House Coren: Bold British Sparkling Wine from the Heart of West Sussex
Nestled in the rolling countryside of West Sussex near Horsham, House Coren is a family-run English sparkling wine brand that has been quietly redefining how Britain drinks fizz. Founded in 2019 by William Coren and his family, the producer is on a mission to get more people enjoying exceptional sparkling wine crafted in England, vibrant, fruit-forward, premium quality and refreshingly unpretentious. Their debut release, Boco, set the tone; the 2022 addition of Boco Rosé broadened the range; and the team are already teasing still vintages from the 2025 harvest, due to be unveiled in 2026, with a traditional method sparkling wine earmarked for 2029.
What sets House Coren apart from many of its English counterparts is a willingness to do things differently. While most UK fizz is produced in the classic bottle-fermented style of Champagne, House Coren has embraced the Charmat method, a modern, tank-based second fermentation that locks in freshness, fruit and a particularly bright, modern character. It is the same technique behind Italy's beloved Prosecco, and House Coren sits among a very select few UK producers embracing it. The result is a sparkling wine that is bold, easy to love and ready to enjoy sooner than you might expect, without sacrificing the finesse of a premium pour.
The story behind House Coren
House Coren describes itself as a family-run wine brand and négociant, working with handpicked grapes grown across West Sussex to produce its Boco range. The venture began in 2019 with a single sparkling wine. From the outset, the philosophy has been refreshingly simple: "Make the wines we love, and trust others will love them too." Every bottle is crafted to be bold yet accessible, rooted in tradition but never afraid to break the mould.
The team cares deeply about provenance and quality, but equally about keeping wine inclusive, fun and full of possibility. In the team's own words: "House Coren is changing the conversation around English wine. Join us on the journey, one glass at a time." The growth of the business has been steady and considered, with Boco Rosé arriving in 2022, and the still vintages and traditional method wines on the horizon point to a confident, evolving cellar.
Why West Sussex?
West Sussex is the sunniest county in the UK, and rising average annual temperatures are helping with the grape ripening issues that historically held back English viticulture. Reliable rainfall means little to no risk of drought, and the South Downs provide a snug shelter from harsh Atlantic winds. Major French Champagne houses have already moved in, purchasing land locally to grow their own English sparkling, which is a strong endorsement of the terroir.
The maritime climate here gives grapes the perfect balance of vibrant acidity and freshness, the very qualities that make English sparkling wines stand out. House Coren is now growing all the hero varieties used in Champagne, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, and intends to make a traditional method sparkling wine from these estate vines in 2029.
Understanding the Charmat method
The Charmat method, also known as the tank method, is one of the secrets behind House Coren's fruit-forward Boco. The five-step process is straightforward but precise:
- Grape selection: handpicked grapes grown in West Sussex, including celebrated varieties such as Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay.
- Primary fermentation: the grapes are gently pressed, and the juice is fermented into a still base wine.
- Second fermentation in tank: the base wine is transferred to a pressurised stainless steel tank, where sugar and yeast are added.
- The bubbles happen: pressure creates carbon dioxide, and the wine becomes sparkling.
- Bottling: the sparkling wine is bottled under pressure, locking in freshness and flavour.
From base wine to bottle, the Charmat method typically takes around four to six weeks, far quicker than the traditional method, which can involve years of lees ageing. The trade-off is a bold, fruit-driven character with smooth bubbles and a modern, refreshing finish. In the producer's own words: "It's great for toasts, celebrations and evenings shared with friends and family."
The Boco collection
House Coren's flagship range is built around Boco, a Charmat-method sparkling wine that is described as "bold, bright, easy to love and perfect for every occasion. No dress code, no pretence, just outstanding quality made in West Sussex." Both the white and the rosé are available in a variety of formats, from single bottles through to mixed cases and gift hampers.
Boco (white)
The debut Boco is a blend of 29% Chardonnay and 71% Pinot Noir, drawn from top-quality grapes grown in England. In the glass it shows an iridescent pale-white-peach hue with ultra-fine bubbles; on the nose, ripe pear and stone fruit with crisp citrus; on the palate, peaches, ripe pears, a hint of raspberry and a long, clean, citrus and green-apple finish. At 12% ABV, it pairs especially well with shellfish, charcuterie, canapés and pizza, and works nicely as an aperitif on its own.
- Boco House Coren 75cl Bottle (2022 vintage) - £26.00
- Boco House Coren Triple Pack (2022 vintage) - £78.00
- Boco House Coren Case of 6 (2022 vintage) - £148.20 (5% case discount applied)
Boco Rosé
Released in 2022, Boco Rosé is a 100% Pinot Noir Charmat-method sparkling, designed to be bright, playful and every bit as memorable as the original. It pours a delicate blushing pink with pleasant bubbles; the nose offers fresh strawberry and raspberry with a hint of pear and citrus; the palate bursts with fragrant raspberry and strawberry notes, a touch of peach and a fresh, floral finish. At 11.5% ABV, it pairs particularly well with grilled chicken, Mediterranean dishes, seafood and summery salads.

Reading the bottle: a quick House Coren guide to English wine labels
House Coren has put together a quick guide to reading English wine labels. Look for the brand or geographical indicator, the producer name, the region (here, West Sussex), the grape varieties (Chardonnay and Pinot Noir for Boco; 100% Pinot Noir for Boco Rosé), the vintage (Boco's 2022 vintage is currently in release) and the ABV (12% for Boco white, 11.5% for Boco Rosé). It is a handy framework whether you are navigating a shop shelf or a wine list.
What's next for House Coren
Looking ahead, House Coren is balancing innovation with patience. Two still vintages from the 2025 harvest are due to be unveiled in 2026, opening a new chapter for the collection. A traditional method sparkling wine made on estate vines of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier in West Sussex is pencilled in for 2029. Given the quality already showing in the Charmat range, it is an exciting prospect.
