All Angels Vineyard - Hand-Crafted English Sparkling Wine in West Berkshire

Nestled in the rolling Berkshire countryside just five minutes from Newbury and only 45 minutes by direct train from London Paddington, All Angels Vineyard is one of England's most characterful small family wineries. Set on the historic Church Farm estate in the parish of Enborne, the vineyard takes its evocative name from the twelfth-century parish church of St Michael and All Angels that stands next to its smallest plot, an enduring reminder that this is a place where centuries of rural heritage meet the patient craft of traditional-method English sparkling wine.

At All Angels the philosophy is uncompromising: "Our intention has never been to produce wines in huge volumes, simply to produce wines of the highest quality." Every bottle released is estate-grown, hand-nurtured and aged far beyond industry norms on lees in bottle, in pursuit of depth, precision and the unmistakable hallmark of a long, slow English vintage.

A Family Vineyard Born in 2011

All Angels is the work of the Darley family, custodians of Church Farm since 2009. Founder and former City lawyer Mark Darley had originally intended the farm as a weekend retreat, but he and his wife Christine quickly fell under the spell of the historic house, the gardens, fields and ponds. Sunday evening conversations that began as aspirations for "lock-up and leave" weekends soon turned, after a well-timed episode of Countryfile, to dreams of vines. An exacting terroir analysis was commissioned and produced a compelling answer: the sandy loam over green sand, the warming gravel and flint, and the gentle south-facing slopes at Enborne were ideal for growing grapes for outstanding English sparkling wine.

The first vine was planted in May 2011. The vineyard name, All Angels, was taken from the nearby C12th parish church, the estate's oldest neighbour. The All Angels shield reflects the unique story of Church Farm and its surroundings, spanning eight centuries and shaping the history of Britain itself. Kay (DipWSET, Brand Strategy and Marketing) joined the team in 2019 after a career in corporate London and now leads on wine strategy, while Christine oversees operations and the elegant restoration of the farmhouse and the Tasting Barn. Three Labradors - Skeena, Copper and Kasi - double as the vineyard's Guardian Angels, patrolling the rows at dawn and dusk to keep cheeky rabbits, pigeons and pheasants at bay.

The story is rounded out by a passionate commitment to volunteer days: typical four to six-hour sessions that begin with a welcome cuppa and end with a glass of All Angels in the barn. Volunteers help with pruning, wire-raising and harvest, and are an essential part of the team throughout the seasons.

Volunteering and Belonging

All Angels regularly welcomes a small army of enthusiastic volunteers into the vineyard, particularly at key moments such as winter pruning and harvest. A typical day begins with a welcome cuppa, a round of introductions, and a short overview of All Angels and the session ahead. After a full safety briefing the team moves into the vineyard in pairs or small groups to work through tasks such as vine pruning, trellis wire raising or grape harvesting. All equipment is provided; the day finishes with a delicious All Angels supper and a couple of glasses of the estate's award-winning sparkling wine. The experience can be a one-off or the start of joining the volunteer team, working the vineyard through the seasons.

The Vineyards: South-Facing Slopes, Sandy Soils and Lots of Wildlife

All Angels' vineyards face south with rolling slopes that maximise the sun's rays throughout the year. The soils are free-draining sandy loam over green sand, interspersed with warming gravel, flint and shallow clay deposits, ideal growing conditions for the classic cool-climate trio of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier that underpins the All Angels range, with Pinot Gris and the red-skinned hybrid Rondo playing important supporting roles, particularly in the sparkling rosés.

Nurturing the vines is hands-on. Hardly a day goes by when the team is not walking the rows, watching them develop and deciding on the next step to bring them to their peak. Sustainable practice is woven into everything: the Holtwood block has been transformed from rough scrubland into a wildflower meadow interspersed with apple orchards and ponds, providing a haven for wild bees, wetland wildlife and an extraordinary cast of birdlife including boxing hares, thermal-gliding red kites and bats at dusk.

Sustainability, in Their Own Words

Their mantra is simple and direct: "We are here for a short time, and we need to leave the land in a better place than it was found." A love and respect for nature runs through everything the family does. Wildlife watching is described as a timeless privilege, and the wider estate has become a mosaic of wildflower meadows, hedges and ponds. See their work in action on a guided tour.

The Wines: Patience, Precision and Six Years (or More) on Lees

All Angels produces single-vintage traditional-method English sparkling wines shaped by patient ageing in bottle on the lees, often for six years or more. Each release reflects the growing season of that year and the team's blending decisions: "There is no rush - heaven can wait: perfection takes time."

Classic Cuvée 2019 - The Multi-Award Best Seller

All Angels' flagship and most decorated wine. Classic Cuvée 2019 is a traditional-method blend of Chardonnay (48%), Pinot Noir (43%) and Pinot Meunier (9%), aged a minimum of six years on lees and a further six months on cork. The extended lees ageing and unusually high proportion of Pinot Noir give a wine of unmistakable depth: "Light golden colour, exuberant, fine bubbles. Layers of pastry, croissant and lemon patisserie notes, alongside flavours of English apple turnover, honeysuckle and crushed wild strawberry as the wine develops in glass. Finely balanced, fresh acidity, beautiful, lengthy finish."

This vintage has been turning heads across the industry. It was awarded Gold at the Global Sparkling Masters 2026 (judged by an experienced panel of Masters of Wine) and subsequently picked up another Gold at the WineGB Awards 2026, cementing its reputation as one of the best sparkling wines produced in England today. Drinks writer and broadcaster Susy Atkins (of BBC1's Saturday Kitchen) called it "Love the rich autolytic flavours here, yeast, bread, biscuit - but still fresh and lively. Long finish - superb!" Ideal with canapés, sushi, seafood and goat's cheese salads.

RRP £42.00 per bottle. Buy Classic Cuvée 2019 direct from the vineyard.

No. 36 - A Sparkler for the Whole Meal

Released in November 2025, No. 36 is All Angels' "variation on an original theme" - a gentle, food-friendly sparkler designed to flow effortlessly from aperitif to dessert. The name is a tip of the hat to Elgar's Opus 36, the Enigma Variations, an appropriate reference for a wine that is intentionally different: fewer bubbles, softer acidity, more depth of flavour. As Mark puts it, "It's the bottle you always want to have chilling in the fridge."

The blend is Chardonnay (54%), Pinot Noir (26%) and Pinot Meunier (20%), aged six years on lees. With its notes of brioche, green apple, citrus and peach, it pairs beautifully with seafood, fish, chicken, soft cheeses like Brie and Camembert, festive platters or Sunday roast. Tim Triptree MW of Christie's called it "a very good English sparkling wine… a refreshing and vibrant citrus and apple flavoured, approachable sparkling wine." MasterChef Champion and The Silks head chef Thomas Frake described it as "An English wine of exceptional winemaking quality… long aged on lees to guarantee that signature All Angels depth of flavour; rich in yeasted, warm and buttery croissants." Limited to 8,000 bottles.

RRP £36.00 per bottle. Buy No. 36 direct from All Angels.

Sparkling Rosé 2019 - Six Years on Lees, Seven Years in the Making

Released in June 2026 after six years on lees, Sparkling Rosé 2019 is the most complex rosé All Angels has yet produced, limited to just 2,000 bottles. Unusually for English sparkling, it is a Pinot Gris-led blend (55%) complemented by Rondo (32%) and a generous 13% reserve of rich, aromatic Pinot Noir, the result of many patient vintages. Founder Mark Darley: "This is a wine we have been patient about. The 2019 harvest gave us something exceptional to work with, and the extended time on lees has produced a wine with real depth. We didn't want to rush it."

The result is "a salmon pink colour. Notes of English wild berries, preserved citrus and spiced bakewell, layered with minerals and hints of tobacco… Dry, beautifully fresh and balanced acidity. Uniform, fine and consistent bubbles. Vigorous. Tantalising, long finish." Pair with seafood, fresh sushi, sheep and goat's cheeses, Highland beef or venison carpaccio, baked ham, chicken and ham pie, wild boar risotto, Sunday lunch, or even the famed bacon sandwich. Allow roughly 20 minutes out of the fridge once opened to let the CO₂ settle.

RRP £42.00 per bottle. Buy Sparkling Rosé 2019 direct from the vineyard.

Sparkling Rosé 2018 - Stylishly Balanced

A delicate peach in colour, Sparkling Rosé 2018 is a Rondo (61%) and Pinot Gris (39%) partnership, three and a half years on lees plus a further nine months on cork. Roger Jones of The Buyer Magazine chose it as one of his ten best wines of 2023, the only English wine in his selection: "the perfect harmony of berry and savoury notes, bright freshness and precision. This would be perfect on a winter's day - and we'd say it's pretty good for spring, summer and autumn too." Aromas of raspberry, nectarine, pomegranate and softly spiced raspberry crumble lead to a fruit-forward, long, elegant finish. RRP £42.00 per bottle.

Sparkling Rosé 2014 - Outstandingly Decadent

All Angels' first ever commercial Sparkling Rosé, hand nurtured for over ten years. A 60/32/8 blend of Rondo, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir aged a minimum of two years on lees, it has a deep, autumnal hue and aromas of cherry blossom, wild strawberries and hedgerow berries alongside smooth, slowly baked shortcake. Fiona Beckett of The Telegraph described it as "just jam-packed full of strawberry, raspberry and redcurrant summer pudding flavours." Tom Cannavan praised "a nicely balanced combination of small, dry red berry and orange fruitiness, and a line of citrussy acidity that gives it a fresh and balanced appeal." Confident on its own, with afternoon scones and jam, or with a warming fruit pudding. RRP £44.50 per bottle. View the 2014 rosé.

10-Year Anniversary Classic Cuvée - 96-Point Gold

A genuine milestone release. The 10-Year Anniversary Classic Cuvée blends Chardonnay (50%), Pinot Noir (28%), Pinot Gris (11%) and Pinot Meunier (11%) from the standout 2014 vintage, with over nine years of lees ageing and a further nine months on cork. It was awarded a 96-point Gold at the IWSC - "Alpine strawberry mingles with touches of truffle, cobnuts, and honey on toasted sourdough… beautifully defined wine with vibrant acidity and a long, nutty finish." Roger Jones called it "youthful and precise, a refined, elegant sparkling wine, that has a perfect creamy texture with bright, tantalising fruit notes…a superlative sparkling." Beautifully packaged in a 10-year anniversary gift box, currently sold out as a one-off limited release. RRP £65.00 per bottle.

The current collection is rounded out by several recent vintages including the newly launched Sparkling Rosé 2019, with bottles of all current releases available directly from the All Angels wine shop.
