Tinwood Estate: A Family-Run Sussex Vineyard Producing Award-Winning English Sparkling Wines
Perched on the edge of the South Downs National Park just north of Chichester, Tinwood Estate has quietly become one of England’s most compelling sparkling-wine destinations. Family-owned since 1985 and planted to vines in 2007, the single-estate vineyard produces traditional-method English sparkling wines from the three classic Champagne grape varieties and welcomes visitors seven days a week, all year round. From a guided stroll through the vines and a tasting of three award-winning wines to a luxury overnight stay in a wooden lodge above the rows, Tinwood is a fully working vineyard that doubles as a hospitality experience - and a lively calendar of seasonal events keeps the gates turning through every season.
The Tukker Family Story
Tinwood’s story begins with a field of iceberg lettuce. In 1985, Dutch farmer Aad Tukker bought a 275-acre farm at Halnaker, a tiny hamlet north of Chichester, to grow salad crops. Two decades later, his son Art Tukker was looking for a new challenge. “This great story started with salad,” Art says. Taking over the family farm in 2006, he converted the first 28 acres to vines in 2007, planting Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier on the chalky, flint-studded soils. The first Tinwood sparkling wine was opened in 2011 in the kitchen of Art’s sister Janine, and the Tukker family’s pivot from leaves to luxury was complete.
Today the vineyard has expanded to more than 110 acres of vines, with around 300 to 400 tonnes of grapes harvested by hand each season. The estate is run by second-generation owners Art and Jody Tukker, with Janine van Nieuwkerk leading the trade side of the business. Inside the wider 200-acre family farm, guests will find not only the vines but also beehives, walking trails, and an unrivalled view of the Sussex countryside.
Terroir, Soil and Sussex PDO Status
Tinwood sits just three miles from the coast, with south-facing vines at the foot of the South Downs. The microclimate produced by the hills gives the vineyard plenty of sunlight and natural protection from frost - both important when growing on the northern edge of the European wine map. The top layer of soil is a fertile mix of loam, gravel and flint, with chalk sitting 50 - 300 cm below the surface - conditions that draw direct comparisons with parts of Champagne and Burgundy. In 2022 Sussex was awarded Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status, becoming the first and only official PDO region for wines in the UK, and Tinwood is one of the region’s flag-bearers.
The Wines
Tinwood only makes sparkling wine, and only from estate-grown, hand-harvested fruit. The 2025 harvest, the estate’s earliest and second-largest to date, brought in 280 tonnes of grapes - 160 tonnes of Chardonnay, 68 tonnes of Pinot Noir and 52 tonnes of Pinot Meunier - enough to produce approximately 225,000 bottles for the 2026 vintage. The wines are made in partnership with Ridgeview Wine Estate in Ditchling, and the estate range comprises four elegant sparkling wines alongside personalised and gift editions:
- Blanc de Blancs 2023 (100% Chardonnay) - £33. A delicate pale gold with silvery highlights; green apple and white tropical fruit on the palate with a clean, lingering finish. Recommended with smoked salmon, scallops, oysters and light canapés.
- Estate Brut 2023 (50% Chardonnay, 30% Pinot Noir, 20% Pinot Meunier) - £33. Pale gold with a lovely mousse and a fine bead of bubbles; aromas of citrus and melon with hints of toast and honey. Pairs well with charcuterie, porchetta, lobster and roast turkey.
- Rosé 2023 (Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier with a touch of Chardonnay) - £35. A stunning salmon hue with abundant bubbles; English raspberry and strawberry with finesse from the Chardonnay. Serve with stilton and honey, dark chocolate or berry-based desserts.
- Blanc de Noir 2018 Limited Edition (100% Pinot Noir) - £45. A white sparkling wine made from red grapes, with delicate hints of toasty biscuit and blackcurrant and a balanced richness. A true limited release.
- Blanc de Blancs 2018 Magnum - £85. 1.5L bottle-aged in Tinwood’s cellars, presented in a luxury black and gold leaf presentation gift box.
Personalised bottles of the Blanc de Blancs, Brut, Rosé and Blanc de Noir are also available through the online shop, as is the Tinwood Collection Gift Set of three favourite sparkling wines in a presentation gift box for £111. Standard UK delivery is £8 and is free on orders of six bottles or more.
Vineyard Tours & Wine Tasting
The flagship Tinwood experience, and the one that gets the most enthusiastic reviews, is the Vineyard Tour & Wine Tasting at £21 per person. Hosted daily, each tour begins with a guided walk through the vines led by a knowledgeable host, who explains the journey from grape to glass, the seasonal rhythms of the vineyard (pruning in winter, budburst in spring, veraison in summer, harvest in autumn), and the traditional method used to make English sparkling wine. The second half takes place in the Tasting Room or on the deck overlooking the vineyard, where guests taste three of Tinwood’s award-winning wines and learn about aromas, flavours and food pairings. The whole experience lasts 1.5 hours; guests are invited to stay on afterwards for an extra glass or a bottle from the bar.
Tours are dog-friendly and wheelchair-friendly, with a picnic bench next to the tour area for guests who would prefer to sit. Light bites from the Vineyard Kitchen - breads, cheese, charcuterie, arancini and seasonal small plates - can be ordered on the day to accompany the tasting. Mocktails are available for non-drinkers, including an Elderflower Spritz, an Appletini Tonic and a Raspberry & Hibiscus Fizz, each designed to echo the flavour profile of one of the wines.
Bookings can be made up to two days in advance; cancellations within 48 hours incur a 100% charge. Lodge guests receive 20% off the tour when booked at the same time as their stay, bringing the price to £16.80 per person.
Sparkling Afternoon Tea
For something more indulgent, the Sparkling Afternoon Tea Tour is held most Wednesdays at 3 pm. Guests arrive from 2:45 pm for unlimited tea and coffee, take a short guided tour of the vines at 3 pm, then settle into the Tasting Room for the afternoon tea itself - a selection of finger sandwiches, warm scones, cakes and homemade sweet treats - served alongside three glasses of Tinwood sparkling wine. Gluten-free and vegetarian diets can be accommodated with 48 hours’ notice; unfortunately vegan and dairy-free options are not available. Pricing is £49 per person. The afternoon tea is also available as a gift voucher.
The Vineyard Kitchen
Opened in 2023, the Vineyard Kitchen is the casual, walk-in heart of the estate. Open daily from 9:00 am to 5:30 pm, the kitchen operates on a modern British tapas concept, with seasonal small plates designed to pair and share with the wines. The menu rotates through the year and is built around fresh, local and sustainable ingredients. Highlights from the sample menu include:
- Breads, dips & olives: homemade focaccia (£3), sundried tomato tapenade (£5), mixed olives, capers and sundried tomatoes (£8).
- Cheese: Black Bomber cheddar (£13), Colston Bassett Stilton (£13), Sussex Brie (£11), Tinwood Mixed Cheese board (£16).
- Starters (paired with the Blanc de Blancs): hot smoked mackerel pâté (£10), marinated anchovies (£5), salmon roulade (£12), celeriac and chive remoulade (£8), whipped goat’s cheese (£5).
- Mains (paired with the Brut): chicken teriyaki (£9), free-range pork sausage roll (£9), arancini (£9), croquettes (£9), salt cod fishcakes (£12), coronation chicken salad (£8), harissa-spiced couscous (£9), pesto pasta salad (£8).

- Coffee & cakes: blueberry and almond cupcake (£5), banana bread (£5), Tinwood flapjack (£5).
Wine is served by the glass at £8, or as a flight of three for £22. The Blanc de Noir is not available by the glass. Sharing Boards for six or more guests can be pre-ordered with at least five days’ notice. The kitchen is also dog-friendly, with plenty of gluten-free and vegan options, and a Picnic in the Vines option lets guests borrow a picnic blanket and head out into the rows with a hamper of seasonal dishes. There is no need to book a table; simply turn up and you will be found a spot on the terrace or in the dining area.
Luxury Vineyard Lodges
Eight raised wooden lodges sit on the edge of the vines, built to give guests the ultimate view over the top of the rows and towards the setting sun. The first three opened in 2016, and five more were added in April 2024, bringing the total to eight. Each lodge is appointed to a high standard, with double bi-fold doors opening onto a private decked terrace, a super king-sized bed dressed in Egyptian cotton, a double jacuzzi bath, two-person walk-in shower, bathroom robes, a flat-screen TV, a Nespresso machine, complimentary Wi-Fi, daily housekeeping and a wine fridge stocked with bottles available to purchase. There are also two outdoor barrel saunas on the estate, and mountain bikes are available for guests to use.
Lodge stays include a continental breakfast hamper delivered to the door at 9 am: fresh orange juice, homemade granola, yogurt, berry compote, fruit salad, warm croissants, toast and hard-boiled eggs. Check-in is between 2 pm and 6 pm, and check-out is at 10 am (late check-out at 12 pm is available for £20). Lodge prices start at £235 a night on the published 2026 booking calendar, with a sample product listing showing the Tinwood Lodge at £285 per night.
Dinner Hampers
For evenings when guests would rather not leave their lodge, Dinner Hampers deliver a chef-made three-course meal for two straight to the door at 6 pm for £85. The menu is fully seasonal, rotating roughly every three months: spring brings confit chicken and ham hock terrine, Moroccan-style lamb tagine and treacle tart; summer features oak-smoked salmon with marinated white crab followed by beef Wellington and a strawberry mousse; autumn turns to chicken liver parfait, beef bourguignon and a chocolate cheesecake with winterberry jam; and winter keeps things warm with bruschetta, a Tinwood take on a winter roast and a panna cotta or chocolate torte. Vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free menus are available with at least 48 hours’ notice.
