Denbies Wine Estate: England's Largest Single-Estate Vineyard in the Surrey Hills
Nestled on the southern edge of the North Downs and bordered by the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Denbies Wine Estate is England's largest single-estate vineyard. The 265-acre property climbs the chalk hillside above the market town of Dorking, with south-facing slopes that drink in the long summer days and produce grapes for some of the country's most awarded still and sparkling English wines. Visitors do not have to peer over a fence to enjoy the place, either: Denbies is set up as a full wine country destination, with cellar door tastings, a vineyard train, four places to eat, a 17-bedroom Vineyard Hotel, an in-house art gallery and an events programme that runs almost every week of the year.
The Story of Denbies
Denbies was first planted in 1986 on land that had previously been part of a working farm. The chalk soil, gentle slopes and relatively dry microclimate of the lower North Downs turned out to be ideal for classic cool-climate varieties, and over the following decades the estate expanded to become the flagship of English still and sparkling winemaking. Today the vines run in long ribbons up the hillside behind the winery building, with walks threading between the rows and viewpoints that look out across the vines to Box Hill, the Mole Valley and on clear days, the spires of central London.
Alongside its growth as a vineyard, Denbies has been repeatedly recognised for its environmental work. It was the UK's first certified Net Zero vineyard and holds B Corp certification, and was awarded the King's Award for Enterprise for its contribution to sustainable development. The estate's chalk downland is managed for wildflowers, insects and farmland birds, with the vineyard and surrounding chalk grassland forming part of a wider Surrey Hills ecosystem.
The Wines of Denbies
Denbies' cellar door and online shop list more than twenty wines, sparkling wines, vermouths and gift items. The portfolio is split across still whites, reds, rosés, sparkling wines, sweet and fortified styles, plus a small but distinctive range of vermouths and accessories.
