Roebuck Estates: Award-Winning English Sparkling Wine from the Heart of West Sussex

The Roebuck Story

Nestled in the rolling countryside of West Sussex, close to the picturesque market town of Petworth, Roebuck Estates was founded by two friends united by a shared passion for great wine and a single, ambitious vision: to craft exceptional vintage English sparkling wines every single year that could be enjoyed all over the world. To achieve that goal they knew they would have to grow the very best grapes from the finest vineyard sites in England, and in 2013 they purchased their first parcel of land in West Sussex. Roebuck Estates was born.

The name of the estate pays tribute to the wild roe deer often seen roaming the surrounding hills. Like the roe deer itself, the team aims to leave only the lightest footprint on the landscape they cherish. That sense of stewardship of land, fruit and place runs through every part of the business, from the carefully chosen clones in the ground to the recyclable plant-based foils that finish each bottle.

Since their debut release in 2019, the estate's vintage sparkling wines have collected trophies and medals in some of the most prestigious wine competitions in the world and are poured in some of the finest restaurants across the UK and beyond. Jancis Robinson has described Roebuck as "a producer that stands out from the crowd", a quote the team wears lightly but proudly.

Six Vineyards Across the South East

Roebuck Estates farms six parcels of land spread across the picture-perfect landscapes of West Sussex, East Sussex and Kent, each chosen for its soil, aspect and microclimate. Together they are divided into seventy individual blocks of vines, every one planted with its own combination of clone and rootstock to match the terroir. Using a sophisticated software system called Sectormentor, the viticulture team tracks the performance of each block through the season to make precise, block-by-block decisions.

Roebuck - Petworth, West Sussex

The home vineyard sits close to the village of Tillington, west of Petworth, with magnificent southerly views over the South Downs. It is home to the estate's oldest vines, planted back in 2006, and grows the classic Champenois trio - Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. The greensand soils lend elegance and finesse, while the south-facing slopes capture maximum sunlight throughout the day.

Roman Villa - Bignor, West Sussex

Nestled in a serene valley south-east of Petworth, the Roman Villa vineyard covers just under fifteen acres of exclusively Pinot Noir, planted in 2007. South-facing gentle slopes are protected by the South Downs, and the loam and clay-rich soils give great structure and depth to the wines.

Little Brockhurst - Lurgashall, West Sussex

Sited just outside the picture-postcard village of Lurgashall in the foothills of Black Down, Little Brockhurst lies in a natural amphitheatre. Planted in 2014 on flint, clay and sandy soils, the seventeen acres of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier benefit from abundant summer sunshine to produce fruit of remarkable complexity.

Waterlands - Slinfold, West Sussex

Planted in 2017 just north of the village of Slinfold, Waterlands is planted with the classic Champenois trio. Its aspect, gradient and south-facing slopes create ideal conditions for sparkling wine grapes, adding texture, depth and richness to the blends.

Hazelhurst - Ticehurst, East Sussex

Overlooking Bewl Water reservoir in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Hazelhurst is the largest of the estate's vineyards at just over forty acres of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, planted across eight distinct blocks. Heat-retaining sandstone soils and multi-aspect slopes give great richness and complexity to the final blends.

Chalkhill Blue - Bilting, Kent

The most recently established site, named after the beautiful Chalkhill Blue butterfly native to the area, has thirty-five acres on the finest chalk soils with incredible south-facing slopes and excellent drainage. Still maturing, this Kent parcel shows huge potential for the next generation of Roebuck wines.

The Craft of Vintage Sparkling Wine

Crafting exceptional vintage sparkling wines lies at the heart of everything Roebuck does. The team's philosophy is to work hand in hand with nature and to produce wonderfully individual wines that are a generous expression of the growing season in which they were made.

Hand-harvested fruit

Individual bunches are picked by hand to preserve the integrity of the fruit, then gently whole-bunch pressed at the winery, yielding only the highest quality juice.

Vintage only

Every Roebuck sparkling wine is vintage only - produced from the harvest of a single year. The wines are crafted from a harmonious blend of the classic Champenois varieties and made according to the traditional method.

Respect for tradition

Each vineyard block is vinified separately, giving the winemakers a multitude of components to work with when blending. A small proportion of the wines are partially fermented in fine, aged Burgundian oak barrels to impart complexity, depth and texture to the final blends.

Art of blending

Blending is one of the most important stages of the winemaking calendar. Each parcel is assessed for quality, aromatics and distinctive character before being assembled. Pinot Noir brings structure and texture, Chardonnay contributes elegance, acidity and aromatics, while Pinot Meunier fills in the gaps with floral and perfumed notes.

Aged to perfection

Crafting exceptional vintage sparkling wines requires time and patience. The wines are aged on lees in bottle for a minimum of three years, followed by significant time on cork before release, allowing complexity and balance to develop slowly.

Sustainability at the Core

Roebuck Estates is a founder member of the Sustainable Wines of Great Britain (SWGB) certification scheme, recognising the viticulture team's unwavering commitment to environmentally responsible practices.

It all begins with the soil

The team has made a conscious choice to reduce herbicides and minimise the use of pesticides in vineyard management, nurturing a harmonious relationship with the land.

A haven of biodiversity

The estate has introduced beehives, bird houses, insect hotels and reptile habitats, planted wildflower meadows and welcomes a flock of sheep during winter. Every measure is designed to support the ecosystem that sustains the vineyards and the surrounding environment.

Sustainable packaging

Bottle neck foils are made from plant-based polyethylene derived from sugar cane and printed using water-based ink. Wine boxes are fully recyclable and the estate works only with suppliers who share the same environmental ethos.

The Vintage Collection

The Vintage Collection is the everyday face of Roebuck Estates - elegant, food-friendly English sparkling wines that are made only in the very best years. Every bottle is hand-picked, whole-bunch pressed and aged on lees for a minimum of three years.

Classic Cuvée 2020

An elegant blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, the Classic Cuvée 2020 displays notes of baked apples and ripe citrus fruits layered with a biscuity richness and a delicious hint of sweet spice. Pale golden and refined, it is an ideal companion to seafood. From £38.

Rosé de Noirs 2020

Crafted from carefully selected, hand-picked Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier grapes with a splash of Pinot Précoce added at disgorgement to enhance the rose-pink hue, the Rosé de Noirs 2020 shows wild strawberries, ripe red berries and a hint of toasted walnut, balanced by vibrant acidity. From £42.

Blanc de Noirs 2018

Made only in exceptional years, the Blanc de Noirs 2018 is a 100% Pinot Noir wine from the Roman Villa vineyard. Notes of citrus fruits and baked apples are layered with toasted brioche, honey and sweet spice. From £50.

Blanc de Blancs 2019

The latest release from the estate, the Blanc de Blancs 2019 is produced exclusively from hand-harvested Chardonnay grown in West Sussex. Following partial fermentation in old Burgundian oak and more than five years on lees, it reveals ripe citrus, stone fruits, white flowers and toasted hazelnut with a long, beautifully balanced finish. From £50.

Rosé Reserve 2019

The Rosé Reserve 2019 shows vibrant notes of raspberries and apricot, layered with subtle hints of toasted hazelnut. It was recently awarded an outstanding 96 points at the International Wine Challenge, earning both a Gold Medal and the prestigious English Sparkling Rosé Trophy in 2025. From £35.

Rare Expressions

The Rare Expressions range is a special collection of limited-edition vintage sparkling wines that showcase the finest expression of a particular place, grape variety or moment in time. Fruit is selected from a distinct site, often a single clone, and allowed to evolve slowly - typically over seven to eight years on lees. The result is a wine with layered texture, structural poise and a quiet, resonant complexity.

Rare Expressions No.19

From the 2015 vintage and made from fruit grown at the Roman Villa vineyard, Rare Expressions No.19 bears the hallmark of the Roebuck style: structure, depth of flavour and layers of complexity. Ripe peach, baked apples and honeysuckle are layered with hints of toasted almonds. From £95.

Rare Expressions No.96

Defined by time and careful bottle ageing, Rare Expressions No.96 reveals a deeper, more evolved expression of the Roebuck style. Deep golden in colour, it is rich yet beautifully balanced, with notes of baked apples, honey and a biscuity richness layered with toasted walnuts and candied citrus peel. From £95.
