Grape Passions - Independent Wine Merchant & Wholesaler Serving East Anglia

Grape Passions is one of East Anglia's longest-standing independent wine merchants. Founded in 2005 and headquartered in a modern, energy-efficient warehouse on the Eastways Industrial Estate in Witham, Essex, the company supplies restaurants, gastro-pubs, bars, hotels, function venues and private members' clubs with a carefully chosen portfolio of wines and champagnes drawn from family growers across Europe and the New World.

Although the firm is described as a "wine supplier to the hospitality industry", the way the team works, sourcing direct from growers, importing on its own logistics, designing wine lists, training front-of-house staff and even running wine-maker dinners, means it operates much more like a specialist wine partner than a cash-and-carry wholesaler. The company is registered in England and Wales as Grape Passions Ltd (company number 04193323).

Where Grape Passions Is Based

Grape Passions operates from a newly built, highly insulated business park unit on the edge of Witham in Essex. The location was chosen for its quick access to the A12 and the wider East Anglia road network, which is critical for a business that runs its own fleet of liveried delivery vans and promises a same-week service to its trade customers.

The Grape Passions Story

Grape Passions was founded in 2005 with a simple proposition: hand-pick wines from smaller, family-owned growers around the world and deliver them to independent hospitality businesses in East Anglia at the right price. Twenty years on, that founding principle still drives the buying policy.

From the outset, the team chose to import directly rather than buy through UK agents. Owning the supply chain end-to-end, from the producer's cellar to the customer's cellar, gives Grape Passions tighter quality control, better margins for its customers and the ability to bring genuine discoveries to the UK market that aren't on every other wholesaler's list.

The firm has long-standing relationships with several of its producers dating right back to 2005. Champagne house Beaumont des Crayères, for example, credits the partnership, noting that the Grape Passions team "got fully involved in the distribution of our champagnes" and that sales in Suffolk, Essex, Hertfordshire and the rest of East Anglia "have kept growing each year ever since".

Who the Team Works With

Hospitality Trade

The core customer base is made up of independent restaurants, gastro-pubs, hotel restaurants, country-house venues, private members' clubs and event caterers across Essex, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire and the wider East Anglia region. The minimum order for free delivery is £200 ex VAT, and each account is given a regular delivery day so kitchens and cellar managers can plan around it.

Corporate Gifts

Alongside the trade business, Grape Passions runs a corporate gift service. Businesses wanting to thank clients, reward staff or mark a special occasion can order mixed cases of wine, which the team will tailor to budget and taste and ship directly to recipients, complete with personalised messages at no extra charge.

The Grape Passions Portfolio

The current portfolio reflects a deliberately broad sweep of styles and origins. Buying is weighted towards smaller, family-owned estates that have been cultivating their own vines for generations.

Country-by-country, the range covers:

  • France - Champagne (including house partner Beaumont des Crayères), Alsace, the Loire, Burgundy, Bordeaux and the Rhône, with Château de Beaucastel among the headline names in the Rhône range.
  • Italy - Family producers from Veneto (including Asolo Prosecco growers), Tuscany, Puglia and Sicily, with names such as Cantina Schinosa, Scriani and Castellari Bergaglio.
  • Spain - Bodegas Piqueras from La Mancha, and Pazo do Mar from Rías Baixas in Galicia.
  • Portugal - Douro and Vinho Verde producers such as Quinta Nova and Vale do Bom Feito.
  • Argentina - Including the iconic Catena Zapata stable of labels and the Piqueras range.
  • Chile - With Lurton-owned estates and Avondale-style South African crossover producers.
  • South Africa, Australia and New Zealand - rounding out the New World selection.

The English wine category is also represented. Featured as a "Popular Pour" in summer 2024, the Pinot Noir Coastal Reach English Rosé is a 2022-vintage pale, just off-dry rosé sourced from vineyards along the southern English coastline, with lifted red-berry fruit and what the producer describes as a "simply delicious" finish.

Featured for the summer season is Zinfandel Feather Falls, a medium-sweet rosé from the United States described as having "a red berry and peach bouquet, a lovely watermelon and strawberry freshness with a creamy finish".

For trade customers wanting to browse the full live list with vintage, bottle size and case pricing, the inventory lives behind the Grape Portal trade ordering platform, a smartphone-friendly interface where orders can be placed, statements reviewed and order history checked. Prospective customers apply for an account.

The Service Behind the Wines

What sets Grape Passions apart from a generic cash-and-carry is the depth of service wrapped around the bottles. The team acts as an extension of the customer's front-of-house and back-office, offering:

  • Help building or refreshing a wine list to suit the establishment and its cuisine.
  • Food and wine pairing advice for menu development.
  • Design and print of enticing wine lists, often produced in-house through the marketing team.
  • Initial and ongoing staff wine training to keep the team confident with by-the-glass pours.
  • Margin and pricing guidance to maximise the profitability of the wine category.
  • Weekly phone or e-mail reminders to place orders so stock never runs low.
  • Wine-maker dinners and customer-engagement events to help venues tell the story of the wines they pour.

Long-standing customers praise the team for everything from emergency same-day deliveries to "compiling a new wine list that increased sales".

Delivery and Logistics

Grape Passions runs its own dedicated fleet of liveried vans and employs its own drivers. New accounts are given a regular delivery slot, allowing kitchens to fit the wine delivery into their weekly routine. Orders can be placed through the Grape Portal app, by phone or by e-mail, and a weekly reminder call is offered to any customer who would prefer not to track their own stock.

The minimum order for free delivery is £200 ex VAT, and all wines are stored in a thermostatically controlled area of the warehouse to keep them in the best possible condition between arrival and despatch.

Environmental Commitment

The business takes its environmental footprint seriously, an unusual priority for a wholesale operation. Initiatives include:

  • Re-use of delivery boxes where possible and full recycling of cardboard, plastic and glass.
  • Default e-mailed invoices and statements, with paper copies only sent on request.
  • Online access to statements and purchase history through the Grape Portal, reducing the need for paper.
  • An efficient transport schedule using the company's own drivers and vehicles from a single, well-insulated warehouse with excellent road access.
  • A switch of Italian imports from road to rail freight, significantly reducing CO₂ emissions on those routes.
  • Corporate membership of the Essex Wildlife Trust, the county's leading conservation charity, since 2007. The Trust protects more than 8,400 acres of land and runs educational visitor centres across the county.

The team says the commitment is ongoing and is reviewed regularly as new opportunities arise to operate more sustainably.

Meet the Team

The people behind the business have direct hospitality backgrounds, which is why they speak the same language as their customers.

  • John Linton - Sales Director. John joined in 2014 and combines a hospitality-sector background with extensive wine knowledge to deliver advice and ongoing support to the customer base.
  • Elliott Vale - Account Manager. Covers Cambridgeshire, Suffolk and Hertfordshire; when not working he can be found DJing at various events.
  • Martin Cranfield - Account Manager. Came to Grape Passions from a career in hospitality and wine retail sales; in his spare time he walks his dog along the Essex coast.
  • Jane Dearman - Office Manager. Has run shipping and logistics at Grape Passions since 2017 and was instrumental in steering the business through Brexit and the Covid-19 disruption.
  • Carolyn Linton - Marketing & Finance Coordinator. A cheerful presence in the office who handles queries on orders and provides marketing material for customers.
  • Beth Streetley - Design & Marketing Executive. Started as an office administrator and now leads on creative output for the business.
  • Simon Mosedale - Driver & Warehouse Operative. Ensures the picking and delivery process runs smoothly.
  • Aaron Whitaker - Driver & Warehouse Operative. Combines hard work with a playful spirit; a keen dog-walker and go-kart racer outside of work hours.
  • Matt Welsh - Driver & Warehouse Operative. The newest member of the team, an avid runner and practising painter.

Events, Tastings and the Grape Passions Calendar

The company has a long tradition of running trade tastings and wine-maker dinners. A well-known annual wine tasting held at Le Talbooth in Dedham on 16 May 2016, photographed by Just Jaq Photography (07971 201963), gives a flavour of the kind of sit-down tasting format the business favours.

How to Open a Trade Account

Because Grape Passions is a trade-only supplier, the consumer-facing shop is replaced by an application form. Prospective hospitality customers apply to open an account, after which the team sets up a regular delivery day and walks the new customer through the Grape Portal ordering platform.

Corporate gift enquiries and existing account queries are handled through the same contact channels: phone 01376 538888 or e-mail info@grapepassions.co.uk.
