Set on the seaward edge of Mersea Island in Essex, Mersea Island Vineyard is a family-owned, award-winning estate that has grown from a handful of vines and an old barn in 1997 into a thriving vineyard, brewery, B&B, café and event venue. A Coastal Vineyard With a Story
The story of Mersea Island Vineyard begins in 1997, when Roger and Jacqui Barber bought the farm on Rewsalls Lane, East Mersea. At the time, the holding consisted of little more than rows of Müller Thurgau, Ortega and Rechensteiner vines and a single old barn. Over the decades that followed, the Barbers have planted additional varieties, including Solaris, Caberay, Noir and Rondo, gradually transforming the estate into the multi-faceted venue it is today.
The island location is central to the vineyard's character. Mersea's cool coastal climate, sandy soils and natural biodiversity combine to produce grapes that are crisp, vibrant and unmistakably tied to their terroir. The sea breeze that rolls across the vines lends a freshness and salinity that the team believe is impossible to replicate further inland. Each bottle is presented as the spirit of the island itself, shaped as much by the surrounding saltmarshes and shoreline as by the winemaker's hand.
Visitors arriving at the vineyard quickly sense that this is a working estate built around its setting rather than imposed upon it. The barn that once stood alone is still very much present in the architecture of the property, anchoring a venue that now welcomes holidaymakers, wedding parties, festival-goers and day visitors throughout the year.
The Wines
Mersea Island Vineyard produces a focused range of still wines that put the maritime terroir firmly in the glass. All six core wines are priced at £17.50 per bottle, reflecting a deliberate approach to quality and consistency rather than a tiered range.
White and Rosé Wines
- Island Dry - A crisp, dry white made from estate-grown Reichensteiner grapes, with notes of citrus and a fresh, lightly acidic finish. A natural partner for fish or white meat.
- Mehalah (Dry) - An aromatic dry white crafted from Ortega grapes, showing elderflower on the nose. Equally good as an aperitif or paired with fish or poultry.
- Mehalah (Medium Dry) - A softer medium-dry style made from Müller Thurgau, with a touch of residual grape sugar that makes it approachable on almost any occasion.
- Blush - A light, refreshing rosé made from a blend of Müller Thurgau and Red Pinot Noir, packed with summer fruit flavour and ready to drink on its own or with a wide range of foods.
Vintage Releases
- Regatta (Müller Thurgau 2025) - A rich and luscious medium white, layered with aromas of pear and green apple moving towards peach and apricot. The residual sugar softens the acidity while preserving freshness.
- Native (Solaris & Reichensteiner 2025) - A lively, crisp dry white showing lemon, lime and hints of pineapple, with the acidity carrying the fruit cleanly to a dry finish.
The Brewery: Local Ales Crafted on the Island
Since expanding into brewing, Mersea Island Vineyard has become as well known for its ales as its wines. Housed on the same Rewsalls Lane site, the brewery crafts five core real ales that draw on the same coastal identity as the wines above. Each ale is priced at £3.50 per bottle.
The Core Range
- Island Yo Boy - A session bitter and the brewery's most popular beer. A secret recipe featuring Cara malt creates a smooth flavour, balanced by the bitterness of Cascade hops.
- Island Gold - A light, lager-style ale brewed using Lager malt and a careful blend of hops for a sweet, refreshing profile.
- Island Skippers - A dark amber best bitter built on Cara and roasted malts.
- Island Oyster - The standout brew, made by adding three dozen freshly shucked oysters towards the end of the boil. Chocolate and roasted malts create a rich flavour, while oats give the beer its characteristically thick body.
- Island Mud - A smooth, dark mild that sits close to a traditional regional style and has become a local favourite.

Bed and Breakfast Among the Vines
For visitors who want to fully immerse themselves in the estate, the Mersea Island Vineyard B&B offers accommodation right in the heart of the working vineyard. The property provides three comfortable double rooms and two cosy twin rooms, each with its own en-suite bathroom, tea-and-coffee-making facilities, fresh sheets, towels and bathroom amenities.
Mornings begin with a full English breakfast made from local ingredients, accompanied by fruit juices and cereals, served in the cosy breakfast room. Guests can enjoy a glass of wine on the terrace, take in sweeping views of the vineyard and surrounding countryside, and fall asleep to the peaceful sounds of the rural island setting. The B&B also appears on Booking.com for those who prefer to book through a third-party platform.
The Café
Day visitors are well served by the on-site Mersea Island Vineyard Café, which offers a tempting range of hot and cold food prepared using produce sourced from local bakeries and farm shops. The menu includes sandwiches, toasties, paninis, baguettes and jacket potatoes, with the option of eating indoors in the cosy café space or out in the courtyard when the weather permits.
The Cork 'n' Cap Shop
Set up in a shed during the 2020 lockdown, the Cork 'n' Cap Shop has grown into a much-loved showcase for East Anglian producers. The shop stocks an ever-expanding range of local beers, wines, spirits and other produce, including cooking oils, sauces and candles from across the region.

Venue Hire for Weddings, Parties and Celebrations
The vineyard offers two distinct venues, surrounded by rolling vines and the tranquil beauty of the Essex coast, both fully licensed for civil ceremonies. Catering can be supplied in-house, with outside caterers also welcome.
The Vineyard Barn
The Barn is suited to more intimate gatherings, seating up to 40 guests for a meal or hosting up to 100 guests for a ceremony. Available year-round and seven days a week, it provides a flexible, characterful space for smaller weddings and milestone events.
The Marquee
For larger celebrations, the marquee accommodates up to 200 guests and balances a classy aesthetic with rustic charm. With views over the vineyard from the adjoining lawn and patio, it works equally well for ceremonies, receptions and corporate entertaining. The marquee is available for use from Easter through to late September.

Alongside weddings, the vineyard hosts birthday parties, anniversaries, corporate retreats and meetings, private dining experiences, and wakes or memorial services. Hog Roast and Mobile Bar Hire
Beyond hosting events on site, the team has built two related catering businesses that travel to weddings, birthdays, corporate events, festivals and private gatherings across Essex and Suffolk.
The Hog Roast
The Mobile Hog Roast service delivers slow-roasted pork with crispy golden crackling, served with soft rolls, homemade apple sauce and stuffing. Side salads and roasted vegetables can be added, and vegetarian or alternative meat options are available on request. The team handles everything from set-up to service and clean-up, leaving hosts free to enjoy the day.
Outdoor Bar Hire
The Outdoor Bar Hire service brings a fully stocked and professionally staffed bar experience to any chosen location. Offerings include real ales ranging from light lagers to full-bodied stouts, draught lagers on tap, locally sourced wines and rosé, real UK ciders and a wide range of spirits and mixers. Special requests are welcomed, making it easy to tailor the bar menu to suit a particular event.
Events at the Vineyard
Mersea Island Vineyard runs a varied events programme, headlined by its flagship Easter Beer Festival. The four-day festival brings together 35-plus real ales from Essex and East Anglia, a wide range of real ciders, wines from the vineyard, live music and food - including a hog roast Friday to Sunday and a BBQ every day - all with free parking on site.
The most recent festival ran from 3rd to 6th April 2026, with sessions from 11am to 6pm (12 noon to 6pm on Sunday). A previous edition ran 18th to 21st April 2025 in the same format.
Other seasonal highlights include the annual Festive Menu, offering two courses for £18.95 or three courses for £22.95 for groups of up to 28, and Valentine's Day wedding promotions highlighting remaining summer and following-year availability.
