A family estate rooted in Wiltshire
Whitehall Garden Centres is a fourth-generation family business, founded in 1970 by Mrs Phyllis Self on the land her family had farmed for over a century. What began as a simple passion for the outdoors and a desire to serve the local Lacock community has grown into one of the South West's top destination garden centres. The Self family still runs the business today, and the farm's livestock and arable land sit alongside both the garden centre itself and the vines that now produce the Whitehall Vineyard range.
The wines themselves are described on the label as having been "delicately handcrafted using only the best grapes picked from our Vineyard," and every bottle carries the unmistakable provenance of a small English estate: limited yields, named plots, vintage dating and a clear sense of place.

Whitehall Madeline May Chardonnay 2021
Made from 100% Chardonnay and blended from a small batch of grapes precisely picked for the highest quality, this is a well-balanced, complex wine with notes of citrus and stone fruits, a medium body and a long, refreshing finish. It pairs well with fish and pasta, and was the most decorated wine in the cellar: Silver at the Wines of Great Britain Wessex Awards 2022, Bronze at the Wines of Great Britain West Awards 2022 and Best Non-Dry White at the West Awards 2022. Whitehall Bella Rosa 2021
Bella Rosa is described as "our take on a classic Provence-style rosé but with a beautiful English twist," gently caressing the mouth with every drop. It is crisp and dry on the nose, leaving a delicious fruity sensation on the palate. Made only from the very best Pinot Meunier grapes from the vineyard, it is positioned as the perfect wine for relaxing afternoons and weighs in at 11% ABV. Whitehall Lady of the Valley 2021
A full-bodied rosé blended from Bacchus and Rondo grapes, Lady of the Valley is an easy-drinking style with an "incredible burst of fruits on the palate." It is suited to light salads or sipping in the sun, and won Bronze at the Wines of Great Britain Wessex Awards 2022. At 11.5% ABV it is the most accessible bottle in the range at from £5.99.
Whitehall Bacchus 2022
The flagship white of the current release, Bacchus 2022 is 100% Bacchus at 12% ABV and the only wine in the line-up with a single, fixed online price rather than a "from" structure. On the nose it shows nettle and elderflower, with delicate herbaceous flavours and green apple on the palate; an elegant balance of acidity leads to a long finish. It pairs with white meat, pasta or can be enjoyed on its own, best served chilled. The bottle is priced at £14.99 (regular price £16.99, currently on offer at 12% off).
Vineyard style and provenance
The tasting notes and awards confirm several hallmarks of modern English still-wine production. Grapes are hand-picked in October (the harvest dates on the back labels read "Oct-21" across the 2021 vintage), yields are modest and every parcel is hand-selected. Whites are produced in a crisp, aromatic register - Chardonnay for body and citrus, Bacchus and Pinot Gris for elderflower, nettle and stone-fruit lift - while the two rosés showcase two very different grapes: the bright, red-fruited Pinot Meunier of Bella Rosa and the deeper, fuller Bacchus-Rondo blend of Lady of the Valley. Visiting the vineyard at Whitehall Garden Centre
Because the vines sit within the wider Whitehall Garden Centre estate at Lacock, visiting the vineyard is naturally combined with a trip to one of the South West's most respected garden destinations. The centre is on the A350 Corsham Road, just outside the National Trust village of Lacock and only a few miles from Chippenham. There is free parking on site, the centre is wheelchair accessible, and visitors can also take advantage of free Wi-Fi, a carry-to-car service and the on-site restaurants.
Two eateries make a vineyard visit easy to turn into a full day out. The Herb Garden Restaurant is the family-style spot for hot drinks, cake or a home-cooked lunch (children's meals and lunch boxes are served), open Monday to Saturday 9:00am to 4:30pm and Sunday 10:00am to 4:00pm. Lavender Lodge Tea Room & Bistro offers a more intimate setting for breakfast, lunch or cake, with extended weekend hours and its own dedicated email address for bookings. The Farm Shop, which carries the vineyard's wines alongside locally sourced fruit and veg, deli items, ready meals, beers, spirits and free-from ranges, is open during all centre hours.
Standard opening hours for the garden centre (and therefore for vineyard wine sales on site) are Monday to Saturday 9:00am to 5:30pm and Sunday 10:00am to 4:30pm, with the Pets & Aquatics department running the same hours and tills opening at 10:30am on Sundays. The centre is closed on Easter Sunday, Christmas Day and Boxing Day.
Events and what's on
The Whitehall events calendar is run through the garden centre rather than the vineyard directly, but it gives visitors a clear reason to plan a day around a bottle. Buying Whitehall Vineyard wines online
The full Whitehall Vineyard range is available to order online through the centre's website, with delivery calculated at checkout. Orders for in-stock lines placed before 2:00pm Monday to Thursday are eligible for next-day delivery via APC Overnight, subject to standard UK delivery terms. Heavy and bulky items (which can include case orders) are sent on Whitehall's own vehicles within roughly an 80-mile radius of the Lacock warehouse; outside that radius a quote-based delivery is arranged. Highlands and Borders postcodes carry a separate £19.50 fee with a 15kg weight cap, and unfortunately the company does not deliver to Northern Ireland.
Gift cards are also available in three designs (Agapanthus, Peony and Lavender Lodge), all from £5.00, and can be redeemed in store on goods, services and event tickets within 365 days of purchase. Gift cards cannot, however, be used to buy further gift cards.
Sustainability and provenance
Whitehall's wider sustainability commitments give extra reassurance for eco-conscious buyers of the vineyard's wines. The Lacock site is heated by two biomass boilers running on wood pellets - saving an estimated 110 tonnes of CO₂ per year - and a 2015 LED refit reduced energy consumption by up to 45%. Catering disposables in the restaurants are made from Vegeware compostable materials, plant waste is sent for recycling into compost, and Whitehall has phased in taupe-coloured kerbside-recyclable polypropylene plant pots across its growers in place of traditional black plastic. Wines are bottled in glass, with all wines at the standard 75cl format stated on the producer's terms of sale.
