Elham Valley Vineyard: A Kent Charity Vineyard with Soul
Tucked into the rolling countryside of the Elham Valley, a few miles south of Canterbury, sits one of the most quietly remarkable vineyards in England. Elham Valley Vineyard was planted in 1985, making it one of the very earliest vineyards in what is now a thriving Kent wine region, and it has been tended ever since by a most unusual team of horticulturists: the students, staff and volunteers of a small Kent charity called The Fifth Trust.
This is a vineyard with a beating social heart. Every bottle of Elham Valley wine sold online, in the on-site shop, or in the adjoining Vineyard Café, raises money that helps fund The Fifth Trust's work with adults with learning disabilities across East Kent. Visitors are not just buying English wine; they are quietly underwriting skills training, work experience placements, and a daily welcome for more than 170 students.
A vineyard rooted in Kent's wine story
Kent is now recognised as one of the most exciting wine regions in England, but when Elham Valley Vineyard was first planted in 1985, English wine was still very much a curiosity. The vineyard's founders were pioneers; the rows of vines they established that year grew and matured while Kent's broader wine industry was still finding its feet.
New vines were planted across the site in 2011, refreshing the canopy and laying the foundations for the modern, fruit-forward wines the vineyard is now known for. Then, in early 2024, the team planted around 500 new Solaris vines, a hardy, cool-climate hybrid ideally suited to crafting dry white wines. Today the vineyard spans roughly 2,000 vines and forms the centrepiece of a much larger Elham Valley campus that includes the Fifth Trust's Vineyard Skills Centre, the popular Vineyard Garden Centre, and the licensed Vineyard Café.
Hand-tended by students, made just down the road
Every Elham Valley wine begins in the soil of the Estate, where students of The Fifth Trust learn the rhythms of the vine year - pruning, tying down, leaf-pulling and harvesting - alongside the Trust's horticulture instructors. The grapes are then transported less than five miles down the road to neighbouring producer Defined Wine, who vinify and bottle them. The result is a low-impact, low-mileage journey from vine to bottle, and a transparent story The Fifth Trust is proud to share with every customer at the cellar door.
The winemaking style is clean, modern and deliberately food-friendly. Each wine is bottled with a clear sense of place and purpose, from the still Seyval Blanc that opens the range to the traditional-method Sparkling Cuvée that closes it.
The Elham Valley wine range
Still White (Seyval Blanc)
The estate's signature white is built around Seyval Blanc, a grape that thrives in cooler English summers. The nose carries plenty of elderflower, cut grass and green apple, leading into a palate of clean green and citrus fruits - lemon, grapefruit and crisp orchard apple. It is a well-balanced, fresh wine with persistent integrated acidity, ideal as an aperitif or with fish and salads.
Dry White 2025
The 2025 Dry White is a Seyval Blanc / Pinot Noir blend at 11.3% vol, described by the vineyard as delicate, fresh and bright. The blend marries crisp apple and citrus flavours with soft summer-fruit notes, and is best served well chilled. Sold at £15.00 per bottle, £45.00 for a three-bottle selection, and £85.50 for a case of six.
Still Rosé
An elegant, refreshing and radiant rosé made from Seyval Blanc and Pinot Noir. Expect fresh citrus, red fruits, a hint of black cherry and russet apple on a well-balanced, fruit-driven palate. Priced at £17.50 per bottle or £52.50 for a trio.
Seyval Blanc Single Varietal
Pure Seyval Blanc, leaner and more mineral than the Dry White blend, offering a more focused expression of the grape. At £16.50 a bottle, or £49.50 for three.
Blanc de Noirs
A Blanc de Noirs made from Pinot Noir, with a savoury nose of hay set against red fruits and white peach. The palate is broad and weighty, with a gentle, persistent mousse and a very pinotesque character. Available at £29.00 a bottle.
Sparkling Rosé
Soft, delicate and vibrant - a sparkling rosé made for sunshine and long lunches. A summery bouquet of red berries and freshly mown hay carries through onto the palate alongside crisp apple and citrus, with a gentle mousse and a refreshing finish. Made from Seyval Blanc and Pinot Noir. Priced at £29.50 per bottle.
Sparkling Cuvée
The showstopper of the range. The 2024 vintage Sparkling Cuvée is a blend of Chardonnay, Seyval Blanc and Pinot Noir at 12% vol, described as joyful, elegant and lively. It dances on the tongue with green apple, lemon and a hint of pear, and is best served well chilled. The Sparkling Cuvée is available at £25.00 per bottle, £75.00 for three bottles, and £142.50 for a case of six - making it one of the most attractively priced English traditional-method sparklings on the market.

More than a vineyard: the Fifth Trust campus
Elham Valley Vineyard is one of six social enterprises operated by The Fifth Trust, all designed to raise income for the charity while giving students real, supportive work experience. A visit to the vineyard is therefore as much a chance to explore a working community as it is to taste wine.
Vineyard Garden Centre
The adjoining Vineyard Garden Centre is open seven days a week (Monday - Friday 9:00 - 16:30, Saturday 9:00 - 16:00, Sunday 10:00 - 16:00) and stocks a wide selection of top-quality plants, including herbaceous perennials, seasonal bedding, trees, shrubs, vegetable and fruit plants, hanging baskets, and the Trust's own Own Grown range - propagated by students at the Barham Skills Centre. The garden centre also sells logs, tools, ornaments, terracotta and plastic pots, and a hand-picked selection of bird-feeding accessories. The Gift Shack, which sits within the garden centre, is the home of Elham Valley wine and the students' own craft work.

Vineyard Café
Overlooking the vineyard with both indoor and outdoor seating, the licensed Vineyard Café serves breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea using homegrown and locally sourced produce. Students of The Fifth Trust work alongside staff in the kitchen, at the till and front of house, building valuable life and employment skills. The café is open Monday - Saturday 9:00 - 16:00 and Sunday 10:00 - 16:00. It won Outstanding Service of the Year at the Kent Life Food & Drink Awards 2025. The Gift Shack
The on-site gift shop is a boutique of student-made craft. Here you'll find unique woodwork (cutting boards, decorative items, bird boxes), painted canvases, ceramics, seasonal gifts, greeting cards, chutneys and jams - many of which are also available online. Stocking the shelves and serving customers is part of the Trust's Work Experience programme.
Vineyard Logs
A separate social enterprise, Vineyard Logs, supplies kiln-dried firewood across East Kent with free stacking included. Visiting the vineyard
The vineyard sits just off the Elham Valley Road in the hamlet of Breach, near Barham, with easy access from Canterbury and Folkestone. Visitors are invited to stroll along the garden walkway that winds through the rows of about 2,000 vines, before continuing on to the café, garden centre, and gift shop. The Vineyard Skills Centre, which opened in 1996, also serves as the Trust's head office, and several creative and practical activity sessions run on the site throughout the week, including horticulture, art, design and print, photography, woodwork, pottery, cook club, music and performing arts, and work experience placements.
Vineyard Tours
The vineyard offers tours of the site, including the vine rows and the wider social-enterprise campus. Bookings and pricing are handled through the main office.
Corporate Volunteer Days - "A Day Among the Vines"
One of the most distinctive ways to experience the vineyard is through The Fifth Trust's corporate volunteer day, branded A Day Among the Vines. Teams of up to 15 spend a full day in the vineyard and log barn, learning to tie down and prune the vines, then helping process firewood before finishing with a tasting of Elham Valley wines. The day runs from around 09:00 to 16:00, includes a buffet lunch from the café, and is fully risk-assessed. Pricing is bespoke and arranged on application.
Events and what's on
The Fifth Trust runs a small, well-curated programme of events throughout the year. Forthcoming gatherings include:
- Sip. Paint. Pot - Thursday 14 August 2026, 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm. A relaxed evening combining wine, painting and pottery, hosted at the vineyard. Bookings can be made through the event booking page.

Friends of The Fifth Trust members receive priority booking and early-bird discounts on gatherings such as Elham Valley Vineyard wine tastings. The Friends scheme is currently under review, but existing memberships remain valid until their expiry date.
The wider story of The Fifth Trust
The Fifth Trust was set up in 1990 to provide educational, vocational and recreational activities for adults with learning disabilities. It was founded by a group of East Kent families who had already created five supportive homes in the area, and who wanted to make sure residents had access to the facilities and professional care they needed to live as independently as possible.
Today the Trust offers more than 20 different activities to around 170 students a week, across two sites: the Elham Valley Vineyard Skills Centre and the Barham Skills Centre. Sessions range from art, design and print to cook club, craft, horticulture, music, photography, pottery, sports, woodwork, multi-skills, and outdoor active learning in local woodland. Students can attend between one and five days a week, and programmes are fully personalised through a person-centred planning approach.
The Trust's main social enterprises - the Vineyard Garden Centre, the Vineyard Café, Vineyard Logs, and the Elham Valley Vineyard - all generate surplus income that funds student services. Every wine bottle, garden plant, scone and bag of logs sold is a contribution to that mission.

Sustainability and community
The Fifth Trust is committed to minimising its environmental impact. The vineyard's own winemaking is deliberately low-impact, with grapes travelling less than five miles to the winery. Around the broader campus, the Trust uses local suppliers, reuses materials where it can, and runs upcycling projects with corporate partners. A 2024 collaboration with Eurotunnel, for example, saw Craft students transform donated uniforms and PPE into tote bags, mobile phone carriers and lanyards. The Trust is also fundraising to build an Outdoor Active Hub - a fully accessible Tipi and pathway at the Barham Skills Centre - to extend its outdoor learning provision year-round.

The full wine range is available to buy directly from the Fifth Trust online shop. Single bottles start at £15.00 for the Dry White, with three-bottle selections and six-bottle cases available across the range. The Sparkling Cuvée case of six is priced at £142.50, offering strong value for an English traditional-method sparkling. All wines are sold through an age-verified checkout.
Bottles can also be purchased in person at The Gift Shack inside the Vineyard Garden Centre, where students' woodwork, pottery, art, preserves and greetings cards are stocked alongside the wines. The Gift Shack also appears at local craft fairs and the Trust's popular annual Christmas craft fair, held on the first Saturday in December.
