Froginwell Vineyard - Devon Wedding, Corporate & Private Venue near Exeter

Nestled in the rolling East Devon countryside just a few miles from Exeter, Froginwell Vineyard is one of the South West's most distinctive celebration venues. Set across 20 acres of meadow, apple orchard and hand-planted vines, the property is anchored by a beautifully restored red-roofed Cider Barn that has hosted weddings, corporate events and milestone private parties for more than a decade. The site is family-run by Connie, Ali and their team, and the relaxed, hands-on approach is part of what makes the venue such a favourite with couples, businesses and families looking for a flexible countryside setting with a difference.

Location and Setting

Froginwell Vineyard sits on the outskirts of Woodbury Salterton, around seven miles from Exeter city centre and just five minutes from Junction 30 of the M5. The A30, Exeter Airport and the A38 are all within easy reach, making it a simple journey for guests travelling from across the South West and beyond. The address is Froginwell Vineyard and Cider Barn, Woodbury Salterton, Exeter, Devon, EX5 1EP.

The estate itself is the kind of Devon view that stops you in your tracks. Rolling hills, wildflower meadows, an acre of vines on a gentle slope and a productive apple orchard frame the Cider Barn. The terrace is shaded by festoon lighting and wisteria in summer, and an open log fire keeps things cosy once the sun goes down. The whole site feels a million miles from the city while remaining only a short drive from Exeter's hotels and transport links.

A Brief History

Froginwell opened its doors on 12 May 2012, initially as an agricultural barn-turned-café selling the estate's own wine and cider. The owners quickly discovered that visitors were asking the now-famous question, “It’s so lovely here - do you do weddings?” - and the business gradually shifted towards exclusive private event hire. The café closed in late 2017 so the team could build a 100-square-metre oak-framed extension, taking the venue from a single-phase to a three-phase electrical supply and transforming it into the bright, airy celebration space it is today.

A decade after opening, the team marked their 10-year anniversary by raising a glass to the venue and reflecting on a journey that has included a global pandemic, a complete change of direction, and a string of upgrades that have turned the barn into one of Devon's most sought-after celebration spaces. In 2019, the venue was also awarded Best Venue by the 373 Group at Escot House, recognition from the wider Devon business community.

The Cider Barn and Vineyard

The Cider Barn is the heart of the venue. Its high-vaulted ceilings, exposed oak beams, arched windows and original brickwork give the space real character, while the open-plan layout makes it easy to transform for any style of celebration - rustic, bohemian, modern or classically elegant. Natural light floods in through the large arched windows, offering views across the orchard, terrace and vineyard beyond.

Outside, the oak-framed decked terrace, sloping lawn and surrounding 20 acres provide endless space for drinks receptions, lawn games, festival-style celebrations or quiet moments between ceremony and wedding breakfast. The vines themselves form a natural race track that children (and grown-ups) love, and the orchard provides a beautifully secluded corner for photography. The venue is also dog-friendly, with a fully enclosed back lawn and terrace meaning four-legged guests can roam safely.

Weddings at Froginwell

Weddings are the headline act at Froginwell. The venue hosts weddings all year round, with the peak season typically running from 1 April to 30 September, although winter and midweek weddings are becoming increasingly popular thanks to their relaxed feel and greater date flexibility. Couples have exclusive use of the entire property - the barn, vineyard, orchard and grounds - and the team never books more than one event at a time.

Wedding Capacities and Layouts

The Cider Barn comfortably seats 120 guests for a wedding breakfast, with the option to extend to 160 - 200 guests for evening celebrations, dancing and live music. The high ceilings and open layout mean the top table can keep an eye on every guest, and the central American-style bar creates a natural flow between mingling, dining and dancing. A glittering disco ball is included as standard.

Ceremony Options

Couples can choose to marry in one of Devon's beautiful churches and travel to Froginwell for the reception, or hold the entire day on site. On-site ceremonies can take place inside the barn under the oak beams, on the decked terrace, or beneath the brand-new pergola overlooking the vines. A fully licensed bar serves a wide selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks throughout the day.

Why Couples Choose Froginwell

  • Exclusive use of the entire venue, with set-up allowed the day before
  • No corkage-style add-ons: fire pits, on-site ceremonies and camping are all included at no extra cost
  • High-quality audio and visual equipment for slideshows, videos and speeches
  • Free Wi-Fi and ample free parking in the private car park
  • A free clear-down service - the team takes down decorations after the festivities
  • Trusted local food and drink suppliers, with couples welcome to bring their own caterers
  • Dogs welcome
  • Direct contact with wedding coordinators Connie and Ali throughout planning

DIY and Flexible Weddings

One of the things that sets Froginwell apart is its DIY-friendly ethos. Couples are encouraged to bring their own decorations, furniture, signage and personal touches to make the space truly their own. Past couples have recreated favourite movie scenes, draped fairy lights and garlands around the beams, and laid out photo timelines around the room. The barn's neutral palette works with everything from macramé-and-wildflower boho styling to sleek modern minimalism, and the team's wedding planners share practical tips for DIY weddings on the FrogBlog.

Midweek and Winter Weddings

For couples open to an off-peak celebration, Devon weekday weddings offer full exclusive access at a more accessible price point. Devon winter weddings bring the bonus of mulled wine, candlelit tables, mistletoe and a cosier atmosphere - plus far more date availability than the busy summer months.

2027 Wedding Offers

The team is currently promoting offers of up to £1,000 off selected 2027 weekend wedding dates.

Corporate Events and Conferences

Froginwell is also a popular venue for corporate events, from full-day conferences and team away-days to product launches, training sessions, client hospitality and Christmas parties. The venue is just five minutes from Junction 30 of the M5 and offers easy access from Exeter city centre, Exeter Airport and the A38.

Conference Facilities

The conference spaces can be set up in cabaret, theatre or boardroom style, depending on the group's needs, and the mezzanine floor seats up to 30 guests for board meetings and smaller training sessions. The light, airy barn downstairs seats 120 guests formally and up to 160 for less formal gatherings. The team will work with you before arrival to make sure the room is set up exactly as you need it.

Summer 2026 Conferences

For Summer 2026, the team is offering tailored conference packages including guided vineyard tours, grape-to-glass tasting sessions and facilitated team-building activities among the vines. The Summer 2026 brochure highlights sustainable event options, hybrid access for remote delegates, and partnerships with nearby boutique hotels and B&Bs for overnight stays.

Private Parties and Celebrations

Froginwell's flexible approach also makes it ideal for private event hire: milestone birthdays, anniversaries, christenings, wakes, proms, balls and family reunions. The barn seats 120 for dining and accommodates 200 standing for larger parties, with a high-vaulted dance floor, fully licensed bar and on-site parking.

External caterers are welcome, and the team can recommend trusted local suppliers for everything from grazing tables and food trucks to formal sit-down dinners. Children and dogs are welcome, and the sloping lawn and meadows give parents peace of mind while the little ones run off their post-dinner energy.

Christmas Parties

Each December, the Cider Barn transforms into a winter wonderland for Christmas parties. Twinkling fairy lights, crackling log fires and rustic festive décor set the scene for corporate celebrations, family gatherings or friends' get-togethers. Bespoke festive packages can include traditional three-course Christmas dinners, festive buffets, mulled wine, canapés, live music and dancing. Dates in December fill up fast.

On-Site Wine and Cider

Froginwell produces its own small-batch English wine and cider on the estate, originally selling both from the barn when the venue first opened. Today, the on-site licensed bar pours the vineyard's wines alongside a curated selection of local alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, giving weddings, parties and corporate guests the chance to toast with something grown a few steps from the bar. The team's blog regularly charts what's happening in the vineyard, from bud break and blossom to harvest.

Wedding Fayres and Events Calendar

The team hosts an annual Wedding Fayre at the vineyard, bringing together local Devon florists, photographers, caterers, stylists and décor specialists. The 2026 Wedding Fair was held on 14 March from 10am - 3pm, and the 2027 date is expected to be announced in due course. The event is free to attend and is a popular starting point for newly engaged couples exploring Devon barn wedding venues.

For corporate clients planning a year-end celebration, past corporate events hosted at the vineyard have included the NatWest Boost Summer Bash for 160 guests, LinkedIn Local breakfast networking and team away-days for firms such as Michelmores and Charles Stanley Wealth Management.

Accommodation Nearby

While the venue itself does not offer on-site accommodation, two beautiful options sit within a stone's throw of the vineyard, plus Exeter city centre is only a 5-minute drive away.

  • Sanctuary Sleeps - OhSo Lodge and Pods (Fox, Swallow and Hare) on the same 20-acre estate, ideal for the bridal party or honeymoon night
  • Brooklands Farm Cottages - three quirky, characterful cottages (Garden View, Owls and Poppies) set around a 500-year-old farmhouse, each with its own private hot tub
  • Hotels in Exeter for guests who want to stay in the city

Testimonials

Couples consistently praise the warm, personal involvement of Connie and Ali. Lydia & James said the team was “nothing but helpful and professional” from first enquiry to final clear-up. Sara & Aaron described the venue as “simply one of the best wedding venues the South West has to offer”, while Jade & Johnny booked their wedding with just six months' notice and praised the team's “constant contact” throughout the run-up. K&G chose Froginwell for a wedding vow renewal and called it “a truly magical” experience with “attention to detail second to none”.

Viewings, Bookings and Brochures

The team can be reached by phone (01395 239900) or email (info@froginwellvineyard.co.uk) to arrange a viewing. A live availability calendar and downloadable brochures cover weddings, Christmas parties and corporate events.

Sustainability and Local Sourcing

The team is committed to keeping Froginwell's footprint as light as possible. Plastic straws and confetti are banned, waste goes to zero-to-landfill disposal, and as many trees and plants as the budget allows are planted around the estate. There's an ambition to introduce beehives in the orchard and turn roughly five acres of fields into wildflower meadow. Food and drink are sourced from trusted Devon suppliers wherever possible, and both Dani and Kate cycle to work on a 100% renewable energy tariff.
