Thorrington Mill Vineyard - A Coastal English Wine Estate on the Colne Estuary
A Coastal Vineyard in North Essex
Set on the Essex coast within sight of the salt marshes and tidal creeks of the Colne Estuary, Thorrington Mill Vineyard is a family-run English wine estate just outside Colchester. The 12-acre vineyard sits on south-facing slopes at sea level, where the maritime climate, free-draining soils and long sunshine hours of the Tendring coastline combine to give the wines a distinctive coastal character. Visitors will find a relaxed, working vineyard that opens its gates through the warmer months for tours, tastings, food and music evenings, private hire and corporate days.
The estate is open to walk-in visitors on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays from 10am to 4pm, when the vineyard shop serves coffee, cake and a glass of the estate's own wines, with no booking required. For those who want to linger a little longer, charcuterie grazing boxes are available to pre-order for a relaxed vineyard lunch, and a calendar of guided tours and seasonal events runs from May through to September.
The Story Behind the Name
The vineyard takes its name from Mill Farm, home to one of only three working tide mills in the country. The site carries centuries of agricultural heritage, and that sense of place and continuity shapes the way the vineyard is run today. Mark and Polly Baines, who own and manage the estate, describe their approach as rooted in the land and shaped by the coastal environment around them.
Their journey began in 2002 when they established a landscaping and fencing business, followed in 2015 by a glamping venture. In 2018, the family took on the wider farming business and, with it, the opportunity to realise a long-held dream of planting their own vineyard. The first 12 acres of vines went into the ground on carefully chosen, south-facing slopes that run down toward the salt marsh, with aspect and proximity to the coast guiding every decision.
The Vines and the Land
Three grape varieties do the heavy lifting at Thorrington Mill: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Bacchus. Each was chosen for its proven track record in English winemaking and its ability to translate this particular coastal site into a balanced, expressive wine. Together they allow the vineyard to produce a range of still and sparkling wines, from aromatic whites through rosé and on to a still red Pinot Noir and traditional-method sparkling styles.
The vineyard is managed with a blend of specialist machinery and traditional husbandry. A small flock of Shropshire sheep graze between the rows, providing a natural, sustainable way of managing the undervine growth and bringing the vines into closer harmony with the wider landscape. Open skies, coastal birdlife and the gentle pulse of the nearby tide mill complete a setting that feels both wild and carefully tended.
The Wines
Thorrington Mill produces five wines from the current vintage, all available to buy through the estate's online wine shop with delivery across GB Mainland.
Bacchus 2023 - £20.00
An intense and aromatic Bacchus layered with spice, spring blossom and citrus zest. A small neutral barrel-fermented component adds generosity and weight on the palate, while well-balanced acidity carries flavours of green apple, grapefruit and crushed ginger through to a clean, refreshing finish. The 2022 vintage won Gold at the Essex Wine Awards 2024, Silver at Wine GB East and was a finalist in the Great British Food Awards 2024. Buy Bacchus 2023.
Pinot Noir Rosé 2025 - £22.00
Pale salmon pink in the glass, this rosé is exotic and aromatic with notes of fleshy stone fruit, cut strawberries and a hint of citrus. The nose is bright with crushed strawberries and redcurrant, while the delicate yet broad palate carries flavours of raspberry compote and summer fruits. 13% abv. Silver Award winner at the National Wine of Great Britain Awards. Buy Pinot Noir Rosé 2025.
Pinot Noir 2022 - £28.00 (was £35.00)
A perfumed and supple Pinot Noir from vines that mix high-quality Burgundian and German clones, planted on a south-facing slope running down to the tidal estuary. The warm, dry 2022 season gave a pristine crop that was de-stemmed, cold-soaked and fermented with gentle punch-downs to encourage delicate aromatics and fine tannins, before nine months in used oak. Expect flavours of wild strawberry and forest floor supported by soft tannins. Only 4,000 bottles were produced. Awarded Gold and overall Best Pinot Noir in the Eastern Region at Wine GB, plus Bronze at the Great British Food Awards 2024 (judged by Chris Stein). Buy Pinot Noir 2022.
Sparkling Pinot Noir 2022 - £25.95
Deep red with a purple hue, this traditional-method sparkling Pinot Noir offers aromas of plums, cassis, brambly fruit and sweet spice. The palate is full-bodied, tense, pure and long. It carries a Silver from the East of England Wine GB Awards 2023, Silver from the National Wine of Great Britain Awards and Gold from the Regional Wine of Great Britain Awards. Buy Sparkling Pinot Noir 2022.
Sparkling Chardonnay 2025 - £30.00 (New Release)
The newest addition to the range. Pale yellow in colour with aromas of baked apple crumble and citrus blossom, the palate is medium weight with fresh acidity and flavours of orchard fruit. Previous vintages have taken Silver at the East of England Wine of GB Awards 2023, Silver at the National Wine of Great Britain Awards and Gold at the Regional Wine of Great Britain Awards. Buy Sparkling Chardonnay 2025.
All wines are quoted inclusive of VAT, with a flat £10 delivery charge per order to GB Mainland addresses (excluding the Scottish Highlands). The vineyard trades as T Glover & Son, VAT number GB 102890392.
