Frome Valley Vineyard: A Family-Run Herefordshire Estate Crafting Award-Winning English Wines

A family story rooted in the modern English wine revival
The story of Frome Valley Vineyard begins, as so many small English wine estates do, with a leap of faith. The current owners took over the vineyard in 2005. At the time, they were, in their own words, "total viticultural novices". The vines had been planted some fifteen years earlier by their predecessors, right at the very start of the modern English wine revival. Faced with the choice of grubbing the vineyard up or carrying on, they chose the harder and more rewarding route. The more they learned about vine growing and winemaking, the more fascinating the young industry became, and the vineyard became, in time, a new way of life for the whole family.
As the family's experience and knowledge of viticulture grew, so did the family itself. From mowing the vineyard rows to manning the stalls at country fairs and leading visitors round the winery, "everyone is finally old enough to pitch in". That ethos of shared, hands-on stewardship remains at the heart of Frome Valley Vineyard today. Terroir: why Herefordshire matters
Frome Valley Vineyard occupies a particularly sheltered pocket of the English countryside. The site is tucked into a curve of the River Frome, and the vines benefit from a sheltered microclimate that makes this corner of Herefordshire unusually well-suited to viticulture. The soils are clay loam, and it is the interplay between this soil, the river's moderating influence and the rolling topography that shapes the character of the estate's award-winning wines.
At latitude 52 degrees north, Bishops Frome sits on the edge of what has traditionally been considered viable for grape growing in the UK. Climate change is shifting those boundaries. The vineyard notes that destructive late frosts in May, once a serious worry, are now far less common, but increasingly dry summers are proving challenging for younger, less well-established vines. The estate has had to adapt, replacing vines that have not survived the mixture of droughts and waterlogging of recent seasons and ordering new planting stock to be put in the ground in April each year.
Beyond the vineyard itself, the wider estate tells the same story. The cider orchard is entirely organic (although not formally registered as such), a large created pond provides a haven for wildlife, and a considerable proportion of the land is laid down to permanent pasture and woodland, quietly sequestering carbon year after year.
Sustainability: how the grapes are grown
Looking after the land has always been at the heart of what Frome Valley Vineyard does. The estate was among the first small vineyards to sign up to the WineGB Sustainability Project, an industry-wide initiative that aims to ensure the whole UK wine world, from vine to bottle, is as sustainable as possible. The vineyard is now also part of the Countryside Stewardship scheme, designed to encourage environmentally useful practices on working land.
In the vineyard itself, the team works as lightly as possible. All pruning, both winter and summer, is done by hand, as is the harvest. Between the rows, the team experiments with different mulches to suppress weeds and promote vine health, and they are engaged in a Sustainable Wine GB study into the effects of incorporating biochar into the soil. Their small flock of Wiltshire Horn sheep is a defining feature of the estate: in winter the sheep "mow" the vineyard and fertilise it at the same time, and their wool is later used as mulch under the rows. The flock eat the grass they evolved with, so emit vanishingly little carbon, and the pastures themselves receive no other added fertilisers.
Across the rest of the property, the same principles apply. All heating is biomass and the photovoltaic solar panels contribute to the UK's renewable energy total. LED lighting is used throughout, with motion-sensitive lighting where appropriate. The vegetable garden makes the family almost self-sufficient in fruit and vegetables, and the sheep make the occasional contribution to the freezer. New hedgerows have been planted and damaged ones laid in the traditional West Midlands manner, providing local employment, and the team maintains around two-thirds of a mile of river bank through judicious coppicing and replanting to the benefit of local wildlife.
The wines
Frome Valley Vineyard's range is built around the cool-climate varieties that thrive on this Herefordshire clay loam. The current cellar includes traditional method sparkling, aromatic and still whites, a delicate red, and an award-winning English brandy. All of the wines are made from estate-grown fruit and are available to buy directly from the winery, either in person or via the online shop with UK mainland delivery.
Paunton Sparkling 2015
The estate's headline fizz is a traditional method sparkling wine made from a blend of Pinot Noir and Seyval Blanc. Biscuity, dry and foamy, it is the wine that the family are most proud of, and it forms the centrepiece of several gift sets. Prices run from £25 through £140 depending on format. Bacchus 2022

Madeleine Angevine 2022
Known affectionately as "Mad Ange" at the vineyard, Madeleine Angevine has an elderflower nose and a creamy finish. It is excellent as an aperitif and pairs well with salads, white meats and fish. Reichensteiner 2019

Huxelrebe 2017

Pinot Noir 2022
A delicate, sumptuous red made in the English style rather than chasing the relentless sunshine of the south of France. "Our Pinot Noir is a delicious mouthful of summer fruits," the family notes. Paunton Medium Dry 2017
Built around Huxelrebe and Reichensteiner, with a touch of Bacchus to round it out, the Paunton Medium Dry is the estate's everyday "good quaffing wine". English Brandy
The estate's English brandy is distilled in a copper, wood-fuelled still from occasional vintages. As the family explains, "we are quite marginal here, weather-wise, and when we do not have enough grapes to make our full range of wines, we make a whole-vineyard brandy". Tours and tastings
Frome Valley Vineyard is best experienced in person. The estate runs guided tours and tastings seasonally from April to the end of September, each lasting approximately one to two hours and welcoming groups of up to 20 people. Tickets are £30 per person, with free on-site parking. Children and dogs are welcome, and the estate is wheelchair accessible, although visitors should note that there is no disabled loo due to the listed buildings. Non-drinkers are very welcome, with the estate's own apple juices offered as an alternative to the wine flight. The ticket price is the same for all guests, regardless of whether they are tasting or not.
The tour
The visit begins with a welcome at the winery, where the family introduces the vineyard and the wines it produces. The tour then moves into the demonstration vineyard, where the team talks through the grape varieties grown on the estate and explains how the vines are trained, pruned and managed through the seasons. The demonstration vineyard showcases a selection of trellising methods and grape varieties from around the world, so by the end of the walk guests can tell their "single guyot" from their "geneva double curtain". From there, the walk continues on to the main vineyard, around 200 metres across a grass field, where the conversation turns to how local soil, weather and seasonal conditions shape vine growth and, ultimately, the style of the wine in the bottle. Along the way, the family shares the practical realities of growing grapes in Herefordshire and how each year shapes the harvest.
The tasting
The tour is followed by a relaxed, tutored tasting of the current range of still and sparkling wines. There is plenty of time to ask questions and to talk through the different styles, flavours and characteristics of each wine. Whether guests are completely new to English wine or already familiar with the estate's range, the tasting is tailored to the group and offers a chance to explore what they enjoy most. At the end of the tasting, favourites can be purchased directly from the winery to take home or give as a gift.
Group bookings, hen dos and corporate visits
The estate welcomes group bookings for family celebrations, business fun evenings, hen dos and other larger gatherings. Group bookings require a 50% deposit to secure the date, with full payment due six weeks in advance of the visit. The deposit is refundable if the booking is cancelled before the full payment is due, but not thereafter. Booking terms
All tours and tastings must be booked in advance. If a booking needs to be rescheduled, the family asks for at least seven days' notice and will happily move the visit to an alternative date, subject to availability. For cancellations, the estate requires 14 days' notice for a refund; cancellations made with less notice, and non-attendance, are not refundable.
The vineyard shop
The Frome Valley Vineyard shop brings the estate's full range to a wider audience. Orders are normally despatched within two working days, with standard UK mainland delivery priced at £15.00 and an allowance of five working days for delivery. (The estate is currently unable to ship to Northern Ireland due to new export rules.) All prices are quoted in pounds sterling, and may be per bottle or per case as marked. Wine is sold only to customers aged 18 or over.
Mixed cases
Two mixed cases make it easy to explore the full range in one go. The Mixed Case of Wine at £85 includes six bottles, one of each still wine: Bacchus, Pinot Noir, Reichensteiner, Madeleine Angevine, Huxelrebe and the Medium Dry. The Mixed Case of Wine and Sparkling at £109 adds a bottle of the 2015 Paunton Sparkling to the same line-up, for seven bottles in total. According to the family, each case "encapsulates our vineyard in one case and gives you the full range of flavours that characterise the varieties of grape we grow".
Gift sets and gift vouchers
For special occasions, the estate has put together a small, considered gift range. The Fizz and Glasses Gift Set at £44 pairs a bottle of the estate's fizz with two champagne glasses in a reusable, magnetically closing three-panelled box. The Wine and Spirits Gift Set, also £44, brings together a bottle of the sparkling wine, a 5cl bottle of the English brandy and a 5cl bottle of British Cassis, complete with a recipe for a kir royal as an aperitif and the brandy as a digestif. Finally, the Tour and Tasting Gift Voucher at £32 gives the recipient the chance to visit the vineyard in person and taste the award-winning wines in the winery itself.

In a recent update from the estate, the family share that, between the rain and wind, the vineyard is "pretty frosty at the moment". The Wiltshire Horn sheep are still out mowing and fertilising the rows, and their wool will be used as mulch under the vines a little later in the year - a perfect example of the circular viticulture the estate has championed for two decades.
