Thornbury Castle: A 500-Year-Old Tudor Castle Hotel Near Bristol
Thornbury Castle is one of England's most evocative heritage stays: a real Tudor castle that has been welcoming guests since the reign of Henry VIII and today operates as a luxury hotel and restaurant. Set in fifteen acres of walled gardens in the market town of Thornbury, just north of Bristol and on the southern edge of the Cotswolds, it is a member of the Relais & Châteaux collection and holds 3AA Rosettes for its food. The hotel has 26 individually styled bedchambers, a fine-dining restaurant headed by Culinary Director David Williams, a busy calendar of seasonal events and a portfolio of distinctly Tudor experiences including longbow archery, axe throwing, falconry, murder-mystery dinners and carriage rides through the surrounding countryside.
The hotel runs a notable wine and spirits programme. Around 200 bottles are offered through a wine list curated by Sommelier Frederic Bellard, drawing on English vineyards, the classic European regions and the New World. A signature house product is Thornbury Castle Sloe Gin, presented as a complimentary decanter in every bedchamber. The castle's kitchen garden, run by Head Gardener Jeff and his team, supplies much of the produce used by the restaurant.
Location and Setting
Thornbury Castle sits on Castle Street in the historic market town of Thornbury, South Gloucestershire, postcode BS35 1HH. It is roughly twenty minutes' drive from Bristol city centre and Bristol Parkway, with excellent road links via the M4 and M5 motorways, and within comfortable reach of Bath, Cheltenham and the Cotswolds. The wider setting is quintessentially English: rolling countryside, the medieval towns of the Cotswolds, and a clutch of well-known regional attractions within easy driving distance, including Berkeley Castle, the Roman Baths, Thermae Bath Spa, Clifton Suspension Bridge, SS Great Britain, Westonbirt Arboretum and the annual Bristol Balloon Fiesta. A Tudor Castle: Five Centuries of History
The castle was begun in 1511 by Edward Stafford, the 3rd Duke of Buckingham, at that time the only man in England whose wealth rivalled that of King Henry VIII himself. The licence to crenellate was granted in 1510 and construction was driven by sheer ambition: Stafford intended his new residence to befit a near-equal of the king. The inner gateway, dated 1511, is adorned with Stafford Knots and the Latin form of the Duke's motto, Hinc, meaning 'henceforth'.
The display of wealth did not go unnoticed. In 1521 the Duke was attainted for treason and beheaded; the unfinished castle was seized by the very king whose status it had been designed to challenge. Henry VIII took possession of the site he coveted, and in 1535 he and his second wife Anne Boleyn visited Thornbury for ten days, forced to extend their stay by an outbreak of plague in nearby Bristol. The bedchamber in which they slept survives as the present-day Henry VIII Suite.
After Henry's death the castle passed to his son Edward VI and then to his daughter Mary I, who returned it to the Stafford family in 1554. Ownership subsequently moved to the Howards and stayed with that family for more than three centuries until 1960, when Sir Algar Howard sold the castle. In 1966 the celebrated chef Kenneth Bell bought it for £26,000 and established it as a high-class restaurant and small hotel. After passing through several hoteliers, the castle was acquired by its current owners in 2019, who have overseen a multi-million-pound refurbishment programme.
The historic fabric of the castle is exceptional. The unfinished gateway still bears grooves for a portcullis and was intended to defend the barracks, which were planned to house between two and three hundred soldiers and servants. The oriel windows in the Privy Garden, taller and more elaborate on the Duke's first-floor chambers than on his wife's ground-floor rooms, are considered among the finest examples of domestic Tudor architecture in England. The 1514 red-brick chimney in the courtyard predates those at Hampton Court and is one of the oldest Tudor chimneys in the country. Even the Tudor Hall's timbered gallery was a fashion statement of the moment, allowing the Duke to entertain guests and admire his knot garden while listening to divine services through a private doorway to St Mary's Church.
Bedchambers and Suites
Across the castle's Tudor and Victorian additions there are 26 individual bedchambers, each styled with its own character and named after historical figures connected to the site. Every room is equipped with cotton linen, a flatscreen television, a safe, a minibar, coffee and tea facilities (Nespresso in the suites) and a complimentary decanter of Thornbury Castle Sloe Gin.
Deluxe Bedchamber

Superior Deluxe Bedchamber

Castle Suites

Henry VII Suite
A 49-square-metre family suite in the North Wing overlooking the inner courtyard, with a four-poster bedroom, a fold-down Murphy bed in the panelled lounge and an additional children's bed available on request. Sleeps up to two adults and two children. A virtual tour is available.
Jane Seymour Suite
A 65-square-metre suite in the main tower, reached by spiral staircase, with a four-poster bed and views across to Wales. A virtual tour is available.
Henry VIII Suite
The 65-square-metre room in which Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn actually slept in 1535. Today it offers a four-poster bed, an open fireplace and a stone-clad en-suite bathroom accessed by the original spiral staircase. Catherine of Aragon Tower Suite
The hotel's flagship: 71 square metres at the top of the South Wing tower, reached after climbing 77 spiral steps, with 24-carat gilding, silk wall hangings and, at its heart, the largest four-poster bed of any UK hotel. Children and Dogs
Children aged 12 and under stay for £35 per night including breakfast when sharing a parent's room; those aged 13 to 17 stay for £75 per night including breakfast. Dogs are welcomed at £25 per dog, per night, subject to availability and advance booking; not all rooms are suitable for pets. Extra beds for adults are £75 on a bed-and-breakfast basis or £150 including dinner.
Fine Dining at the Castle
The castle's dining rooms have been awarded 3AA Rosettes and 4 Red Stars for service quality. Culinary Director David Williams, who joined in 2024, trained under Joel Robuchon at three-Michelin-star level in Paris, was awarded 3AA Rosettes by the age of 26 and ran a Michelin-starred London kitchen by 28. His stated ambition is to reflect the quality of the castle's surroundings in every plate that leaves the kitchen, working in close partnership with Head Gardener Jeff to plan the year's crop.
Six-Course Tasting Menu
Priced at £95 per person and served all week (last orders 8.30pm), the Six-Course Tasting Menu is described by the kitchen as 'an extravagant experience which we recommend everyone must try once'. A wine-pairing option raises the experience further; the earlier rosette-announcement press release indicates that tasting menus with pairings begin at £92. Sample dishes have included Creedy Carver duck with rhubarb, hibiscus and ginger, Cornish cod with fennel and bouillabaisse, and a Manuka honey parfait with lemon and meringue.
Three-Course Dinner Menu
A seasonal à la carte offering, with many of the ingredients and herbs grown in the on-site kitchen garden and picked that morning. Prices for à la carte begin at around £78. Recent dishes have featured Bath Ale-braised onion with Old Winchester cheese, Westend Farm pork with cauliflower and mustard, and a rhubarb, milk mousse and sourdough dessert. Dinner service runs from 6.30pm to 8.30pm. A discretionary 12.5% service charge is added to bills.
Afternoon Tea
Served daily in the lounges between 1pm and 4pm, afternoon tea is priced at £45 per person and includes a selection of finger sandwiches, savouries, scones and patisserie. The Festive Afternoon Tea returns from 24 November each year, served beside the log fires with traditional decorations. The concept of afternoon tea is generally credited to the Duchess of Bedford in the 1830s; Thornbury Castle considers itself a fitting place to revive that royal custom. All Day Dining
For those wanting something more informal, the All Day Dining Menu is served in the lounges, library and outdoor areas. A separate children's menu is available, and room service can be arranged.
Wine List

Private Dining
The Baron's Sitting Room and the Chancellors Lounge on the first floor, overlooking the fountain and front gardens, can host intimate dinners and drinks receptions for up to 20 guests. The Tudor Hall, with its stone walls, hand-painted ceiling and stone cave bar, takes up to 70 guests and is used for banquets, gala dinners and wedding breakfasts.
Gardens, Kitchen Garden and Sustainability
The castle's 15 acres of grounds are split between several historic gardens. The Privy Garden sits adjacent to the lounge and library and includes a small shrub maze and a magnificent magnolia tree that buds in March. The Goodly Garden was historically a place of ladies' gossip and scent, and still contains the original bee boles that once sheltered straw skeps. The Rose Garden holds around 200 stems chosen for their historical connotations and provides a spectacularly scented summer stroll. The Courtyard Garden greets arrivals at the main gateway and is centred on a fountain that is particularly atmospheric when lit at night.
The Kitchen Garden is the working heart of the estate. Head Gardener Jeff, gardener Will and a team of volunteers use a no-dig method to grow a selection of fruit, vegetables and herbs, much of which is picked that morning and served the same evening. All food waste and coffee grounds from the kitchens are composted and returned to the beds. The castle adheres to Relais & Châteaux's twelve Commitments to Sustainability and operates the wider estate on regenerative principles. Twelve traditional bee skeps, a type of straw beehive used in the Tudor period, sit within the original bee boles, and a new planting scheme is designed around pollinator-friendly UV spectra.
Activities at the Castle
The activities programme at Thornbury Castle is unusually rich for a UK hotel and very much in keeping with the site's Tudor heritage. All activities are run subject to availability and weather and must be pre-booked through reception on 01454 281182.
Longbow Archery
Run by Battle Archery Bristol on weekends, this session begins with fundamentals from an Archery GB-qualified instructor, then invites guests to test themselves against period pastimes. Maximum six persons per session; must be booked 48 hours in advance; full amount payable if cancelled within 24 hours.
Axe Throwing
Also run by Battle Archery Bristol on weekends. Guests throw hatchets and angels at a target under qualified marshal supervision, with the option of a competitive throw-off. Maximum six persons per session; same booking and cancellation terms as archery.
Guided History Tours
A local historian leads a tour of both the interior and the grounds, weaving in the detailed history of the castle and its former owners. Pre-booking at reception is essential. Tickets cost £20 per person, payable in cash on the day.
Falconry
Displays with birds of prey, accompanied by entertaining and educational commentary. Displays are pre-booked in advance and prices start at £420 for 90 minutes. The tradition of hunting with falcons and hawks is believed to date back at least 2,000 years, originating in the Far East before spreading to Europe as a pastime of royalty and aristocracy.
Horse-Drawn Carriage Ride
A 30-minute ride from the castle into the local town and back. Options include an oak-panelled Victorian carriage (2 adults and 2 children), a white Victorian carriage (2 adults and 2 children) or an open carriage (up to 6 adults). Tudor Costume Hire
Replica Tudor outfits can be hired for the day to wander the gardens, take afternoon tea or relax in the lounges. Adult costumes are £40 and children's costumes are £20; book at reception.
Garden Tour with Afternoon Tea
Seasonal garden tours led by the head gardener, with points of interest such as the bee skeps in the Goodly Garden, followed by full afternoon tea and a complimentary goody bag. Tickets can be booked online.

Sunset Sunday Acoustic Sessions

Tudor Murder Mystery Dinner
Past-Times Living History performers stage a Tudor murder mystery set in the world of Henry VIII. Guests are invited to help solve the suspicious death of Henry Fitzroy, the King's illegitimate son and 'the boy who could have been King'. Tudor Royalty Experience
An immersive afternoon dressing in replica Tudor gowns and outfits, taking a short history walk with Lady Samantha, and finishing with full Thornbury Castle afternoon tea and a glass of Champagne. £375 per person based on a minimum of two guests. Thornbury Castle markets itself as a 'fairytale wedding venue'. The proposals package begins at £682 and includes a private area within the grounds, a bottle of Champagne, a three-course dinner in the 3AA Rosette restaurant and an overnight stay with breakfast.

For larger celebrations the castle can be hired on an exclusive basis. Spaces include the Tudor Hall (up to 70 guests with its own stone cave bar and small lounge), the Barons Sitting Room and Chancellors Lounge (up to 20 for drinks receptions and dinner), the lounges and library, the Tower and Oriel dining rooms, the 26 bedchambers and 15 acres of grounds.
Meetings and Filming
For corporate clients, the castle has two distinctive meeting rooms: the intimate Baron's Sitting Room with the Chancellor's Lounge, and the grand Tudor Hall accommodating up to 70 guests. Thornbury Castle is strongly associated with Christmas and New Year. The 2026 Festive Brochure details the three-night Christmas break and the two-night New Year celebration. Festive Afternoon Tea returns from 24 November each year, and the castle also hosts Festive Dining events for parties of 10 to 70 in the Baron's Sitting Room and Tudor Hall.
Professional fireworks are handled by Chase Lane Fireworks; the castle's fireworks policy sets out the safety and clean-up procedures used.

The castle's parent company is the Khamas Group, a major UAE conglomerate. The hotel's Corporate Social Responsibility policy is reviewed annually by a board-level steering committee. Practical measures include a no-dig kitchen garden, on-site composting of food waste and coffee grounds, chemical-free growing where possible, plant stock raised from seed or cuttings on site, pollinator-friendly planting, the use of bee skeps in the original Tudor bee boles, paper and cardboard compaction, glass and cooking-oil recycling, a plastic-free bar (including no plastic straws) and adherence to Relais & Châteaux's twelve sustainability commitments.
