Trentham Estate, Staffordshire: A Complete Guide to the Gardens, Shopping Village and Year-Round Events
The Trentham Estate is one of the most-visited days-out destinations in the West Midlands, drawing more than 3.6 million visitors in 2024 across its 725 acres of restored historic parkland, woodland and lake in north Staffordshire. Trentham is a multi-award-winning leisure estate encompassing award-winning gardens, an open-air shopping village, family adventure play, a wildlife-rich lake, a wedding and corporate venue and one of the largest event calendars in the region.
About the Trentham Estate
Trentham sits in the heart of Staffordshire, just one mile from junction 15 of the M6 and the A500. It is owned by Blackstone and operated by Multi-Realm, a leading leisure destination management firm, and was once home to the Dukes of Sutherland for more than 400 years. Since 2003 the estate has undergone a £100 million regeneration, restoring listed gardens and historic parkland, planting 10,000 native trees and introducing a wide range of visitor attractions.
Trentham has collected a string of accolades. It was named Large Visitor Attraction of the Year by Enjoy Staffordshire in 2022, received a Resilience and Innovation award for its community support during the COVID-19 pandemic, was recognised as Green Space of the Year at the 2021 iTravel Staycation Awards, and in 2025 picked up gold for its Beaver Safari Experience and silver in the Large Visitor Attraction category alongside a Highly Commended for Accessible & Inclusive Tourism.
Looking ahead, Trentham has embarked on a significant new chapter of garden redevelopment in collaboration with acclaimed landscape designer Tom Stuart-Smith, further enhancing its reputation as a leading horticultural destination.
History of the Gardens
Originally a priory site, Trentham moved into private ownership after the Dissolution of the Monasteries. The first hall was built in 1599 on the priory ruins and replaced in 1633 by Richard Leveson with an Elizabethan mansion. Some of the largest yew trees in the Italian and Eastern Pleasure gardens today date from that era.
The 18th-century landscape was shaped by Charles Bridgeman and then by Lancelot "Capability" Brown, who was engaged by Granville, 2nd Lord Gower, in 1759. Brown swept away the formal parterres of the earlier pleasure garden, replacing them with the mile-long serpentine lake, Brownian mounds, sweeping gravelled walks and the woodland plantings that still define the estate.
George Granville, 2nd Duke of Sutherland, engaged Sir Charles Barry in 1833 to redesign the hall and gardens in the Italian Renaissance style then fashionable across Europe. Terraced garden rooms, balustrading, clipped topiary, classical sculptures and the seven fountains still in the Italian Gardens today are all part of Barry's work. Head gardener George Fleming, appointed in 1841, added the celebrated Ribbon Bedding displays and designed the 100-metre rose-clad Trellis Walk.
The Duke's hall was demolished in 1912, but the gardens opened to the public in 1910, gaining motor launches, rowing boats and a miniature railway over the following decade. After passing through the National Coal Board in 1984, the estate was acquired by St Modwen in 1996, then by Blackstone, and reopened in its modern form in 2004 following extensive restoration.
The Italian Gardens
Set within Sir Charles Barry's original 19th-century framework, the Italian Gardens are the centrepiece of the estate. At the head of the gardens stands a 19th-century bronze copy of Cellini's Perseus with the Head of Medusa, commissioned by the 2nd Duke of Sutherland - one of the largest free-standing sculptures in the UK when made.
Piet Oudolf's two 120-metre-long perennial borders flank the central walk, planted with salvias, echinacea, phlox and ornamental grasses. Seven fountains, fed directly from Trentham Lake, dominate the garden's central space; the largest measure 10 metres in diameter with jets reaching up to 7 metres.
The Trellis Walk, originally laid out in 1847 by George Fleming and restored during the 2004 regeneration, stretches roughly 100 metres and links the Italian Gardens, the David Austin Rose Border and the Eastern Pleasure Grounds. A statue of Hygieia, goddess of health, marks its northern end.
A new chapter for the Italian Garden is underway in partnership with Tom Stuart-Smith. Over the next few years the entire garden is being replanted with resilient, long-lived perennials suited to changing climate conditions. Phase 1 saw 12,000 plants delivered to the estate in late September 2025, with planting completed by autumn. Highlights in the Upper Beds include Amsonia 'Ernst Pagels', Baptisia 'Purple Smoke', Bergenia 'Silberlicht' and Crambe maritima, while the Lower Beds feature Vernonia lettermannii, Miscanthus sinensis 'Graziella', Euphorbia donii and Rudbeckia subtomentosa 'Henry Eilers'.
The David Austin Rose Border
Planted in November 2024 in partnership with David Austin Roses as part of the Next Chapter Project, the 100-metre David Austin Rose Border runs along the Trellis Walk. It has been designed to celebrate the beauty, fragrance and performance of English Roses within a contemporary garden setting, with carefully selected varieties chosen for repeat flowering, health and reliability. The palette of pink and white roses is complemented by herbaceous planting and seasonal bulbs, supporting pollinators throughout the year.
The Lakeside and Capability Brown's Lake
The mile-long lake at the heart of Trentham was laid out by Lancelot Brown in the 18th century. Professor Nigel Dunnett of the University of Sheffield has been working with Trentham since 2016 to develop horticultural interest and ecological value along the lakeside walk, including the woodland meadows, sunny meadows, Hazel and Oxlip Meadow and the new Otters Meadow planted in 2025.
The circular lakeside walk offers ever-changing views, abundant wildlife and places to pause. Since 2023, Eurasian beavers have been reintroduced within a dedicated 182-acre enclosure around the lake. Two hides - the Kingfisher Hide and the Otter area - provide quiet spots for observation, while the Bluebell Meadow project continues to extend wildflower plantings.
A new North Jetty Wildlife Garden opened in 2026, housing the Tip Toe Trail and the Junior Kart Track, alongside interpretation and planting designed to connect families with lakeside wildlife.
Rivers of Grass and Floral Labyrinth
Designed by Piet Oudolf in 2004, the Rivers of Grass and Floral Labyrinth remain two of the most photographed features at Trentham. The Rivers of Grass create a sense of intimacy through broad sweeps of grasses punctuated with herbaceous perennials. The Floral Labyrinth weaves through 30 individual beds of bold colour and scent, set among historic trees including ancient yews, a tulip tree and a Cappadocian maple with the largest girth in the British Isles, with the Cedar of Lebanon providing a dramatic backdrop.
Woodlands, Wildlife and the Eurasian Beavers
Trentham is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Habitats include heathland, water meadow, lowland meadow, woodland pasture and the lakeside itself. The River Trent, its brooks, water meadows, lake and four islands attract over 50 bird species throughout the year, including a heronry of 42 breeding pairs, resident kingfishers and dippers, native waterfowl and a breeding family of Black Swans. All three native woodpecker species can be heard in the woodlands alongside summer migrants such as spotted and pied flycatchers and redstarts.
Five bat species have been recorded on the estate, alongside Red Fox, Eurasian Otter, Badger, Hedgehog, Weasel, Stoat and three species of deer. Harvest mouse and yellow-necked mouse both breed here. The March 2023 reintroduction of a family of three Eurasian beavers from Scotland has already begun to transform the lakeside environment, opening up views across the water and creating richer wetland habitat.
Trentham Monkey Forest
Set within 60 acres of ancient woodland at the south of the estate, Trentham Monkey Forest is home to 140 free-roaming Barbary macaques. Visitors walk along a three-quarter-mile pathway that runs directly through the monkeys' habitat, observing their natural behaviour. A large primate-themed adventure play area sits alongside the walk. Tickets and opening times are managed separately through monkey-forest.com. Holders of full-price Standard Day Tickets for either Trentham Gardens or Monkey Forest receive 20% off at the other attraction within seven days.
Adventure and Play
The Adventure Playground at Trentham is built around natural-play equipment and is included in gardens admission. Highlights include the Altitude Tower, climbing wall, agility course, swings (including the Queen of Swings), Viking Rope Swing, Whirlwind Roundabout and twin zip lines running alongside the famous Barefoot Walk.
The Toddler Zone offers a giant sand play area, three adventure boats (one wheelchair-accessible), a sand play activity tower, large diggers, willow dens and tunnels, plus nest swings, seesaws and baby swings. The Young Drivers Zone, designed for under-5s, lets children steer and navigate mini vehicles along gentle paths.
The Barefoot Walk is a sensory trail of mud, grass, bark and pebbles, with shoe lockers and foot showers at the end. The Hide and Speak Maze features talking pipes, flowering meadows and a Treasure Chest viewpoint. The Quiet Garden, tucked behind the Adventure Playground in the Show Gardens, has been designed for neurodiverse children and their families, with gentle sensory play, a quiet swing and soothing planting.
Outdoor soft play for ages 2 - 5 operates seasonally, and the new Junior Kart Track on the North Jetty (new for 2026) offers a purpose-built driving experience for children. Wildlife finger mazes add a further hands-on element.
The Trentham Fairies and Fairy Quest
Trentham's fairies are the work of FantasyWire artist Robin Wight. The original Fairy Trail was launched in 2014 to celebrate the tenth anniversary of Trentham's reopening and was reimagined in 2024 for the launch of Fairy Quest. Titania, the "Queen of the Fairies", points the way from the shopping village. A separate sculpture, Beyond Ithaka, was commissioned in honour of NHS Organ Donation and offers a peaceful space for reflection.

Set among characterful timber lodges, the open-air Trentham Shopping Village hosts more than 80 stores mixing high-street brands with independent retailers, plus cafés and restaurants. Shopping Village opening hours are 10am - 5:30pm from 1 April to 31 December 2026, and 10am - 5pm from 1 January to 31 March 2027. On Sundays some stores close at 4pm excluding dining outlets.
Trentham Garden Centre
The Blue Diamond Trentham Garden Centre sits at the heart of the estate and offers a huge range of indoor and outdoor living products alongside Caffé Bello and the Six Arches Restaurant, which seats more than 250 covers in the footprint of the old Trentham Hall Conservatory. Terrazzo del Giardino serves Italian dishes on a sun-terrace overlooking the Italian Gardens.

Dining options across the estate include the Italian Garden Tearoom (home-made and locally sourced food), the Tearoom Kiosk, Lakeside Café, Six Arches Restaurant, Terrazzo del Giardino, Caffé Bello, Cadwaladers ice cream, PAU Café, Capabilitea, Willow by Parogon (with 3 tapas for £17 on Fridays), Anasma Greek Eatery, Pieminister, Frankie & Benny's, Rotisserie, Simmer & Slice, Quba & Co, the Trentham Craft Bar and the Premier Inn restaurant. Day ticket prices for Trentham Gardens during the Summer Savings window (25 June - 1 September 2026) are:

Visitors who book online at least 48 hours in advance receive an automatic 15% discount and fast-track entry. An accessible adult or child can bring one carer free with a paying guest.
For groups, the Group Gardens Day Ticket is priced at £10 for adults, seniors, students and disabled visitors plus companion, £6 for children aged 3 - 15, with drivers and group organisers admitted free. Coach drivers receive a complimentary £5 food-and-drink voucher valid in participating outlets. Educational programmes are available year-round for Key Stage 1 and 2 groups, with self-led programmes from £6 per student off-peak and £6.50 per student in peak months, and ranger-led programmes from £8 to £8.50 per student. Membership
Three membership tiers are available. Standard Adult is £73 per year with gardens access seven days a week and discounts at participating outlets. Gold Adult is £70 per year (or £75 without auto-renew) and represents the best-value tier with the same seven-day access. Platinum Adult is £300 per year and adds 24-hour daily access to the gardens and lake walks, plus a complimentary Discovery Cruise and Safari Tour and private access-gate entry.
Family memberships are available from £130 in the Standard tier, with child memberships from £25 and concessions for seniors and students. Dogs can also be signed up for membership - Gold dog membership is £70 with auto-renew (or £75 without) or £73 Standard, with free human access included.

Trentham offers several bookable tours and wildlife experiences:
- Guided Bus Tour of Trentham Gardens - a 90-minute journey around the gardens with one of the horticulture team, including a complimentary Trentham Guidebook.
- Dusk Beaver Safari - 7pm - 9:30pm, £39.50 per person for adults and children over 8 (Platinum and Gold members £35.55). Includes gardens admission. Sturdy footwear is recommended.
- Weekend Beaver Safari - £45 per person (adults and children aged 8+); £40.50 for Platinum and Gold members.
- Trentham Lake Discovery Cruise - 11am - 12pm on selected dates, £7 per person including standard members, £5.60 for Platinum and Gold members.
- Trentham Lake Boat Cruise on Miss Elizabeth - the 42-seat wheelchair-accessible electric catamaran runs on weekends and selected dates until 6 September.
- Fairy Quest - a year-round self-guided trail of all 21 fairies, included with admission.
- Disc Golf - a year-round 9-hole course in the woodlands.

Trentham Live 2026
Trentham Live is the estate's flagship open-air concert series, returning for 2026 with four nights of live music. Gates open with live music beginning at approximately 6pm, with concerts finishing between 10pm and 10:30pm. Tier 1 ticket prices are:

Weddings at Trentham
Trentham is a regional winner of The Wedding Industry Awards (West Midlands Venue of the Year 2023). Wedding packages include exclusive use of the historic Loggia in the heart of the Italian Gardens, elegant Chiavari chairs for the ceremony, a private marquee for up to 150 guests, a semi-private Upper Flower Garden drinks reception, one year of standard Trentham membership for the couple, private entrance and parking for guests, full garden admission on the day and access to the wider gardens for photography.
Spring and summer weddings can use the marquee or an outdoor setting (couples may also bring their own tipi or marquee). Autumn and winter weddings use a glass-fronted venue overlooking the lake with space for up to 90 guests. Catering options include bespoke menus, halal, kosher and other dietary requirements, with afternoon tea and outdoor BBQs also available. Corporate and Private Hire
The Kingfisher Suite, alongside the River Trent in the heart of the shopping village, is available for meetings, training sessions and private dining. Capacities include Boardroom 12, Classroom 8, Theatre 18, Cabaret 8 and Dining 16. Room hire starts at £175 plus VAT and includes exclusive use from 8:30am - 5:30pm, tea, coffee, water, a TV screen, flipchart and pens, plus complimentary on-site parking. Larger corporate events can use the wider estate, with team-building, conferences, exhibitions, graduations, product launches, seminars and trade shows all supported. Corporate partners include KDM Events and Totally Delicious. The estate also hosts special events, fairs and private parties.
Photoshoots and Filming
The 725-acre estate is regularly used for engagement, family and pet shoots at a chargeable rate. Wedding-day and pre-wedding/engagement shoots in formal or bridal attire are reserved exclusively for couples marrying at Trentham. Bookings are made by emailing weddings@trentham.co.uk. Commercial filming enquiries are also directed to the team.
Accessibility
Trentham offers a free essential companion ticket to accessible adults and children with appropriate documentation (DLA, PIP, Carer's Allowance, ESA, Blue Badge, BD8/CVI or Credibility Access Card). All routes from the car parks, shopping village and Visitor Centre are wheelchair accessible. Free wheelchair hire is available at the Visitor Centre on a first-come, first-served basis, and the Miss Elizabeth boat is fully accessible. The Italian Gardens and lakeside walks are also accessible to wheelchairs and mobility scooters. Mobility scooters can be hired between 9am and 4pm at £20 per day (or £15 for Trentham members).

Trentham is in north Staffordshire, just one mile from junction 15 of the M6 and the A500. Sat-nav postcode is ST4 8JG. Parking is free all year round, with the two main car parks located near the Garden Centre and next to the Shopping Village. First Bus service 101 runs from Hanley and Stafford to the "Trentham Gardens" stop, and Stoke-on-Trent is the nearest mainline railway station. Cycle parking is available behind the Cornerstone Jewellers unit.
Garden tickets, event tickets and memberships can be pre-booked through the Trentham ticketing portal, with a 15% discount available to those booking at least 48 hours ahead.

Trentham with Dogs
Dogs are welcome in the gardens and shopping village, except during certain event days and evenings, and are permitted in many of the shops, cafés and restaurants. Dogs must be kept on a short 2-metre lead at all times. There is a designated off-lead area heading up towards North Park for dogs to stretch their legs. Dogs are not allowed in the Blue Diamond Garden Centre, and dogs classified under the Dangerous Dogs Act are not permitted anywhere on the estate. Assistance dogs are warmly welcomed across all shops, cafés and restaurants.
