Radlow Hundred: Award-Winning English Still Wines from a Herefordshire Farming Family

A Family Vineyard Rooted in Eight Generations of Herefordshire Farming

Radlow Hundred is the wine-making arm of a Herefordshire farming family that has worked the same rolling landscape for eight generations. The estate sits within the area once known as the Radlow Hundred, an administrative district recorded in the Domesday Book, and the wines are bottled as a small, heartfelt nod to the family's farmscape, its history and its surrounding community.

Founded and directed by Susan Vaughan, the project grew out of a clear ambition: diversify the family farm in a way that would protect it for future generations while staying true to the British farming tradition that has shaped the land for centuries. As Susan often says, her grandfather would never have imagined vines being planted in England. Yet here, in the heart of Herefordshire, those vines have thrived, and the wines they produce are now winning awards at home and abroad.

Every bottle of Radlow Hundred is small-batch, hand-tended and crafted to reflect the best of the local terroir. The labels tell stories of the area too, from the warm summers of village cricket to riverside days along the River Wye. Pour a glass and you are tasting not just English wine but a long thread of rural heritage.

How the Vines Are Grown

The vineyard is run by grower Rob Hancocks, who pairs grape varieties to the soil with meticulous care. Two grapes were chosen to anchor the range: Rondo, a hardy red variety well suited to the British climate, and Solaris, an aromatic white variety bred for cooler northern latitudes. From the very first year of planting, the vines produced fruit of such quality that the family felt compelled to share it.

The vineyard calendar moves with the seasons. In winter, pruning is done by hand to set the canopy for the year ahead. Spring brings careful training of new growth along the rows. Summer is the favourite time of year on the farm: bees awaken to pollinate the cover crops, the team constantly weed and trim the canopy to let sunlight reach the bunches, and the grapes slowly ripen through warm English days. Late summer and early autumn bring the harvest, the focal point of any English vineyard's year, before the cycle begins again.

This patient, year-round stewardship is what allows Radlow Hundred to bottle wines with real freshness, balance and sense of place. The Herefordshire climate, with its cool nights and long summer days, gives the grapes both natural acidity and aromatic ripeness, ideal conditions for the still wines the family has chosen to specialise in.

The Radlow Hundred Wine Range

While many English vineyards focus on sparkling wine, Radlow Hundred has deliberately put its energy into still wines. The current collection revolves around three single-varietal wines, complemented by a trio of curated gift and mixed-case options.

Radlow Hundred Rondo 2023 - Award-Winning English Red

The flagship of the range is the Radlow Hundred Rondo 2023, priced from £25.00 per 75cl bottle. Rondo is a single-varietal medium-bodied red made entirely from carefully grown grapes on the Herefordshire estate, vinified to showcase vibrant English berry fruit alongside soft tannins and gentle oak influence.

The 2023 vintage has been a remarkable year for this wine. Rondo 2023 has been awarded Silver at the IWSC (International Wine & Spirit Competition), Silver at the International English Wine Awards, and Silver at the WineGB Awards, a clean sweep that confirms its place among the most decorated English reds on the market. The IWSC judges described it as having "a perfumed nose of cranberries, dark cherries and violet; vibrantly juicy revealing ripe blackberry and cola sweetness, with subtle vanilla oak; balanced tannins, textured and harmonious with a lingering finish."

On the palate, expect delicate hints of vanilla, dark cherries and damson, ruby-red in the glass, with dark currants and a whisper of pepper lifting the cherry character. A gentle oaked edge and light tannins bring the wine to a smooth, elegant finish. At 12% ABV and best served at 14 - 16°C, Rondo pairs beautifully with roast lamb or beef, charcuterie boards, rich pasta dishes, mature cheeses and grilled mushrooms. If you usually enjoy Pinot Noir, Beaujolais or lighter-bodied Merlot, Rondo is an obvious English red to try.

Radlow Hundred Rosé 2023 - Award-Winning English Rosé

The Radlow Hundred Rosé 2023 is the winery's bestselling wine, also priced from £25.00 per 75cl bottle. Awarded Bronze at the WineGB 2026 Awards, this is a fresh, vibrant and beautifully balanced dry English rosé bursting with notes of summer berries, delicate blossom and refreshing citrus freshness.

Delicate aromas of strawberries, raspberries and soft floral notes lead into a crisp, refreshing palate layered with juicy red berry fruit and subtle citrus character. Bright acidity and a smooth finish make this an effortlessly drinkable English rosé for warm afternoons, outdoor dining and sharing with friends. At 11% ABV and best served at 8 - 10°C, it is a perfect match for summer salads, grilled seafood, charcuterie boards, Mediterranean dishes, light pasta dishes and any sunny evening in the garden. Fans of Provence Rosé or Pinot Grigio Blush will find it immediately familiar.

Radlow Hundred Solaris 2023 - Crisp English White

The Radlow Hundred Solaris 2023, again from £25.00 per 75cl bottle, is a crisp, aromatic and beautifully refreshing dry English white wine with delicate floral aromas, fresh orchard fruit and a smooth, balanced finish. Solaris is a variety particularly well suited to the cooler British climate, producing wines with bright natural acidity and aromatic lift.

Expect fresh aromas of citrus blossom, green apple and stone fruit leading into a crisp palate layered with zesty lemon, ripe pear and subtle tropical fruit character. Bright acidity and a clean finish make Solaris a wonderfully easy-drinking English white for sunny afternoons, light dining and relaxed evenings with friends. At 11% ABV, served best at 8 - 10°C, it pairs naturally with grilled seafood, summer salads, chicken dishes, soft cheeses and light pasta. If Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio is your usual style, Solaris is well worth exploring.

Why Choose Radlow Hundred?

Three things set Radlow Hundred apart from many English vineyards.

Rooted in Herefordshire

For generations the family has farmed the Herefordshire countryside, and that agricultural heritage continues through the vineyard today. The carefully selected grape varieties have been chosen specifically to thrive in the unique growing conditions of the local landscape, and every bottle carries the character of the land that produced it.

The Home of English Red Wine

While many English vineyards focus on sparkling production, Radlow Hundred is passionately committed to producing outstanding still wines, in particular its award-winning Rondo. The triple-Silver-medal recognition at the IWSC, International English Wine Awards and WineGB Awards has helped put English red wine firmly on the map, and the team is determined to keep pushing that story forward.

Award-Winning Quality

Recognition from competitions such as the IWSC, the International English Wine Awards and WineGB reflects the quality and character of every wine in the range. From the perfumed berry fruit of Rondo to the delicate citrus of Solaris and the summer-fresh Rosé, each bottle showcases the exciting potential of English still wine.

Serving Suggestions and Food Pairings

The team at Radlow Hundred has spent considerable time thinking about how each wine performs at the table, and a few simple serving tips can really elevate the experience.

Rondo works best at 14 - 16°C, lightly chilled if you are serving it outdoors or on a warm day. In fact, lightly chilled English red is one of the year's most surprising trends, and around 20 - 30 minutes in the fridge is all Rondo needs to show a fresher, more fruit-forward character that suits BBQs, pizza nights, burgers and cheese boards. Pair with roast lamb or beef, charcuterie boards, rich pasta dishes, mature cheeses or grilled mushrooms.

Rosé 2023 is best served well chilled at 8 - 10°C and is the perfect picnic companion. Match it with summer salads, grilled seafood, charcuterie boards, Mediterranean dishes and light pasta dishes, or simply enjoy it outdoors in the sunshine.

Solaris 2023 should be chilled for a couple of hours before serving and enjoyed straight from the fridge. It is an obvious partner for grilled seafood, summer salads, chicken dishes, soft cheeses and light pasta, and a natural fit for the Wimbledon season alongside fresh smoked salmon, seasonal salads and strawberries with cream.
