Lyde Arundel Vineyard & Wedding Venue, Hereford
Tucked away in the rolling Herefordshire countryside just a mile outside the city of Hereford, Lyde Arundel is one of those rare British estates that quietly combines two very different passions under a single family roof: an award-worthy wedding and events venue built from lovingly restored farm buildings, and a south-facing English vineyard producing small parcels of still white wine. The address - Hereford, HR4 7SN - places it within easy reach of the cathedral city, while the immediate setting feels a world removed from it, hidden as it is behind a screen of mature trees and looking out over a spectacular manmade lake.
A family estate shaped over four decades
Lyde Arundel has been in the same family since 1983. When Robert and Karen Watkins took it on, it was a working farm with a clutch of tired stone outbuildings and a great deal of potential. Over the four decades that followed, they set about transforming the holding into the beautiful and secluded estate it is today, an estate now operated by their daughters Lydia and partner Tomas on the weddings side, and by their youngest daughter on the vineyard and wine side.
The first major landscape project was the lake. Dug by hand in the early years and now so well established it is impossible to tell it is manmade, the lake is the visual centrepiece of Lyde Arundel. Tens of thousands of trees planted in successive decades have matured into a natural sound and sight barrier, creating the perfect secluded setting for arrival drinks, canapés and, of course, wedding photographs.
The traditional farm buildings - the stables, the hay loft, the old fertiliser shed, one of the cold stores - were converted in stages using local craftsmen and oak from the farm's own woodlands. The stables, hay loft and fertiliser shed together became what is now known as The Haywain, the smaller of the two barns, with its enormous inglenook fireplace, oak floor ideal for dancing, minstrels' gallery, arrow-slit windows and stone alcoves. The Great Hall, formerly a cold store, was restored to its former glory by chipping away inches of foam to reveal the original Herefordshire stone and a spectacular thirty-six-metre-long ceiling supported by ten huge beams - a space so dramatic it gives the venue what must be one of the longest aisles in the county for civil ceremonies.
From farmyard to wedding venue
The wedding business grew almost by accident. Once The Haywain had been converted for private and farm use, a friend's son asked whether he might hold his wedding reception there; one thing led to another and, in 2005, Lyde Arundel began hosting weddings in earnest. Robert and Karen set up the business, while their son gradually took on more of the farming and their youngest daughter became involved in wedding photography before turning her attention to the vineyard and wine production.
Lydia and Tomas moved back to Hereford in 2008 to open a restaurant in what is now called the Quiet Room upstairs. Initially it traded mid-week so as not to disrupt weddings, then grew into an in-house catering company also called The Haywain, which had considerable success until 2013 when the couple decided a change was in order. They brought with them more than a decade of experience in hotels, catering and weddings - and the experience of being recently married themselves, which means they really do empathise with what couples actually want on the day.
The vineyard at Peacock Paddock
The latest chapter of the Lyde Arundel story is the vineyard on the farm's south-facing slope, looking out over the same picturesque lake that frames the wedding photographs. The vines were planted to make use of the slope's natural advantages - good sunlight exposure, free-draining soil and shelter from the prevailing wind - and the estate now produces two English wines under its own label.
Peacock Paddock
Peacock Paddock is described by the estate as "a fine example of modern English white wine". It is built around the Seyval Blanc and Phoenix grape varieties, picked for the floral notes they bring to the finished wine. The result is a light, refreshing pour with crisp, floral aromas that the team specifically recommends for a summer evening - exactly the kind of bottle you can imagine chilling on the lawn between ceremonies and the wedding breakfast. The grapes are pressed and the wine bottled at Three Choirs Vineyard, one of England's longest-established wineries, also based in Herefordshire.
Skinny Dip
Lyde Arundel's second wine, Skinny Dip, takes its name from the lake that sits beneath the vineyard. It is part of the same family of light, food-friendly English whites produced from the farm's south-facing slope, and is bottled at Three Choirs alongside Peacock Paddock. Both wines are available in limited quantities because, like everything else on the estate, the vineyard is run on a small, family scale rather than a commercial one.
As Countryfile's Adam Henson put it after visiting in October 2013, "The bunches of grapes are looking huge!… and it's a wonderful way to diversify the farm…" - a sentiment the Watkins family clearly agrees with.
Bespoke weddings at Lyde Arundel
Weddings remain the heart of the Lyde Arundel business. The estate deliberately hosts only one wedding a week, which means the barns, the gardens, the lake and the courtyards are exclusively yours for your wedding week, from Thursday access through to late-night departure on the Saturday. Couples can come back as many times as they like for viewings, at any time of day, bringing whoever they want to share in the excitement.
Decoration runs from the absolute minimalist - the bare stone and oak being gorgeous enough in itself - to the wildly creative. Past weddings have featured brides and grooms arriving by helicopter, hay bale and deckchair seating outside, snow machines and fireworks, open-topped double-decker buses ferrying guests to the venue, a rodeo bull, and a mobile wood-fired clay pizza oven serving handmade pizzas. The team is comfortable with all of it, and has long-standing contacts with trusted suppliers for bands, DJs, florists, cake makers, pig roasts and pretty much anything else couples might dream up.
The Haywain - up to 100 seated guests
The smaller of the two barns, The Haywain is an intimate and enchanting setting with the minstrels' gallery as a natural stage for musicians. It works beautifully for weddings of up to 100 seated guests and is the venue of choice for couples who want the smaller, cosier feel.
The Great Hall - up to 200 seated guests
The Great Hall is a dramatic space. With its 36-metre length and ten towering beams, it can be dressed as lavishly as you wish or left close to bare for couples who want the architecture to do the talking. Clever use of decorative trees can also make it feel intimate for gatherings of as few as sixty.
Civil ceremonies in three locations
Lyde Arundel is fully licensed for civil ceremonies, and couples have three very different settings in which to exchange their vows.
The Summer House
For couples who want to marry outside, the Summer House is a favourite. Guests are seated on the lawn while the soundtrack alternates between the couple's chosen music and the sound of birds in the trees and ducks on the lake. The aisle starts in front of the house, descends the steps and rises back up the centre of the lawn to meet the groom under the summer house - perhaps the most romantic of the three options.
The Haywain
The Haywain offers an intimate and enchanting setting with fantastic photographic opportunities from the gallery above, a flexible bridal entrance and doors that can be opened in fine weather to bring the outside in.
The Great Hall
For grand ceremonies, the Great Hall offers the dramatic backdrop - a wide aisle that can accommodate even the biggest dresses and a cavernous space that can either be filled with decoration or left largely as nature built it.
Special celebrations and events
Although weddings are the headline act, the venue's flexibility means Lyde Arundel has hosted almost every kind of celebration imaginable over the years: birthday parties, anniversaries, christenings, corporate launches, fashion shows, flower festivals, charity balls, christmas parties, medieval banquets and barn dances with ceilidh bands in the Haywain. There has even been a rock concert in the Great Hall. The capacity simply doubles for non-seated events - so The Haywain can host around 200 and the Great Hall around 400 standing.
The estate reserves a charitable allowance each year for local good causes, distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, and offers a reduced rate for charity events thereafter at its discretion. Two of the charities Lyde Arundel has supported with particular pleasure are St Michael's Hospice and the Little Princess Trust.

Lyde Arundel is happy to host celebrations and other events for groups of 30 guests and over. As every event is different, the team prefers to put together a bespoke quote after a face-to-face conversation.
Tours and tastings
Because Lyde Arundel operates as a private wedding venue, the estate does not currently offer public vineyard tours or paid wine-tasting sessions. Bottles of Peacock Paddock and Skinny Dip can be purchased directly from the estate, particularly during the summer when the vineyard is in full growth and the wines are best enjoyed overlooking the lake for which Skinny Dip is named.
The farm today
Despite the weddings business, Lyde Arundel remains a working farm. The arable operation predominantly grows wheat, peas and oil seed rape, a long way from the small herd of cattle and the potato crop that once dominated the rotation. Restoration remains an ongoing project, with new lakes, conversions and replanting added whenever the farm calendar allows - hence, eventually, the vineyard.
Getting to Lyde Arundel
The estate is signed from the Canon Pyon Road (the A4110), and once you're through the entrance you immediately feel the benefit of all those planted trees: hushed, private and blissfully cut off from the outside world. There is large off-road parking on site, and guests are actively welcome to leave vehicles overnight so nobody has to worry about taxis at the end of the night. Local taxi companies offer 10% off for Lyde Arundel guests, and there are plenty of places to stay within a couple of miles, from country pubs to boutique B&Bs, in every price bracket.
For weddings, couples are encouraged to get married from 1pm onwards; for evening receptions, guest arrival is from 6.30pm. Exclusive venue access begins on the Thursday prior to a Saturday wedding reception, or on the Friday prior to a Saturday evening reception.
