Woodchester Valley Vineyard: A Single-Estate Cotswold Winery & Family Story

A Family-Run Cotswold Vineyard Reimagining English Wine

Tucked into the rolling limestone valleys of the South Cotswolds, between Stroud and Nailsworth, Woodchester Valley Vineyard is a 58-acre, single-estate vineyard and winery that has helped redefine what English wine can be. Founded in 2007 by Fiona Shiner on the strength of a single experimental acre of vines at Amberley, it has grown into one of the most respected boutique producers in the West Country, with a portfolio of multi-award-winning still and sparkling wines, a thriving cellar door, vineyard tours, on-site accommodation and a passionate team led by winemaker Jeremy Mount.

As a single-estate producer, every grape that becomes a Woodchester Valley wine is grown on the family's own land and made in its own winery, on the same site, surrounded by the same Cotswold brash and fossil-rich Jurassic limestone that gives the wines their distinctive mineral character. Sitting in the spacious tasting room, looking out over the valley, visitors often remark that it could just as easily be the Loire.

The Story: How a Single Acre Became 58

Woodchester Valley was established in 2007, when Fiona Shiner - then recently returned to Britain after 18 years living in Hong Kong - planted a single acre of vines at Amberley, taking inspiration from a comment by her mother-in-law that the Romans could have grown vines on the property. The first acre was followed by further plantings in 2011 at Amberley, 20 acres at the Woodchester site in 2012 and another 20 acres at Doverow Hill, Stonehouse, in 2013. In 2016 a former farm building was converted into a winery, and Jeremy Mount joined as winemaker; the 2016 vintage was the first year Woodchester Valley produced its wines entirely on site.

Today the estate produces more than 100,000 bottles of still and sparkling wine each year from three distinct vineyard sites, all within the South Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The team, which includes consultant Master of Wine Susan McCraith, draws on a deep bench of viticultural and hospitality expertise, but the project's heart remains Fiona's original pioneering spirit: planting vines in a corner of England where, in the early 2000s, almost no one else was doing it.

Single Estate - What That Means

Woodchester Valley is one of only a handful of English vineyards that produce wine entirely from its own grapes, in its own on-site winery. It buys in no fruit and sells no fruit, and has done so since 2016. That vertical integration allows the team to control every step from pruning to bottling, and it underwrites the quality of wines that have caught the attention of critics including Jancis Robinson and picked up awards at WineGB West and across the international English wine circuit.

The Three Vineyards: Limestone, Clay and Fossils

The estate's vineyards lie across three sites, each with its own soil profile, but all rooted in the same Jurassic geology that makes the Cotswolds so distinctive for cool-climate viticulture.

  • Amberley - shallow, free-draining soils over Oolitic limestone, with a high stone content. Particularly well suited to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
  • Woodchester - also classic Cotswold brash over limestone, planted with Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Ortega.
  • Doverow Hill, Stonehouse - higher clay content and deeper soils, ideal for the aromatic white variety Bacchus.

All three sites are planted on slopes (more than gentle, less than sheer) facing south, east and south-west, maximising exposure to the low English sun. Walking the rows you can find scallop-shaped shells, fossilised trigonia and ammonites embedded in the bedrock - the same marine fossils that gave the celebrated Orpheus Bacchus its name.

Grape varieties grown across the estate include Bacchus, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Regent, Seyval Blanc, Siegerrebe, Solaris, Sauvignon Blanc and Ortega. Winemaking is deliberately low-intervention: a four-tonne press operates under nitrogen to protect aromatics, ferments are run cool in stainless steel, and the sparkling wines are made by the traditional method with a minimum of two years on the lees.

The Wines: Still, Sparkling, Rosé and Red

Woodchester Valley's portfolio covers the full spectrum of English wine, from bone-dry aromatic whites to elegant traditional-method sparkling, a small but characterful red and a still rosé. Every wine is vegan-friendly.

White Wines

  • Culver Hill 2023 (£17.00) - The estate blend, with Bacchus, Ortega, Pinot Blanc, Solaris and Siegerrebe. Cantaloupe melon, citrus and a saline, mineral finish.
  • Bacchus 2023 (£18.25) - The estate's bestselling wine. Elderflower, cut grass, lime leaf and passionfruit; rated 16.5/20 by Jancis Robinson and widely regarded as one of the brightest, cleanest Bacchus wines in England.
  • Tenterhook 2024 (£20.00) - A 50/50 blend of barrel-fermented Ortega and Siegerrebe, named Best Blended White Wine by WineGB West and awarded 93 points. Apricot, grapefruit and orange blossom.
  • Orpheus Bacchus 2023 (£26.00) - A limited-edition reserve expression made from the oldest Bacchus parcels at Amberley and Stonehouse. Refined, structured and saline - again rated 16.5/20 by Jancis Robinson.
  • Sauvignon Blanc 2025 (£28.00) - A new release from the estate, opulent and distinctive.

Sparkling Wines

All Woodchester Valley sparkling wines are made in the traditional method and aged on the lees for at least two years. The range includes:

  • Cotswold Classic 2023 (£29.50) - A delicate, flavourful, inviting blend, the everyday celebratory sparkler.
  • Reserve Cuvée 2021 (£37.00) - The estate's prestige non-vintage-style blend: elegant, flavourful, traditional.
  • Rosé Brut 2022 (£40.00) - A delicate, crisp and delightful pink sparkler, recently released as the team's February wine of the month.
  • Blanc de Blancs 2019 (£48.00) - A 100% Chardonnay traditional-method sparkler, decadent, zesty and elegant.
  • Trigonia Blanc de Blanc (£70.00) - A limited-edition Chardonnay from a single plot, named for the fossilised trigonia shells found in the vineyard soils.

Magnums

For special occasions, three magnums are produced in limited quantities: Magnum Cotswold Classic (£65.00), Magnum Reserve Cuvée (£75.00) and Magnum Rosé Brut (£85.00). The larger format is, the team argues, the best possible way to enjoy sparkling wine - the slower, more stable fermentation produces a finer, more integrated mousse.

Rosé

  • Pinot Rosé 2025 (£22.00) - A dry, ripe and balanced still rosé from Pinot Noir.

Red Wine

  • Pinot Précoce 2023 (£28.00) - The estate's ethereal, sultry and smooth red from Pinot Précoce (Pinot Noir's earlier-ripening cousin).

Non-Alcoholic

  • Verjuice (£14.95) - A traditional, alcohol-free alternative to wine, pressed from unripe grapes. Ideal for cooking, mocktails and Dry January.

Wine Collections & Gift Sets

Alongside individual bottles, Woodchester Valley curates a small but well-judged range of gift collections and themed trios for weddings, anniversaries, housewarmings and corporate gifting:

  • Taste of the Cotswolds (£75.00, was £77.25) - A Bacchus, Pinot Rosé and Cotswold Classic trio in a presentation box.
  • Cotswold Sparkling Collection (£110.00, was £114.00) - Cotswold Classic, Rosé Brut and Reserve Cuvée.
  • Sauvignon-esque Trio (£70.00, was £72.25) - The team's aromatic Sauvignon-style whites.
  • Woodchester Essentials (£106.00, was £112.50) - A refreshing, versatile mixed case.
  • Medal Winning Trio (£102.00) - Three award-winning wines.

  • Signature Woodchester (£161.00, was £170.50) - The flagship collection.
  • Luxury Collection (£177.00) - The estate's most refined, expressive selection.

Customers can also build their own bespoke gift set, choosing a Single Wine Gift Set (£3.50), Duo or Trio Gift Set (£7.50 for the box) or Wine & Riedel Glasses Gift Set (£47.50), each of which can be paired with a bottle from the full range, personalised with a gift message, and upgraded with a Tour & Tasting voucher for two. Other notable gift sets include the Bacchus Gift Set (£109.00, was £125.75) and the Reserve Cuvée Gift Set (£145.00, was £164.50).

William of Malmesbury, writing in the 12th century, observed that Gloucestershire was 'planted thicker with vineyards than any other in England', and the Domesday Book of 1086 records two vineyards in Stonehouse (then Stanhus) - the very parish where the Doverow Hill vineyard now stands.
