot Noir Founder's Vintage, a 13% ABV red described by winemaker John Worontschak as "the finest grapes for Pinot Noir he has seen in 40 years of winemaking", was released in his memory on 2 April 2024.
The Winemaker
Martin's Lane's wines are crafted in close collaboration with John Worontschak, one of the most respected figures in English winemaking. The partnership quotes his judgement that the 2022 Pinot Noir Founder's Vintage is the finest Pinot Noir fruit he has worked with in four decades, a tribute to the vineyard's micro-site and to the meticulous husbandry of Roy Martin.
The Site, Climate and Soils
Martin's Lane sits between 20 and 55 metres above sea level on slopes of up to 1 in 6, terrain that has never been ploughed for arable farming except for a brief wartime period in the 1940s. As a result the meadowland has retained a thick organic topsoil above the underlying Essex clay, giving excellent drainage and high natural fertility across the whole hillside.
The vineyard falls within a designated Special Landscape Area and benefits climatically in three distinct ways:
- Aspect: The whole site faces south and west, capturing maximum sunlight on this latitude.
- Rain shadow: Annual rainfall in this corner of Essex is regularly below half a metre, among the lowest in the United Kingdom.
- River moderation: The tidal Crouch estuary buffers the site against spring frosts, the single biggest threat to English viticulture, while the sheltered valley produces some of the warmest summer temperatures in the country.
Planting and Varieties
Planting began in 2010 on a rolling programme designed to give the partnership time to learn the site while diversifying across varieties suited to both still and sparkling styles. Blocks were laid out between the existing native hedgerows and field boundaries, and the early results from each new block were so encouraging that the planting rate was accelerated.
The classic cool-climate varieties now grown at Martin's Lane include:
- Chardonnay - the backbone of the vineyard's Blanc de Blancs sparkling and of its still Chardonnay.
- Pinot Noir - the variety that has defined the site's reputation, used for both still red wines and the Pinot Noir Blanc de Noirs.
- Pinot Meunier - the third traditional Champagne variety, complementing the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir blend.
- Pinot Gris (Grigio) - planted for its suitability to the site's warm, dry microclimate.
- Bacchus - an aromatic variety increasingly associated with English still wines.
- Pinot Noir Précoce - an early-ripening Pinot mutation particularly well suited to this latitude.
From the first crop in 2012 the fruit from these varieties has been of "the very highest quality", with Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris singled out as outstanding performers.
The Wines
The first limited release of single-estate Martin's Lane wines took place in 2016 and the range has grown steadily since. The current portfolio, all bottled under the Crouch Valley designation, spans a traditional method sparkling, a still white Pinot Noir, three still Chardonnays, two Pinot Gris / Grigio wines, and a pair of still Pinot Noirs including the Founder's Vintage.
Sparkling
2017 Chardonnay Blanc de Blancs (13% ABV) - £36.50 per bottle
A traditional method sparkling made entirely from Chardonnay and aged three years on its lees. On the nose it is aromatically expressive with fresh citrus and gently toasted brioche. The palate is finely structured, showing lemon zest, shortbread and toasted nut with a fine persistent mousse and a richly satisfying dry finish. The producer describes it as "unsurpassed as an example of the very finest Blanc de Blancs".
Still Whites and Rosé-Style Whites
2022 Chardonnay (13% ABV) - £36.50 per bottle
A still Chardonnay built around the purity of the grape, showing white flowers and gentle jasmine aromatics supported by fresh lime and peach on the palate. The producer recommends it as an aperitif or paired with fish and white meats, calling it "the epitome of the very best of traditional cool climate Chardonnay".
2022 Pinot Gris (13.5% ABV) - £27.75 per bottle
A finely drawn Pinot Gris with gentle floral character on the nose and a steely, slightly exotic ripe pear fruit on the palate, finishing with excellent length and concentration. The producer describes it as a "vin de gastronomie" suited to red and white meat dishes including game and poultry.
2018 Pinot Noir Blanc de Noirs (12.5% ABV) - £25.50 per bottle
A white wine pressed from fully ripened Pinot Noir grapes, giving red berry aromas of strawberry, raspberry and cherry. The palate is mouthwateringly crisp and refined with subliminal hints of vanillin oak ensuring a long finish. The producer notes it is "already drinking well with further improvement assured for many years to come".
2023 Pinot Grigio (12% ABV) - £27.75 per bottle
The Italianate expression of the Pinot Gris block, pale straw in colour with delicate tropical fruit and a hint of melon on the nose. The palate is rich, spicy and perfectly balanced with a lean, firm and lasting finish reminiscent of the best Northern Italian Pinot Grigio. Recommended with poultry, fish and pasta or as an aperitif.
Still Reds
2022 Pinot Noir Founder's Vintage (13% ABV) - £50.00 per bottle
The flagship wine of the current range and the partnership's tribute to its late founder. Launched on 2 April 2024, the wine is described by winemaker John Worontschak as the finest Pinot Noir fruit he has worked with in 40 years, and is intended to "age well into the next decade". A collector's wine at the top of the price ladder.
2020 Pinot Noir Précoce (13.5% ABV) - £30.50 per bottle
Made from the early-ripening Pinot Noir Précoce clone grown on the warmest blocks of the vineyard. The nose shows bright cherry and blueberry, the palate spice and dried cranberry with great length and intensity. The producer describes it as "a classic and beautifully balanced Pinot Noir that will drink well for many years to come".

The Crouch Valley as a Wine Region
The Crouch Valley, the inland stretch of the River Crouch estuary running roughly from Chelmsford and Maldon out towards the North Sea, has become one of the most talked-about emerging regions for English still wine. Martin's Lane, with its steep slopes, low rainfall and frost-protected river site, has been a flagship for that reputation since the partnership decided in 2013 to attach the Crouch Valley name to every bottle.
